Good Ol' Minnesota

Ok...this has been bothering me for a while now. Back in the old days of 2nd E, I was reading the Monstrous Manual and under the gnoll entry they referanced a monster called a "hyenadon" yet I coul not find that monster in the book at all. Later I forgot about it. Now, however, while re-flipping through the Fiendish Codex one, in under the description of Yeenoghu's Realm I find yet again an offhand referance to hyenadons. No other referance throughout that book either.

Does anyone know what these besties are and where (if any) I can find stats for them? What the devil do they even look like?

Hyenadon = Dire Hyena (large-sized).

Archaeologically speaking, hyenadons were 10 feet long and about 4 feet tall hyenas. Unlike Dire Wolves (which are small) hyenadons were actually larger than their modern counterparts.

I ususally use the stats for Dire Wolves, slightly adjusted. Compare regular wolves to hyenas in the Monster Manual. Then tweak the Dire Wolf to make it a Dire Hyena. I am still a little puzzled why they have not yet gotten formal stats, though. At least they don't have Gnolls hanging around with Dire Lions anymore, like they were in 3.0. Yeesh...

Thanks much everyone. That'll help me greatly. I'm planning on running a gnollish Campaign (gnolls at lower levels, Yeenoghu-ish things at higher) and the more variety of beasties the better.

Actually, in the real world the Hyenadon was no relation at all to the Hyena. They get the name because they have incredibly strong jaws (like actual Hyena's). The Hyenadon was the largest land Mamal predator to ever exist, a real nasty bugger.

That being said though, there were creatures you could call Dire Hyena in the prehistoric age, things easily as big as bears that ranged as gfar North as Britain in fact. They were pretty mean too.

Unless we ever hear for certain which beast the writers meant I guess you're free to choose whether this definition meant Dire Hyena or Hyenadon's. Personally, given the biolgical link to Hyena rather than just a linguistic one, I'd go for the Dire Hyena. :)
