 | | 01/18/2008 11:24 PM | Alert | The Dragonlance DVD has been released - Dragons of Autumn Twilight and I noticed an eBay seller peddling it off at a reaonable price. The item and it's description is linked below:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110216224836&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com.au%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D110216224836%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1
For those of you who cant access eBay, or those of you who who believe following these kinds of links will lead to the virus hacker terrorist stealing your credit cards, here is the interesting part of the seller's description:
"There's 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.""Share my misery, buy this disgusting piece of pathetic drivel so I can get it out of my house!"
"Seriously, I rate this movie, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, a negative four hundred thirty-six. So please, give me a couple pennies for it. It's more than this crap is worth, but I deserve the money just for having sat through the whole disaster of a DVD."
I found it quite entertaining (the seller's description that is) and even after such a harsh review I will still most likely obtain a copy for myself. | | ScruffyRanger's Promo Page! Check it out here!

 | | 01/21/2008 5:15 AM | Alert | I watched it last night. I was amazed at how much of the story that they managed to capture in the movie. True it was a pretty rough edit, ie encounter to encounter but I thought it was a fun watch. Animation was OK, voice acting was kinda crap. Lex Luthor as Tanis is very strange, though Keifer as Raistlin seemed to work.
I haven't researched if they are making the next one or not yet but I hope so. | | Champion of the Aspect of Gruumsh Nemesis of Gnomes and Warforged

Now, I'm not saying they have the resources Disney has, but surely they could have done better than what they produced.

 | | 01/22/2008 7:08 AM | Alert | i give it 1 out of 5.
1. The mixing of animations didnt work and the movie would have been much better with all 2d animation. 2. the soundtrack at certain points drowns out the dialogue. 3 Laurana making out with Elistan!! Why? 4. the forestmaster become a unicorn covered in vines? why 5. every scene felt rushed 6. lots of character left out or thrown in with no backstory such as bupa 7. Felt like religion was more of a issue then was conveyed in books 8. breaks between animation. I felt that they were trying too make room for commercials 9. Tiak jiggles 10. the draconian monks talk perfect common
I would say that the animation, presentation and acting in the original hobbit movie was better than the Dragonlance movie.

As an animator myself, I can tell you that it's very likely that they were done by different people. A lot of animated films are created by different studios. Each studio is given a certain portion of the film to work on and then they are edited together.
Take the Iron Giant for example (which by coincidence also had 2d and 3d animation mixed together...but actually did a good job with it). The giant robot has a certain type of walk cycle (aweful) in the beginning of the film. Later in the film you will notice that it walks differently and is a much better walk cycle.
The day that I first saw the screenshot of 3d draconians and 2d characters for this DL movie I knew it was going to be crap. You have to be very careful if you're mixing both mediums, and you should never mix the mediums between characters! That's hard on the average viewer to watch. It's hard enough pulling off a 3d environment with 2d characters (or vise versa). The art directors for this film are really bad at their job...they missed the last of the 12 principles of animation; which is Appeal. On their own, the 2d or 3d characters are ok, but put together they are a huge eyesore.

 | | 01/27/2008 1:45 PM | Alert | I just watched this movie and it actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting from the reviews. The animation wasn't that great to look at, but the movie overall was pretty decent. The ending was really rushed, but the rest of the movie included more content from the novels then I expected. Most of the movie was based on the first book of the series.
It's the typical Sartuday morning type of cartoon and shouldn't be looked at as an animation for mature audiences, so it was a bit corny. But I didn't think it was annoying to watch or anything. I can actually see this as being a good movie for a kid to own. This might have been one of those type of movies that I woulda watched over & over as a kid.

What are the other 11 principles? 1. Squash and stretch - for example, when a ball bounces, gravity stretches it as it falls or bounces up and a ball will squash a little when it hits the ground.
2. Anticipation - a brief pause before you perform an action. for example, when you throw a ball, you pull your arm back and hold it for a split second before bringing it forward to release the ball. (it's usually an opposite action of the main action being performed...backward then forward, ect)
3. Staging - composition of a scene & placement of objects or characters in the scene.
4. Straight Ahead Action or Pose to Pose - drawing each frame one after the other, or skipping frames to draw main poses of a character (key frames), then going back and filling in the drawings for the frames between the main poses.
5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action - when your main part of your animation stops and the other parts still move to catch up. For example when you turn your head really fast, your head moves first while your hair moves after the head turns. When your head stops, your hair keeps moving until it catches up to the head and then stops.
6. Slow In and Slow Out - When an object begins to move it starts slow and then speeds up...when it comes to a stop, it gradually eases into it's stopping position. WIthout doing this, objects just pop into motion quickly and also suddenly stop "on a dime". It's kinda jerky looking.
7. Arcs - rather than animate in straight lines, it's better to animate in an arcing motion. When you throw a ball, your fist doesn't move straight across in a horizontal path...it barely arcs in an upward then downward motion (an arc).
8. Secondary Action - add another motion to a character to emphasize it's action. When a ball bounces it moves up and down...but the ball is also rotating around as it moves up and down. Or if you run, your legs move quickly but your hips also rotate from side to side.
9. Timing - drawing more or less frames to get the movement looking like it's moving at the right pace.
10. Exaggeration - This is when you "cheat" and draw your object in a position that isn't correct in the real world. Doing this makes the motion look "cooler". Like when Spiderman swings on his webbing or is dodging bullets, his back bends backwards more than what is actually possible...but it looks awesome when he does it.
11. Solid Drawing - Your objects or characters need to look like they have volume & weight even though they are flat images on the screen. South Park is a good example of not having solid drawings because you can tell that the characters & buildings are really flat.
12. Appeal - The animation and artwork needs to be easy on the eyes and nice to look at. People can have different opinions on if a film has appeal since some might like the look and others might not. The 2d & 3d animation in Dragonlance wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. It didn't help it's appeal by sticking 2 very different mediums together when neither one was very good & they were both very different.

 | | 02/15/2008 2:14 AM | Alert | So I watched it yesterday. I'm a dye-in-the-wool fan, I had to own it even if I knew about the bad reviews.
It wasn't good. What's worse is that it was a bad movie made from (imo) good components. The character designs looked good and felt 'right' to me. The voice actors seemed to do well enough. Unfortunately it has extreme pacing issues (and a complete lack of ambience in scenes, you're pretty much just fed each scene straight-on) with weird cuts and the storyline is... well, let's say I agree with Hickman it should have been two movies per book.
The mixing of CGI and traditional animation is atrocious and looks like early 1990's TV. It's not even on the level of present-day terrible CGI, it's OLD terrible CGI.
It can't decide if it's a kid movie where violence is offscreen and there's no blood or if it's a teen-adult movie with bouncing boobs, rotting corpses strung from gibbets and spurting blood. It's schizophrenic to watch.
All in all, it's kids fare, and weak such as well. Just because someone is a kid is no reason to let them watch substandard cartoons. ;)
Finally, some weird stuff I noticed:
Why does Khisanth very briefly appear as a scantily clad girl with wings in the start of the movie, then immediately transform into her dragon shape and fly off? It had no purpose whatsoever in the plot, and it certainly wasn't in the book.
Laurana's fighting gear was directly copied from the nice lady showcasing elven chainmail in the 3.5 DMG. In the scenes where they enter the Sla-Mori, she magically switches between the elven chainmail and her "villager" attire from earlier.
Why reveal that Fizban is Paladine in the first movie? And why a crappy fight between him and Takhisis? Well, once again that's the "no ambience" bit.
Tika's boobs. Nuff said.
