I'm working on an adventure, Warzone, and the basic overview is that a gnoll army is advancing on a small border town, and the PC's have to slow it down enough that reinforcements can arrive in time to save the town.

So, what can the PC's do to slow it down? I have thought about having the gnoll army cross a dammed river and the PC's have to break down the dam. I am keeping this idea but I need more ideas as that will not take a whole adventure.

Also, any beginner adventure writing advice would be well appreiciated.

- They could cut off food supply trains, even a gnoll army doesnt get as far without food/water/replacement arms
- 'encourage' a tribe of giants/whatever, or a bigger nasty to be in the way of advancing army
- Steal something of value, or enrage the chieftains to waste time chasing the heroes instead of marching
- If they had time or druid PC/Ally, grow thorny vines or the like across trails, or if cold/winter, use water to ice for similar effect
- Arrange a fake (or real) haunting or something to casue troops morale to break, and make less speed
- Plant fake treasure for the gnolls to chase after
- Hit and run tactics, make the Gnolls look over shoulders and slow down to defend against raids on their xxx. In particular take out leaders so they have to stop and vote/fight in the next leader.
- Leave plenty of beer and spirits, (tainted or spoiled if less than honourable PCs) for the gnolls to consume
- misdirect, change road signs, land marks, maps as much as possible
- avalanches/land slides over trails

Those are all nice ideas. I like the idea of taking something to attract their attention and actually leading them into danger. I'm thinking of having the PC's lead them into a canyon and dropping rocks on them or starting a landslide or something.

You could plan out a list of objectives and timeline for the gnoll army to work towards on their way to the town, such as securing strategic locations, building bridges, outposts and supply depots, and gaining allies. The PCs could spy, scry, or get tips from locals on what the gnoll army is up to, and put forth an effort to delay them at each objective.

You could consider having a smaller village in the area that the gnoll army attacks on the way to the main town. Make sure there is a good escape route from the village so the PCs can lead a fighting retreat against the gnolls there, leading the survivors back to the main town, or the party could ambush the army there after it marches on an evacuated village.

Even if the PCs aren't able to figure out exactly what the army is up to, they can still do plenty of the things already mentioned to try and slow them down by just being creative. If they run out of ideas, maybe an NPC guard captain in the town can give them suggestions.

You could make allies available to the PCs that they could persuade to help them with ambushes, such as a group of druids, rangers, and/or scouts.

I was thinking about the PC's saving a hostage and have him tell them what the army is doing at the time. I love the timeline idea, plotting out the times that everything happens, and if the PC's find it out, they know how to slow it down more. I think I'll put a timeline, and when the PC's do something to slow them it takes off a set amount of time untill they get there, and if the do a thing that the hostage tells them, it reduces it more.

The hostage idea is a very good one, that'll do perfectly.

Another idea would be once the PC have been noticed by the bad guys, to have one of the townsfolk feed them false information or lead them into a trap because his son/daughter/wife etc. is a hostage and they snuck a message to him with the old do as we say or she gets it type thing.
