Hi,

I'm starting a new campaign and our friend Tom wants a half catfolk, half red dragon, which we're all okay with. In order to balance things we thought that he should "build up" to having the full abilities of his race.

The thing is we're unclear on how some of this will work out.

I've only included the stuff we're worried about in the following description.

The catfolk from Races of Wild get +4 dex, +2 Cha, for +1 level adjustment.

1/2 dragon template: increases hit die to d12, base skill points are 6 + int modifier, Str +8, Con +2, Int +2, Cha +2, all for level +3.

At the end of this the player wants to be a monk.

This is the current plan, but I'm open to suggestions:

He's looking at a total of +4 to his level because of the races.

His first level will be monk, and then over the next four levels the racial modifiers will come into play.

Questions we have:

How many hit points does he get at each level for the first five levels?

Do his saves increase for the first five levels?

How many skill points does he get per level.

Is there an easier way to keep him balanced with the rest of the party, like a 1/2 dragon class he can take similar to the way undead can progress in Libris Mortis?

Any help is appreciated.

I know its weird.  Sorry.

Draconic Racial Class (Races of the Dragon 71)

1st-level: Normal class (in Tom's case, Monk). Additional bonus: +2 on Intimidate checks and Spot checks.
2nd-level: No class-level gained. ECL 2. Addiional bonus: +2 Str, +2 Con, +2 Cha. 2 claw attacks d3 damage. Darkvision 60ft. Dragonblood subtype. Low-light vision. Natural Armor (+1). +4 racial on saves vs. sleep/paralysis.
3rd-level: No class-level gained. ECL 3. Additional bonus: +2 Str, +2 Int. Bite attack (1d6). Breath weapon (weak: deals 1/2 amount listed in MM). Immunity to energy (in Tom's case Fire). Natural armor improves (+2 total).
4th-level: No class-level gained. ECL 4. Additional bonus: +4 Str. Breath weapon (full: deals full damage listed in MM). Dragon type (replaces dragonblood subtype). Natural armor improves (+4 total).

To incorporate the catfolk into all that, I'd add:

3rd-level: Additional Bonus: +2 Dex
5th-level: No class-level gained. ECL 5. Additional bonus: +2 Dex, +2 Cha.

This assumes that catfolk (which I'm not terribly familiar with) don't gain any other advantages of note (that wouldn't be overriden by the 1/2 dragon template).

Which leads to:

6th-level: Level 2 Half-catfolk/half-red dragon monk. ECL 6.

Using this method results in the following drawbacks: No HD/save/skill point increase at levels 2, 3, 4, or 5. One advantage is that you aren't required to take all of your racial ECL in order. So, your player could be progress as follows:

ECL One: Monk 1
ECL Two: Draconic Racial ECL+1
ECL Three: Monk 2
ECLl Four: Draconic Racial ECL+2
ECL Five: Monk 3
ECL Six: Draconic Racial ECL+3
ECL Seven: Monk 4
ECL Eight: Draconic Racial ECL +4

This would allow the player to avoid falling too far behind the rest of the party in terms of hit points, hit dice, base attack bonus, base saves, and skill points while still balancing out the massive ECL. After eighth level the ECL is paid for and the character would advance normally.

Anywho, this is just a suggestion. I'm sure there are other ways to handle this.

By the by, could you post full stats for Catfolk? I don't have Races of the Wild.

I would highly recommend the way zenthrus has laid it out, with the mix of class levels and racial levels. Otherwise, you'll have a 5th level character with 1st level hit points (not to mention other abilities, feats, and saving throws of a 1st level character). At that level, characters can get easily fireballed. So say they are facing a 7th level wizard, not a very hard encounter, but if it gets a fireball off that's an average of 24 points of damage, 12 if he saves (not likely if he takes a fighter or cleric class). He goes from healthy to almost dead or at best a few hit points left. Not a good situation to be in and that is not necessarily the toughest they could face.

A +4 adjustment is a big one. You get a lot from half-dragon, but I would still warn your player that he might have a lot of trouble with level based effects (like Dictum, Forbiddance, etc).

And imagine how ugly this guy will be.

Will he have patches of fur growing out from under scales? Or will he look like a reptile with fur? Or will he look like a catman with scales?

What mean spirited parent let this abomination live after being born? It had to be the Red Dragon parent

You should talk another player into playing a best freind character for Tom. I'm sure his character will need the companionship.  He could be half Gelatinous Cube & half Beholder. Of course he'd be kinda oval shaped, but he could call himself Oblong.

Savage species has some great ideas on this as well, but Zenthrus pretty much hit the nail on the head.
