03/11/2008 6:04 PM Alert
I've been playing D&D since 1979 (8th grade for me).  Played in my early college years, but then had a long hiatus.  I started playing again less than two years ago.  I got together with a group about 5 years ago and at that time we were only playing MtG.  We went to DDM a few years ago, then worked in RPG, and now we do a mix but mostly RPG.

About a month ago a very cool gaming experience occured..!  I got my wife and four children to play D&D for the first time!  They didn't want the first session to end, and were chomping at the bit to play again.

I'm running them through the Scourge of the howling Horde.  It's a good starter.

My wife is playing a Cleric.
My daughter, 13, is playing a Sorceress.
My eldest son, 12, is playing a Fighter.
My middle son, 10, is playing a Ranger.
My youngest son, 8, is playing a Rogue.  Mostly I play the rogue while he plays legos near by, but he rolls the dice.

Session three should be this Saturday!

Thats very cool! Your very lucky, I've tried to get my family to play at least once, but their just not interested. Good luck with that and I hope you have fun.
Little tip: Get a second module or adventure ready right now, not only is SOTHH a small module, but I've seen players who love the game go through modules like a nuke through flash paper. Again, good luck and have fun.

Very cool indeed Gary.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner and RPG designer from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute and RPGA certified DM named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark and THAC0. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons, D&D every night. In the spring we'd make meat helmets for LARP. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag, forced to walk the walk of a thousand four siders, and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, which was very handy for D&D. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles for LARP. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

In a way I'm worried about you. It's one thing to kill a PC and be able to go home or have the group go home so they don't ring your neck. But if your players get mad at you then yer out of luck!

At least none of your players can accuse you of giving special attention to your wifes character like other groups might

It is very cool and a lot of fun. I've been leading them by the hand so far, but I can see my wife is starting to get the hang of the RPG aspect and my oldest son has been DDMing with me for the last two years, so he dives right into the combat (that's why I made him a fighter). I made thier characters strong (32pt buy), and with 5 characters going through this module (it's kind of easy), there is little risk that any of them will die. Some areas seem a little too easy, so I've added a goblin here and there.
Maybe I'll do a write up thread, but I've been doing a lot of procedure writing at work these days, and the energy just isn't there right now.

Thanks for the replys and any input for the next module we should try is most welcome!!!
