OK, just got home from tonight's game. The party (9th level) faced some advanced direguards and advanced flameskulls. The flameskulls cast mirror image early in the fight. Here are my questions: 1. Can a character with whirlwind attack target a flameskull and ALL of its mirror images in a single round full attack? 2. Likewise, can a character with greater cleave hit a mirror image (causing it to disappear) and then proceed to attack the flameskull and all of its remaining mirror images in the same round using this feat? None of my rulings effected the outcome of the encounter, during which the party was resoundingly beaten and ultimately retreated after putting up a wall of force. Any dispensed wisdom is greatly appreciated, as always. SGB

I'm AFB at the moment, but IIRC, as long as both the real flamskull and the mirror image were within reach, I don't see why they couldn't attack them both.

The cleave question is a no, since to cleave you have to "down an opponent" before it can take effect, the disappearing mirror images don't count.

The whole "attacking multiple mirror images" debate is pretty common. And from what I've always seen, nobody fully agrees about any ruling on it.

Another common related question is "can I target each image with each of my magic missiles to make them vanish and help me find the real caster?"

Here is a good discussion on it that might help you come up with a ruling for you situation:

I would personally handle your situations like:

1. Yes.

2. No. If you hit the original caster first and cleave through him, then it won't matter. If you hit an image first, I would consider that a miss since you didn't "kill" anyone or actually hit a real creature & kill it.

I think it's pretty much a DM call. I definitely wouldn't allow the cleave, but for the Whirwind (and magic misile that Oryan mentioned) I would be leaning towards no but open for debate.

magic missiles has always been a spell of choice in all of the games I have been in against mirror image. it says in the right-up in the PH first edition and the 3.5 that if the caster has multiple missiles he/she can target multiple targets.

that is weird that players would ask that question. :)

Thanks, realmaster. Let's split up!!!!!

I think their argument is that you can't "target" an image because it's an illusion and they say that you can't target an illusion with MM since the spell has nothing to lock on to. So these people rule that the missile would just fizz out before it's cast.

I don't remember exactly...I think that debate is discussed in the link I posted.

It was a convincing argument from what I remember. I personally rule that MM works against the mirror images though since that's how I ruled it from the beginning.
