these are made from a mage armor spell so wouldn't the bracers be considered deflective armor instead of reg. armor? in the spell write up it says incorporeal cannot pass this protection.

Thanks, realmaster. Let's split up!!!!!

Just because mage armor is used to make them does not mean that they have the same time of bonus as the spell. They are a regular armor bonus. This is so that they cannot stack with regular armor.

Bracers of Armor give an armor bonus. Despite using Mage Armor as the base spell, the item functions differently than the spell. Rings of Protection are the item for deflection bonuses.

ok, so shouldn't an incorporeal not be able to pass the armor bonus from them? I know what the rules say I am just asking opinions. :)

Does Mage Armor allow incorporeal attacks or does it protect from it? There's the answer there...

Personally, I would say it'd protect from incorporeal attacks. It's how I've always done it.

Just a simple traveler from the swamps of Dagobah otherwise known as Florida. Also known as Hurricane Alley!
I always try to send through delivery confirmation, and I expect the same. It's only 55 cents extra, so it's just a little more than a pay phone call, so just do it for the Kai. I prefer to trade with people in the US and Canada, sorry everyone else.

From the SRD:
"Unlike mundane armor, mage armor entails no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or speed reduction. Since mage armor is made of force, incorporeal creatures can’t bypass it the way they do normal armor."

Mage Armor creates an exception to the rules for armor. Since Bracers of Armor don't specifically cite this exception, they don't specifically grant the bonus.

We've always run by the rules with this one. Haven't seen any major game balance issues that would convince me to give Mage Armor exceptions to Bracers of Armor.

The spell is an ingredient to the making of the item. This does not mean the item causes the caster to benefit from the spell. This is just a mechanic to show which spell is needed to make magic items. In earlier editions, they didn't bother to say which spells were needed to make what items (IIRC). This is more for flavor and to help characters have means of making magic items. The item functions as is described in the DMG, not with any interpretations of what could be based on what effects spells which are required to make certain items grant when the spell is cast directly on someone. Bracers of armor do not grant the specific description of bonuses exactly as described by the spell mage armor. They grant the bonuses spelled out in the DMG which, as zenthrus said, do not say that bracers of armor have a force field around them causing incorporeals to have problems.

Corim's nailed this one on the head. Cake doesn't taste like eggs, nor have all the attributes of eggs. But it wouldn't be cake without them.
