Quick question:

Does 'skirmish' work if you move two squares back and then return to the space which you stood on at the beggining of the round? I don't own this book, only my player does, so I can't check it.

You can check out the Skirmish ability of the scout at http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Classes-Base.pdf page 161.
Notice that the Skirmish ability was specifically errated (check the wizards.com site), and one must move 10' away from where one was at the start of one's turn. Therefore returning to the same point no longer holds.

Most of the classes that depend on movement, like the dervish as well as the scout, don't allow you to move back and forth to count as movement.

The dervish Pclass would allow the character to do the movement you suggested. You could make a circle, but you can't enter a square you just left.
