When your a PC what makes you say ah, crap!...for me

1. "Old" and up dragons...Lets face it. When a DM uses a dragon the right way and to its full potential it can be all but unbeatable..One of the physically most powerful creatures around and is often times a 15th or above level spellcaster with tons of magical items laying around. Hundreds if not thousands of years to prepare for you..Bad mojo...
2. Level draining undead....I hate almost more than anything to face undead with level drain..losing levels makes me sick to my stomach..
3. balors/Pit fiends etc..High level devils and demons are a pain to deal with. Of course when facing a Pit fiend he has waited all year to use his wish on you,LOL

I remember playing Elves and Dwarves as a character class..

Inappropriate EL encounters, and a DM who won't change them on the fly. If you need to bump everybody's stats up and give them uber cool equipment just to survive, you're running the adventure improperly.

Lack of preparation and ingenuity. Some people can run a game off the cuff. Those that can't, need to prepare.

Bodak's kind of suck too... But only because I lost a tournament because I rolled a one on the save. Stupid...

Yup, save or die effects are not conducive to fun. Slower leveling is not conducive to fun. Getting more hit points and a new spell at a level and no other bell and whistle is not conducive to fun.

It's funny, back in 84 when I was playing 1E, I was having fun.

What happened?

I find the elimination of save vs die effects to be amusing. Designers say it isn't fun to have such arbitrary save vs die effects and yet getting bitten in half by a dragon (instant kill) is okay.

Crazy.

Riddles are annoying. Nothing pulls me out of a game more than that.

I also hate death traps, by which I means encounters designed to kill PCs and show how cool a DM is morethan the enjoyment of everyone.

As for creatures, beholders more than anything else. Again, save or die is no fun.

Edit: I forgot, I hate shadows.  I really hate touch attacks for ability damage that kills you when you get to 0.

Well, back in 84 when I was palying D&D I was having fun, too, but save or die was not part of it.  Hated them then and ate them now.

There's a differnece between the dragon situation you describe and save or die.  It's so rare to have that happen and in most cases, I put my PC in that situation if it does happen.  I haven't gotten out of the way, I wanted to do a full attack, etc.  I had recourse to get out. Save or die just bones PCs more than NPCs, in my experience.  Also, it seems to ruin encounters both for PCs and for DMs.

Bad GMing is an obvious. But what really narks me is the GM using his favourite NPC to join the party, complete the adventure and take all the glory while not letting the PCs do anything. Said NPC is always uber-powerful and no PC can ever challenge him and if they do they automatically lose without rolling any dice because the NPC is that good because the GM says so!!!!!

The other thing is the competetive GM.
1) They go out of the way to beat the players!
2) Try and outdo other GMs bad guys."oh, and he is so powerful, he's more powerful than the bad guy in your campaign!"

Deus ex machina. I don't want a DM to drag me through his story line. Let the players tell the story.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

I hate feats like weapon focus and then you find a better weapon later on that isnt your focus. i hate level gaining where there isnt a signigant gain like the level before or the next level . I hate rolling 1's when leveling and i need every hitpoint i can get. i hat experienced dm's who create encounters for the purpose of TPK.

Mechanics permeating the adeventure setting.

In other words, i don't like it when, in an (usually combat) encounter, you realize that all the environment has been arranged for your skills and spells to come into effect in a specific manner. I prefer an opened encounter setting where stuff happens according to where your actions take you (often a random location), not where the storyline takes you; and then if there happens to be skills-related conditions, so be it, if not that's fine too.

It appears like in the recent commercial adventures you need to manage balance checks here and strength checks there and blah blah blah when i play can almost read the adventure text behind what's happening, that's how unnatural it sounds to me sometimes. I've played in an adventure recently where you ran through chicken cages, the latter would get all excited and jump around in the cages raising feathers everywhere, thereby providing concealment to anyone standing in the feathers for a few rounds. Or as we ran through crates, we'd need to manage balance checks or fall and one of my PCs actually got stuck in the crates for like 4 rounds of consecutive fallling... it all sounded so... artificial. Who the heck falls down 4 times in a row because of boxes lying on the ground? Anyway.

I too am finding it hard at time to motivate players to do whatever they like.  I think that some players have been used to being railroaded in the past they think that's the only play to Role-Play.  All I can do is flesh out my campaign world and hope to inspire them to seek out adventure.

Thats ok. i can take it. i guess i liked the jump from 2 to 3.5 that im willing to accept 4.0. im not jumping into the 4.0 pit without a ladder to get out and my investment in 3.5 was average at best except on the mins game. i just never liked the feeling of getting a level where the gain was minimal or you were given a feat you probably will never use. In my opinion half the feats in the players handbook were useless. im all for the guy who wants a little flavor to their character but im more the guy who says nope i dont want flavor give me something that helps them enemy miss me or helps me hit better/harder. its funny but now since 4.0 information has come out i call "nap time" when the wizard/cleric is out of spells.

Thats ok. i can take it. i guess i liked the jump from 2 to 3.5 .....snip

Most of us did. We liked it because 2E had become so bloated and unwieldy. Most people (I believe anyway) were ready for 3E. A lot fewer people are ready for 4E. A lot of people saw the need for 3E. Not so much for 4E.

Negative adventure design.

By that I mean, the DM finds ways to make sure a character can't use a class feature/feat/spell on a regular basis simply because he, as a DM, does not know how to deal with it.

Indeed.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com
