The SRD has a bit of info on this.

Organization: Solitary, gang (2–5), band (6–9 plus 35% noncombatants), hunting/raiding party (6–9 plus 2–4 dire wolves), or tribe (21–30 plus 35% noncombatants plus 12–30 dire wolves, 2–4 ogres, and 12–22 orcs)

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Nothing listed.  I think huge dire bears might work.

a little too powerful a combo for me. i figured if hannibal could cross the alps with elepahnts why not hill ginats on hills. the elephants would be a little larger than normal ones with modified feet for climbing

Hmmm... you could think outside the box a little and throw the players a curve...

Advanced Griffons (11+ HD) get Huge. Wyverns get Huge in a hurry when you advance them. Or a Dragonne or Manticore for something truly exotic.

A Hill Giant Barbarian Leader riding a Huge Wyvern with Mounted Attack. Nasty.

And of course, there's always dragons...

Ugh! That would be an ugly encounter....for the PCs. One they would remember, though.

BTW, what is the level of the PCs for this encunter? If you are still looking to design this encounter it might help in refining the suggestions.

EIGHTH? Yow! You might wanna pass on mounts then. I mean, just 2 Hill Giants are a CR8 encounter, yes? Toss in some ogre and troll minions plus a Dire Wolf or two, and things can get out of hand. Then again, a Huge Griffon is about CR 6-ish. But a Dire Bear big enough to carry a Hill Giant is at least 17 HD!

I had no idea your PCs were such delicate flowers...

Long gone are the days when some 8th level players could take on a whole mess o' hill giants. MINIMUM of 12 points of damage per swing before power attack will whittle down an 8th level fighter's hp quick, and croak a wizard in a round or two. Use them with caution.

Well, if the Huge Griffons are 6th (I haven't checked) two mounted hill giants would be a CR 10 encounter, maybe 11 if you want to factor the flight of the hill giants That's a pretty good encounter, albeit a tough one. As long as it is not combined with other creatures of equivalent CR or the PCs are weak by the time they get to it, they should be okay.

Griffons are not for me. the problem with a lot of monsters is their low attack bonu's they look scary and have lots of hp but they cant hit the side of a barn. i cant see the pcs attacking the entire camp directly but if they do then game over. going with several hill giants, chieftain and a sorcerer type plus some dire wolves

/agree

Every time I pull a monster out of the MM for my high level campaign (even the epic demons and devils) I have to augment their attack bonuses or there will be a lot of whooshing sounds as they completely miss my fighters with 35+ AC

That is a problem with high level campaigns.

Having said that, last afternoon in our weekly campaing we got hit by a golem that was easily hitting ACs in the 50s and I don't think he was overly advanced. If it had class levels, too, it would have been insane.

Yeah, or you could do like my DM and just lie through your teeth regardless of the rolls. For 3 months now, he's been rolling 19's about 1/3 of the time. We're going to make him start doing combat rolls in the open.

That is very suspicious. Of course, by probability you can roll a 19 every time, assuming the dice aren't loaded, since past rolls have no impact on future rolls. Now, I'd still want to see those rolls, though.

You and me both.

I guess that's what I get for playing the tank, but rocking out my AC. Literally, last week, 21 attacks against me needed a 19.

7 hit.

Crazy.

Any way, I would not use mounts based on the party's ECL. Maybe a few pets, or something else if they need some extra challenge, but Mounts (short of a cybernetic Ninja T-rex) probably add too much power and not enough "wow"

I think it depends on the encounter. A strange mount can sometimes be realy spectacular. Remember the funkiness of the Windrider Pclass, where by taking it you could have goblins riding ogre mounts? I'm glad they didn't update that pclass but you can still have wonderful encounters. But that is just me.

But there is always that 20. This is why I like incorporating some of the Heroes of Battle rules for mass archery, because you sometimes shouldn't be able to avoid all of those hail of arrows.

But if you don't want to use them, it's time to fight smarter, not harder: nets, tanglefoot bags, alchemist fire, grapples, trips, poisons, etc.

BTW, have you run this encounter yet?

Unless there's a shaman, druid or ranger in the camp, I'd think that any pets that the hill giants have would be skittish at best, and unreliable. I mean, look at this from the point of view of the pet. Why hang around these guys when it's as likely to get you killed as not? I'd think that hill giants are liable to sort of randomly decide to whack a dire wolf just for the amusement factor.

Now, if there's an organizer, and the pets are seen as useful guardians, then they may be taken care of properly, and we have a whole new issue. After all, this implies that some hill giants are the bosses of other hill giants, and I'd think hill giants don't like to be bossed around much. And, that could make for an interesting way for and out-gunned group of PCs to take on the camp--turn some giants against the rest. And who said Charisma was a dump stat?!

I would use Advanced Dire Boars or Bears as mounts. Seems some bestial, wild mounts go well with Hill Giants. You could also add some flavour with lycanthropy in (there's a wereboar hill giant described in MM). Other creatures that seem to fit in are ogres as a less powerful force allies (or rivals if it fits you more). A cult of Malar (FR deity of beasts might also work with the barbaric culture of Hill Giants). Other giants may be part of the campaign like Stone, Frost, Fire Giants which could even serve a greater power.
Please, let us know how you develope it.

I didn't read the whole thread but Mastodons are good although the book might not include them along with the giant. you could use something like that for the commanders mount. bear in mind the encounter level. Hill giants with class levels are hard enough.

Hill giants are to giants what Neanderthals are to us. So keep in mind .

its been on hold which stinks. one of the major players had a business trip which hrew the group for a loop. i had gone without mounts scrapping idea of mounts but have been relooking at spawn. maybe 1 for chieftain who is a wizard type. Hopefully this week they get a chance against a hill giant ambush party so if that goes well then soon the camp
