| Hey,    In the old Monster Manuals, there were many monster descriptions that detailed that you could harvest certain items from slain monsters to gain some benefit. A nifty sort of "non-monetary" reward. The current monster manuals contain very few if any such references. I need your help to either remind me which ones were previously listed as having nifty harvestable items, or (this would be cool) come up with new ones.
My plan is this: start out with 1st level characters who are tasked with collecting a long list of such items. Think of it as a big adventuring scavenger hunt. They start with the CR low and go to the CR high leveling up as they go.Â
the list so far.
Creature-part                           CR               Effect
Dragon-skin                              1-20            Making of armor (only one I can find mentioned and only really in the DMG at that.)             -teeth                                               Use as dagger or point of hafted weapon/arrow adds one point of energy damage             -bone                                                Craft Ring for energy resistance 5 Â
Black Dragon-stomach             various      bag of holding
Bulette -Carapace                     x                 Non-magical +1 large steel shield
Cockatrice-feather                    3                ?
Delver-Mucus                            9                 Dissolves stone  Â
Digester-Acid                             6                 um, its acid?
Ettercap-spinnerets                  3                 makes web/silk a limited number of times
Gold Dragon-horn                      various        staff of the magi
Howler-quills                              3                 masterwork javelins? causes the -1 penalties if it breaks off in opponent
Manticore-spikes                        5                masterwork suriken?
Roper-tentacles                        12               a reason to be proficient with a whip? single use 2d8 points of Strength damage
Rust Monster-tentacle               x                  rusts things, obviously...                 Â
Troll-skin                                    x                  hide armor made with troll skin gives +1 AC and doesn't break (like in Diablo II!)
Unicorn-many                              3               don't really want to promote killing unicorns, but dang unicorns seem to have alot of good parts: horn, blood, tears...
Xorn-exoskeleton                        x               Energy resistance to shield
So thats a start, give me a monster, a part, and a reason to collect said part. If its not in a core book, list the book it is in. Thanks!

| | Maybe you should add a few more good creatures. It might be interesting what the PCs are willing to do or what they have to do to get said part without killing he creature. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| Back in the days of 1E, as a DM i did an adventure around battling a bastard offspring of Tiamat who was a dragon who's breath weapon was devastating. To battle the dragon, the players had a magic shield made from Xorn scales (are they scales?), since Xorn are immune/resistant to all sorts of stuff (just checked: in 3e, they're immune to cold and fire and they have resistance to energy 10, plus DR 5/bludgeonning. Tough hide still).
The battle the PCs had with the Xorn back then had been really cool. I had set it in caverns, where they knew Xorn to be present (for reasons i can't remember). I had set up a relatively tense ambiance, with the players moving slowly through the echoing cavers, water dripping here and there, etc... until they were surprised by the Xorn. The latter of course came out of the ground since they can burrow, attacking the PCs by surprise and grappling them (i can confirm that once thing remains a constant between 1E and 3E: the grapple rules are as unwieldy). Between Xorn popping out of the ground and the big-hitting fighters unable to lay down their high-damage hits because of the grappling foes, it had been quite a thing for them to get the Xorn scales.
Anyway, as for the item to be created, how about:
Shield of the Xorn: +1 magic tower shield which gives its wielder cold resistance 10, fire resistance 10 and electricity resistance 5. (About equivalent to a +4 or +5 total bonus) | | The wise man doubts often. The ignorant, sometimes. The fool, never.

| ok, so i updated with some suggestions from Zenthrus, Kaya, and Skyscraper. Thanks folks!
gss_000: yes. i do want to add more to the list. thats the point. have any unique suggestions?
ok, so Winter Wolf pelts are worth cash money in Baldur's Gate, any idea why? probably because they don't have any pockets. What use does winter wolf pelt have on the market? Cold resistance?

Or maybe they are just rare and make really comfortable cloaks, making them a status symbol- although granting cold resistance wouldn't be a bad bet either.
Other ideas: Making a all-wood weapon out of treeant wood automatically makes it Masterwork or better.
Dragon's Teeth as daggers or spear points- Perhaps have them deal one point of associated energy damage per hit.
Leather Armor made out of trollskin: Armor that regenerates any damage delt to it, making it much tougher, providing +1 bonus to AC.
More uses for dragons: Make a ring out of a hollowed out dragon bone, gain Energy resistance 5 to associated energy type.
None of these come from any official book, just my head, so feel free to make what use of them you can. | | Call me: W.N. Gobo! originally posted by grim: While he is clearly insane, he does have a point.
