Depends on the group.

One is more social than just game playing, has a couple of wanderers in it (the sort that have inner instinct that when its their turn they are off making dinner, buying drinks etc) that normally meets about 2pm and plays till about 10-12pm.

Another is nearly always four hours, hard concentrated playing.

At the game shop, I prefer 4 hour session, but effectively with late arrivals and finishing up with discussion, makes three hour game.

We play generally from 7:00-10:00ish weekly, so although usually 3+ hours, it doesn't often get to 4.

We do about 8 hour sessions every other week. We take breaks and goof off here and there though. So it's not 8 hours of straight hardcore gaming

I chose 4-5 hours, as it's what we currently play, with some of us having family/work obligations.

When I was a teenager (I'm 38 now), we'd start at around 6 pm on Friday night, and go 'til 9 am Saturday morning. There'd be pizza breaks and such in between, but we'd go 'til we dropped. Oh, to be young again...

We play every other Tuesday night from 4pm to around 10:30pm, although with everyone arriving, getting settled, ordering and eating pizza, smoke breaks, etc., we usually end up playing for 4 hours... I would love to move our playing time to Sunday afternoons, and with a couple of players moving/going off to school, it looks like this will be possible toward the end of summer.

Most games I run or play in.... they would be in the 4-5 hour range.  However only 2-3 of those hours are realy spent gaming.  There's a fair amount of background chatter and people running down to the cafeteria before it closes.

In the constellation of Cygnus, or Central Connecticut

03/25/2008 4:38 AMAlert
These days my group is running at 4-5 hours per session. Back in 2003, when this group formed we were playing Friday nights for 4-5 hours and then all day Saturday, starting at noon and going to usually 10 or 11. Man, those were fun times. Course back then I was unattached and childless.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner and RPG designer from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute and RPGA certified DM named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark and THAC0. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons, D&D every night. In the spring we'd make meat helmets for LARP. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag, forced to walk the walk of a thousand four siders, and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, which was very handy for D&D. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles for LARP. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

So, 4-5 seems to be the norm. Kinda surprising to me. We've had to play in shortened sessions before and it seemed like we just didn't get enough done, but I suppose it's all in what you're used to and how well you manage the time you have. I really do miss the marathon sessions, even if I don't miss the brutal hangovers that followed.

If you have a heavy role playing group, which I do, then a 4 hour session can sometimes be without one attack role the whole night!  In truth sometimes these are the best gaming sessions!  Right now we are running Return to the Tomb of Horrors and are going on our 5th game night.Â

SPOILER UPCOMING

They have not even entered into the original lair yet so it is expected that we will have at least another 6-10 games before this comes to conclusion.  The group has come back and forth into the Black Academy 2 times already with both being huge battles which lasted most of the night.  They are heading back into the academy again this week for a third run!  This third battle is another which will probably run a good portion of the 4 hour session.  Usually after a huge battle the group chats about what just played out, good or bad!  It is all fun!!     Â
