| Sometime in the not too distant future, I'm wanting to DM a futuristic, Outer Space campaign for a change. Problem is, I haven't ever really looked at any of the rule sets out there. I definitely don't want to run Star Wars(3.xe), but it has a big plus for it....I know a guy with the books and wouldn't have to spend any $. I know d20 Future is also out there and RedSkullz mentioned a Palladium setting he really liked.
Anyway, I know what I want in the game, just not what game meets as many of those needs as possible.
1. Concise, easy ship battle rules. nearly every set of ship battle rules I've seen for D&D has been clunky and time consuming. I'm looking for something fast paced. Easily usable with miniatures is a +.
2. Relatively easily customizable. I'll be ignoring most, if not all of the fluff of the setting because I want to base the main aliens loosely on some of my favorites from Star Control 2. I want to be able to represent those races without hours of tedious work.
3. If I end up using something that's not d20, it has to be easy to learn and intuitive.
So I guess the real question is, "Is the 3.x version of Star Wars what I'm looking for?" If not, I would be much obliged for any suggestions. | | The year: 1994. | | The ship rules from the last SWRPG were hardly what you'd call simple. Most of the sci-fi games I've run using the Gurps system. I'm not sure how the ship rules work there, most of our combats were firefights and hand to hand skirmishes. _______________________________________________________________
For something like this, I'd say the simpler the system the better. In one of the Eden Studios Presents they had some neat rules for their All Flesh must be Eaten game. It was Firefly with the serial numbers filed off. Even better it game you fairly simple rules for a group of players to build their own ship. The points used come out of their characters freebies. I don't know how ship combat works in unisystem, but I doubt it's overly complicated. | | Pathetic Earthlings. | | AFMBE and Serenity are both very very easy, intuitive systems that are easily modified...and the core book for AFMBE has the D20 conversions in the index... | | Shottglazz "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand; I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

| Of course there's WOD/Storytelling system... Trinity for example is a scifi-setting. And, staying close to D20, is True20. I think there's some space battle rules in True20 companion or somewhere, I can check if you're interested.
I bought Babylon 5 D20 some time ago, but haven't read it too much yet. One thing about it is that heavy hits can be deadly by themselves and hitpoints are increased by much smaller amounts than in normal D20. Not sure about it's space combat, but I'm studying B5 space combat rules too.
But about space combat in RPG - it might work actually better without strict rules. | | Vindicated AtG Called shot: 2nd Huge Red Dragon My collected trade reference links Star Wars tactical combat -project My modelling/terrain pages Suomen miniatyyrikeräilijät / Miniature collectors of Finland | |
