Anybody have this? I was wondering if it was worth buying, or if it was more full of stuff we already have in other books with stupid templates or class level tacked on.

Here is someones first impressions on EN World.

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=201664

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Thanks for the linkage. Looks good so far, perhaps I'll pick one up after all.

I got my first look at the MMV today. In terms of original material it was much better than the MMIV. Now, I didn't mind that installment as much as some because I appreciated what they were trying to do, and to me that was fine. But it was nice to see a lot more new monsters and ones that weren't so crazy that I never wanted to use them.

Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

I liked it overall. Most of the monsters gave me a "cool, but WTF?" impression. A lot of good, yet strange monsters.

That said, I really like the Mindflayers of Thoon section. It was worth it to me, just for that. The new templates were pretty interesting too.

Mindflayers of Thoon? Aren't those the creatures created from the Design and Development poll going on at wizards.com a while back?

Yeah.  It's hard not to get that when you have to come up with original material and not rehash the classics.

My problem with the MMV is that I don't like mindflayers (and by extension the mindflayers of thoon), demons, or devils. With those and the high number of odd monsters, I am having a hard time having enough interest in this book to buy it. This is unfortunate, since I had been planning since the book was announced to buy it.

Another group of creatures in the MMV that seems fairly useless to me is the large percentage of huge or bigger creatures--ones that are too big to appear in regular DDM sets. I think this was very shortsighted.

Sorry you feel that way.  I tend to take the opposite view.  Not everything should be made with DDM in mind and there has been a derth of new huge or larger creatures recently.  For me, proxies are not a big thing.

I always find it interesting what sells books to people.  For me the three things you mention are the strongest incentives for me to purchase the MMV (which i did last week).   Different strokes for different folks I guess but I am curious why Demons and Devils don't appeal to you.  Extraplanar stuff (especially demons) have always been a staple in D&D almost as much as Undead.

Yeah, it's rare to hear about someone not liking demons or devils. Say... you wouldn't be interested in trading minis, would you?

I wonder if someone out there doesn't like dragons.

In my D&D experience, demons and devils only appear very rarely--and that's when a prepublished adventure calls for them. There are plenty of other evil creature types that they aren't necessary. The Orcus Icon is the first miniature that isn't a promo that I won't be acquiring due to zero interest.

I like Evil outsiders, but I agree with Corim about their scarcity. I find my group and I travel the planes a lot more, though, so they have a slightly higher use in my games. And even then, not that often.

That's why I love Planescape. It's an excuse to play D&D however I want

I can use as much or as little of any creature in any book. I can also use any sourcebook that comes out and it will make sense in the setting.

There are other discussions on ENWorld as well about this. Such as this one where it's being discussed that MMV and Book of Nine Swords were both influenced by 4e considerations.

MMV looks like they tried to really flesh out the areas of monster types that isn't heavily represented: ie lots of fey, plants, swarms, and "hive mind" types. There's also monsters that change forms/status during a combat or provide interesting battlefield effects. It may be slightly too experimental but some are really cool. It doesn't feel as solid as a few of the other books but definatly better than others. I rank them:

MM1 (no contest, obv)
MM3 (had the most monsters that spawn adventure hooks for me)
MM5 (well laid out, some really cool, some really odd)
Fiend Folio (The classics were good, some new stuff interesting, but find myself rarely using this book)
MM2 (beyond the classics they couldn't fit in MM1, the book is ugly)
MM4 (uggh! If I didn't get this book for free I wouldn't own it)
