I'm looking at the 0 level spell launch bolt in a spell index and it's description seems a little vague to me. It says that the spell launches a crossbow bolt like that of a light crossbow. It doesn't mention anything about whether or not an attack roll is still necessary to hit and if it would be calculated at the casters base attack bonus or not. VS are its components so I'm assuming the spell conjures up the bolt out of thin air. Could someone shed a little light on this one for me? Thanks.

Launch bolt is one of those 0 level spells that I enjoy so much. All it really does is allow a caster to shoot crossbow bolts without having to carry around a clunky old crossbow. You still have to roll to hit, and I'm pretty sure that the somatic component is a crossbow bolt, so you have to provide that as well. As I recall there was another 0 level spell in a 3rd party sourcebook that created bolts from thin air, but couldn't launch them. These 2 spells were really more fun for assassins (or would be assassins) as they left no evidence. Hope that helps :)

Wouldn't it be VSM if you had to provide the bolt for the spell? Bolt = Material component. The bolt itself is certainly not a Somatic component. Somatic represents guestures.

What would you use as modifiers to the attack roll for this spell. Base attack bonus + Dex Bonus?

Launch Bolt VSM 1 standard Touch range Instantaneous No Save/No Spell Resistance Cast the spell on a crossbow bolt. You then make a normal ranged attack (Dex + BAB) against a target of your choice. Bolt has a ranged increment of 80 feet. Any properties the bolt possesses (magic, masterwork, silver, etc.) apply. Any feats you have (Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus [light crossbow]) also apply. Drawing the bolt is a free action.

Thanks. The online index I found its description in must not be complete. It only mentions that this spell has Verbal and somatic components. It must have been revised at some point. It for sure makes more sense for it to be VSM. I like the combination of flame arrow with this spell.
