| From time to time, there's a situation when you are not playing at your home, and still, you're the one that has the best (if not only) supply of miniatures. Especially without your own car, you can't bring your whole collection, and you might have to run in other places too during your way to the gaming place. For this kind of situations, there should be a basic collection of RPG -usable miniatures, that can be packed in a small box and should help through most situations.
What would you add into the box? Of course, situation changes with levels, so maybe these collections should be thought by level -basis.
What I've been having (I GM an Iron Heroes campaign with human majority, so this will have to fit to that too)
-Large bunch of rogue-like characters -large bunch of human soldiers (city guards etc) -several heroic character types -cultists & other spellcasters -mounted figs (mine are mostly LOTR -figs) -few basic animals (mainly wolves) -figs suitable for commoners (commoners, strahd zombies etc.)
What else there should be? All these in addition to those above might be too much: -basic undead (skeletons/zombies) -orcs -goblins -ogres -trolls
In addition, I've asked GM's to give me a short list of special monsters/figs, that include some that have nothing to do with the adventure; This way I don't know what we're actually going to encounter.
What would/does your basic box contain?

| | I bring PC minis, and usually a half dozen obolds or goblins, and some large based critters I have about. Then throw in 10 or so medium humanoid-ish creatures, and I'm good. | | Official Delegate, Wizards of the Coast Against The Giants Called Shot: Huge Green Dragon Icons Called Shot: Gargantuan Prismatic Dragon

| | My "basic box" is unfortunately one of every mini I have, so not applicable to the discussion. If I had one I'd add some demons and devils to your list. | I'd definitely add a few outsiders and elementals (summonable) and perhaps buff up the animal/magical beast list (also summonables).
Fortunately, we game at my place so my minis are all readily available | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References | |

| My groups are usually playing at my place. Yet, still I try to get the minis I need in advance (searching through all the minis can take lots of time since I'm not as organized as others). When we do play away, I take the PC minis, and a few minis of each type and size. Several smalls, several mediums and several larges (I don't bring biggers unless I specifically know in advance). Some undeads, some aberrations, some humanoids. It's still better then dice or chips or various ad-hoc solutions.

I would say that such a grouping would likely be campaign specific. It all depends on what the DM has in mind.

| | But you can say that about almost any non-human creature. The good thing about outsiders is that they can sub for a lot of other creatures: stuff with wings, mutants, etc. This box sounds like the equivalent of the generic first aid kit. You may not need everything, but they are good to have around. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | I was just saying that whatever one D&D group uses as a generic assortment of useful stuff may not be useful in another group. There are plenty of groups out there where a bunch of demons/devils would be a perfectly reasonable selection. I was just saying that with my groups, it would have to be different, since we get virtually zero use out of the demons/devils. | | "Look to God and live." | SO I realized I didn't answer your question well, since I thought you wanted additions to the list above, not straight out suggestions.
I would say ogres over trolls, as the former can sub for the latter and any other large humanoid like giants. Goblins make good kobolds as well, or any small creatures I'd say if limited, have just a couple of various zombies. They look different enough that they can sub for undead in genreal If you can reduce the amount of human rogues and militia (which is hard in IH) you could add in order of what I think is useful:
1) draconic humanoids (which sub for lizardmen or the host or reptile creatures) 2) outsiders (sooner or later in most cases you fight these, but as Corim stated, not everyone does.Plkus they are wierd enough to come in very handy for other types) 3) Any other common encounter for your group.
Hope that is better than what I had before. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | Dragons are not typically a spur-of-the-moment encounter. Unless they're specifically called for I'd put more emphasis on summonables (animals, magical beasts, outsiders, elementals, fey) than on dragons. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | | True, but they can sub for a variety of long, winged creatures as well (wyvern, griffons, chimera, etc). Most of what I suggested can be subbed for a lot of other creatures, although I didn't communicate that last as well. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | An ogre can sub for them, if needed. I find a plano boxes or others that you can find in a fishing store can fit into a backpack if you are not carrying a lot of books and have a lot of space, but this won't get larges. You may need a separate bag for them if you decide on more than one of them. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| Behir and Bulette are good choices for generic Huge minis. Cloud Giant and Treant are good choice for generic "tall" Huge minis.
Looks like a well-thought-out generic miniatures set. Not too unwieldy to travel with, but including a good mix of sizes and types. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. | I have a relatively large fishing-box including several smaller a and few larger compartments. I keep a number of animals, mounted minis and elementals for general use, together with a hill giant, some ogres and a few trolls, in my large compartments. In the two largest of my smaller ones i have orcs/goblins/hobgoblins, and also many fighter/cleric/rogue/monk/wizards minis. Finally, all my small top compartments are occupied by those minis that have been selected to represent specific PCs or NPCs in-game. I always only use this box to carry my minis, all my other minis are stored away. When i design some encounters, i immediately add the mini(s) to the box, and sometimes remove those that are moot.

| | It's funny. I'm able to store my minis at my friends house while we run his game there. It's gotten to the point where there are so many minis that even if there is an exact figure in the set, finding it can take a lot of time, especially since this is a very open ended game and hard to plan for. It ends up as if we had a small figs to draw from because we use proxies anyways. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow
