| | 12/29/2007 10:54 AM | Alert | The siblings return to the inn to rest for a while. As twilight approaches, they freshen up and make their way to Madame Hucrele's house. The house is made of stone, with an upper story, and real glass in the windows. The entrance features a intricately carved door in fine wood, with a large brass knocker in the center. Luna notices beds of the red flowers like the ones that Susanna gave her, on each side of the entry. Aust uses the knocker (while noticing a very expensive looking locking mechanism on the door), and the young serving girl who had given them the letter earlier opens the door. She seems discomfitted to see Aust as she opens the door, but quicklly regains her composure. "Greetings, travellers. Please come inside. My mistress awaits you," she says with a timorous voice and downcast eyes.
Luna enters first, thanking the girl. The siblings behold a finely appointed room, with pale blue marble on the floor, small but vivid tapestries on the walls, and a carved wooden table with four upholstered chairs. "Madam will be with you momentarily," the girl says, and goes into another room. The siblings do not wait long until a curtain to another room is parted, and Madame Hucrele enters. She appears to be approching 40 years, but is still quite lovely dressed in golden silk body hose, with a purple velvet longcoat, jeweled belt, and a jeweled tiara framing her flaming red hair. Aust notices a large gold signet ring on her finger.
"Greetings, and welcome to my home. I am Kerowyn Hucrele. Please be seated, and I'll have Mitzi bring us some refreshment." "Thank you for receiving us, and greetings to you as well. I am Luna, and these are my brothers, Aust and Barias. We got your note concerning employment, and would know more about your offer," Luna says, seating herself at the far end of the table. The brothers take their seats as the serving girl, Mitzi, brings a tray with a silver carafe and goblets. As she pours them wine, her hand shakes a little with nervousness, and she spills some of it on the linen placemats. "Mitzi, you clumsy girl! This is no way to serve our guests!" Kerowyn scolds. "Clean your mess, and take care not to upset the goblets. I apologize for my servant. It is difficult to entertain with this girl, who has been taught to serve well, yet forgets everything she knows when it is time to put her skills to use." Mitzi appears as if she will cry, but quickly cleans the spill and scurrries off to the kitchen. "It is just a spill, no real harm done," Luna offers, noticing that Aust appears to be scowling. "Tis no matter to concern yourselves with, I'll deal with that silly girl later. I hope that you enjoy the wine, as it is a paticularly good vintage," Kerowyn says as she takes a sip.
"I notice a resemblance between all of you, yet how can that be, as you are of the elven blood, and you are surely of the race of man," she says, gesturing between Luna and Barias. "Our father was elven, and our mother was human," Luna says. "Ah, the fruit of a blessed union, I'm sure. Your parents must be very proud," Kerowyn says, her voice catching as she utters the last sentence, but continues on.
"Well, shall we get down to business? As my note said, I have an offer of employment which you might find interesting. It is readily apparent from your garb and the weapons that you are carrying, that you are well prepared for a challenge, and I perceive that there is intelligence and skill to back that up from your demeanor. Calamity has befallen my house. You see, I am a proud parent as well. I have a son and a daughter, both of whom are missing. Talgen and Sharwyn are their names. A little over a month ago, a Paldin of Pelor arrived in Oakhurst. I believe that he was visiting with our healer, Corkie Nackle. A month before his arrival, and continuing to the present, there have been disappearances of folk and their livestock in the outlying farms. Questions arose as to what was happening, as the few who were found had no markings that would indicate a voilent death, such as from wolves or other creatures. It was feared that some new evil had arisen to plauge us, and once the paladin had heard the tale, he was determined to uncover its source."
"Of course, Talgen and Sharwyn wanted to join him, as it had been a year since they had returned from their studies in Cormyr, and were eager for adventure. Talgen studied the martial arts, and was a fighter of no small skill, and Sharwyn was a talented wizard, graduating with high marks from the mage school that she attended. They set out for the south with a ranger by the name of Karakas as their guide, as that was the area that the disappearances were occuring in. The last they were seen was outside of the hills south of Oakhurst, by one of Felosial's deputies. They told him that they would continue to travel south to investigate a ruin that was located there."

That was a month ago, and we have seen nor heard a trace of them since. South of the bridge on the old road is an accursed land, and the people of Oakhurst do not go there. An old ruin is located there, which was once the site of an ancient evil temple, if the tales be believed. In any event, it is said that the evil was so great, that the gods opened the earth and swallowed the structure whole. I fear that they were lost there, or have met with some evil that they could not overcome." Kerowyn breaks down as she say this, but soon recovers herself. "We are very sorry for your loss," says Luna, "please tell us more."
"I want you to travel south to the ruin, find my children, and bring them back alive if you can, or proof of their death if you are too late. They both wear a signet ring like this (she holds out her hand for them to see the ring). I am a successful businesswoman, with all of the material wealth I could want, but that is nothing compared to my children, who I love with all my heart (voice tremors). Find my children for me, and I will make it worth your while." "Here is my offer," she says as she draws a scroll from her sleeve. | |

"I have something that may prove to be very useful in your quest," Kerowyn says. She takes a small wrapped object from her pocket, and unwraps it to show to the siblings. "This is a magical apple," she says, revealing four quarter slices of the fruit. "I have been told that if you suffer a wound or illness of any sort, eating one of these pieces will heal you. It was purchased at a great cost, so use it wisely. The siblings each take a piece, and wrap it with cloth that Kerowyn provides.
"There is one more piece left, and you may be wondering what I shall do with it. The time has come to introduce you to your fourth companion on your quest. His name is Sir Ronick, a paladin of the holy order of Helm. He will accompany and aid you in your completion of this task. Sir Ronick, come join us!" A curtain parts, and the siblings behold a man nearing the 20 year mark, dressed in a shiny bronze breastplate covered with a blue tabard. He is girt with a longsword, and a shield is strapped to his back. His steel holy symbol depicting the all seeing eye of Helm hangs from a long sturdy chain upon his breast - a very serious and deadly looking individual. He performs a curt bow to Madame Hucrele, and then to the siblings. "Well met, Sir Paladin," Luna says cautiously. "As Madame Hucrele has said, I am pleged to aid you in this task. If by my life you need succor to complete this mission, I will give it. But I must also warn you, I have given my oath to either find the Madam's children and the paladin who leads them, or perish in the attempt. I will not suffer foolish acts or selfish gain in this attempt. Choose your course carefully, as Helm is watching you," Sir Ronick coolly declares. "I am sure we all are striving for a similar outcome, and we welcome your aid," Luna states boldly.
"Well then, we are all in agreement! That being settled, I suggest that you get a good night's rest, as Sir Ronick has told me that he wishes to leave tomorrow morning. I have heard that you have employed the services of Troubador Aneas," Kerowyn says, looking to Barias. "After I freshen up, I will join you. It has been a while since I have heard a good tale, and I am certain that Aneas will not disappoint. Mitzi, you lazy girl! Draw my bath for me while I show our guests out." | |

See to it that you are ready when I summon you at dawn." The siblings exchange glances at each other, but brush it off as the rough demeanor of the paladin must be due to his dedication.
They are soon seated and served a delicious meal of sallets with bread and cheese, and roast pork with a blackbird pie. The mayor joins them as the dishes arrive, and joins in a polite banter as they enjoy their meal. The tavern soon becomes croweded with people anxious to see Aneas' performance. Barias belches loudly as Cheryl removes their plates, and Lucy serves them chilled wine. "I see that Garon is pulling out all of the stops for this evening," the mayor remarks, winking at Cheryl. "Well it is a special occasion," Lucy replies, "as this may be the last home cooked meal these folks see for a while."
Luna wonders to herself how they would know about their deal with Madame Hucrele so quickly, but instead of saying anything, she thanks the serving girls, and the group settles back to await the performance. | |

Most of those present simply cannot believe that such evil once dominated the very lands that they called their homes now. After a moment all join in a sincerely appreciative applause, as Aneas smiles and bows modestly. Of those clapping, one of the loudest is Barias, his mind filled with images of the great battle against the dragon's fury. As he sits down, fully satisfied that he received his money's worth, the mayor leans over and tells him that it is quite possible that the temple mentioned in the tale is the sunless citadel. "No one know for sure, as few documents from that time period survive. None have entered the citadel, although a few have seen the crevice that it supposedly lies within. The land south of the bridge is a wild and tameless land, filled with ruins from a bygone age that many creatures of an evil sort would inhabit. You would do well to use the upmost caution in your exploration," he warns.
As the taven begins to empty, the mayor bids the siblings farewell, and leaves with Madame Hucrele and Jacob. Cheryl lets them know that their rooms are ready if they are finished, and they retire for the evening. It will be a very busy day for them tomorrow. | |

| | 02/09/2008 7:38 AM | Alert | A loud thumping on the door awakes the siblings from their slumber. "Awake and gather your things! It is past dawn, and we should already be on our way. Did I not tell you to be ready for my summons?!" Sir Ronick angrily gripes. The siblings wash the sleep from their eyes and gather their gear. Barias is feeling paticularly groggy from all of the ale that he consumed the night before. They hurriedly break their fast with bread and butter that Cheryl has laid out for them in the common room, and Garon and the girls wish them luck on their quest. They find Sir Ronick impatiently waiting for them outside. "We will take the old road south, as Felosial imforms me that it is still quite easy to follow, and will take us directly to the citadel."
As they are leaving, John rushes up to them with an anguished look on his face. "Good friends, I know that your thoughts are on the dangerous task ahead, but please spare a moment for me - we have lost Betsy! Susanna was watching her graze in the south field yesterday afternoon, and she fell asleep. When she awoke, Betsy was nowhere to be found! We searched into the evening without any luck. Since you are going far afield, I beg of you to keep an eye out for her. Our family's fate rests on the sale of that cow, without which, we will become beggars before this month is ended!" John breaks down to cry, and appears inconsolable. Aust quietly explains the situation to Sir Ronick, as Luna tries to calm the distraught man. Sir Ronick approaches John, and unstraps a small pouch from his belt. "This should help you in your time of need," he says, giving the pouch to John. John unties the pouch with trembling hands and empties 15 gold crowns into his palm. He almost spills the coins in astonishment, as this is more wealth than he has seen in his life. "Use it wisely, and may Helm watch over you and your family," Sir Ronick says sqeezing his shoulder. The party continues on, leaving a stupified John standing there. "That was a marvelous gesture," Luna says to the paladin. "The church of Helm aids those in need," Sir Ronick says simply. Luna begins to think that maybe the paladin is not so hard after all. | |

| | 02/09/2008 6:15 PM | Alert | Five miles out from Oakhurst, Aust spots something white in the tall grass, about 100 ft. off the road. The party carefully investigates, and finds Betsy the cow. She is lying on her side, with her head back, eyes wide, and tongue sticking out. Luna examines her, and confirms that she is dead. Upon first examination, Luna sees no apparent cause of death. Puzzled, she examines Betsy's corpse more closely, and finds that she has hundreds of tiny puncture wounds, almost needle-like in size, all over her body. No one in the party knows what could cause such wounds, other than insects, yet no stingers were left behind. Aust then notices a twig underneath one of Betsy's legs. He carefully lifts the leg and finds that the twig is stuck into it. A trace of a black sticky substance remains on it's needle-like tip, and Luna posits that it is some kind of poison. Luna insists that the party bury the cow (much to Sir Ronick's annoyance), thinking it would not do for John to come across her in this state.
The party continues on, aware that evil has indeed crossed over the river from the south. The road is easy to follow, as Felosial said, and the party makes good time. After making their way cautiously through the hills, the party arrives at an ancient bridge as dusk begins to fall. After some discussion, they decide to cross the bridge and make camp on the other side for the night. Barias mans the first watch, struggling to stay awake to the sound of the gurgling water feeding into Lake Helvetica. | |

As he opens his eyes he beholds a gruesome stick-like creature stabbing at him with needle sharp claws. Had it not been for the heavy leather jerkin that he wore beneath his chainmail, the claws would have pierced his skin. He rises with a shout, and attacks the loathsome thing, his cries bringing the others running. Barias' siblings and Sir Ronick surround the stick creature, and with their help it is soon destroyed. "This must be one of the things that attacked the cow, Betsy," Luna says, while examining the remains of the creature. Sir Ronick states that he will watch the rest of the night, as siblings may have problems staying awake. Luna bristles at this comment (especiallly since she, as an elf does not require sleep), but says nothing as Barias did fail in his duty. The rest of the night passes without incident. | |

They assemble at the bridge, and see two men in the leathers worn by Felosial's deputies riding two heavy horses with two more lighter horses in tow. The deputies stop at the bridge’s edge and come no closer. "Hail siblings and paladin," one of the deputies cries. "My name is Ben, and this is Lu." The party crosses the other side of the bridge to talk to the men. "Hail deputies," Sir Ronick says, "what news do you bring?" "We are here on the request of Madame Hucrele, who has responded to your inquiries of Felosial regarding mounts for your quest. She sends these horses to aid in your quest, holding their worth against the reward you will receive," Deputy Ben states. “That was very, urm, generous of her.” Barias says wryly. “Indeed it was. If you recall, Barias, the nature of our contract stipulates that we are to be rewarded after the quest is completed. Madam Hucrele owe us nothing until we succeed,” Luna observes.
“There is also the matter of this,” Deputy Ben says, handing over a folded note to Aust. “Before we left, Madame Hucrele’s servant begged me to give you this. She seemed to be very upset about the matter, so we agreed to deliver it.”

I spoke at length with Madame Hucrele, and detected no ill will from her,” Sir Ronick states. “Hmm, it seems as if she trying to get your attention Aust, although her methods may be misguided,” Luna says. “Nevertheless, we should only eat the apples when there is no other aid or recourse,” Aust warns.
As the party ponders the letter, the deputies appear to be setting up camp. No longer interested in the crazed ranting of a lovesick girl, Sir Ronick asks the deputies what they are doing. “We will await you here on your return,” Ben says. “But we will need the horses to travel on to the ruin. Are you not going with us to watch over them,” Sir Ronick asks, clearly annoyed. “The horses are yours to do with as you please. We will not cross the bridge – the land beyond is accursed. The people of Oakhurst do not travel there, nor will we,” Ben states flatly. “You should leave soon, if you are to make the ruin before nightfall.”

Traces of the old road are faint in places, but for the most part the ancient road endures. After a few hours of marching, they catch glimpses of a barren, wasted landscape to the west. A vague sense of unease descends over the party, making the paladin especially moody. “This truly is a cursed land,” he gripes. “I wonder if that is the Ashen Plain the bard spoke of. If so, that is where the great battle with the dragon occurred,” Barias notes with excitement. The party marches on. | |

The group is cold and wet as they espy broken columns in the distance, located in a shallow bowl-shaped valley. “That must be where the Sunless Citadel lies,” says Luna. Wisps of fog in the valley make it difficult to see the columns with any clarity. Leaving the road and moving closer, the party sees that the columns mark the sides of a large ravine 60 feet across and at least 120 feet in length. There are rude symbols painted on the columns, which Aust guesses to be goblin. To everyone’s annoyance, Barias insists on tossing a rock over the edge to judge the distance to the bottom. A few seconds pass before any sound is heard. “Of course, that alerts anything that is below of our presence,” Sir Ronick angrily mutters. “Let’s stop arguing and try to find a way down – look! Over here is a rope! I’ll go first,” Aust replies, lighting a torch and dropping it below. After a few minutes, his voice echoes from below that he has reached a ledge, and that the others should follow. Sir Ronick is the next to descend, his armor making a lot of noise as he clambers over the edge. | |
