| Hey everybody!
Well, my wizard just got access to polymorph. I'm still drinking
in all the errata and "clarifications" on the Wizards site. I
just have a simple question or two for now. Scenario:
My wizard polymorphs into a hill giant. She's 7th level, and a hill giant has 12 HD normally. Is that kosher?
She normally has 30 hp. In giant form, the increased CON gives
her 28 extra hp, for a total of 58. In the battle, she takes 48
hp. When the spell wears off, does she have 10 hp left, or is she
at -18? This is, needless to say, quite important.
Info please. I don't plan on using the spell extensively, because
it can be a real headache. But the wizard is CG/CN, and she likes
to mix it up a little.
Thanks!
JIM

| Let's assume you are going by the PHB and nothing else:
1) You can't do this change. You are limited to a creature who has no more hit dice than your level. So until you hit 12th, you can't become a hill giant. There are other really good monsters (check out ones with good dex and natural armor, as well as con) that you can turn into.
2) The hit points you get from an increased con are not temporary hit points like you would get from false life. So when your con goes down, you go instantly to dead in this example. Have you ever heard of the Barbarian Red Zone? It is the same thing that happens to them when they rage and take too much damage.
However if you are looking at the new polymorph errata consider this: your con goes up, but not your hit points. According to that, hit points are static. This makes some things smoother, but others messier like what happens if you take con damage? Both versions of the spell can be annoying. I'd suggest finding one or two creatures you like and primarily sticking to them. Also talk to you DM, it's going to be as annoying to him/her as it is to you.
Hope this helps. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| So they went BACK to not increasing your hit points when CON goes up? The 2004 erratum I read said they do go up.
Ugh. Complicated.

| | The re-errata'd it recently. Basically they made all of these shape changing spells a "polymorph subschool". The primary problem is that at higher level a wizard with it, or more importantly shapechange, a real game breaker. Sometimes I get the feeling they'd remove the spell entirely if it wasn't such a staple like magic missle. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| I realize this is long, but you may find it useful.

| | You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com | |

| I always end up imaginging these things from the point of view of the characters.
"Hey Marla, change into a hill giant and run over there and tell us what you see." "Sorry Kang, can't do that anymore, the rules on polymorph changed." "Again? Man, you wizards really have it tough." "Could be worse, at least my number of attacks in a minute haven't changed much in 15 years." "Too true."
