I like it, overall. Good layout, price is a bit much, but worth it, IMHO.

I know some people out there have this. Is there much original work in it? 4 out of 6 maps are reissued and the keep itself is the Keep on the Borderlands. Is the adventure just KotB redux?

I wonder what the odds are that someone will be willing to trade the one map that's original?

the double-sided map is RPG only.
It's not skirmish-friendly

Doesn't matter, I rarely get to skirmish anymore anyway and so far, I'm not that fond of DDM 2.charge-a-thon.

Mine came today, Via Ebay/Amazon.

Ordered on Ebay, arrived via Amazon, looks nice.
Having suggested minatures ala Fantastic Locations woulda been nice.

I bought it last week at B&N and am running it Friday for a group. So far it's a pretty basic adventure, good for learning the rules and getting the hang of things. I like the slip cover/folder, the maps, and that they put the quick start rules both in the book with the pre-gens and in the book with the mod for the DM to use, very good thinking to have at least two copies of the quick start rules. What I'm not impressed with so much is the quality of the booklets themselves, paper is very thin and easily creases. I have been rather careful with it and have creased several pages just trying to put it back in the slipcover when I'm done reading for the night. If at least the mod itself was bound in something a little thicker the cheap paper on the inside would have been easier to protect and acceptable.

As far as original artwork, there is some, but not a lot. Most of the prominent baddies are pictured, but not NPC's.

My biggest complaint with KotS is the quality of the paper used. The packets only have a front cover and the print is of subpar quality. First time I've had a WotC product smear. Didn't spill water or any major grease, just normal fingerprint wear has smeared quite a bit of the back pages of both packets. My color laser printer produces prints just as shiny and they are impossible to smear. It's almost like they used an ink-jet based printer instead of a laser or print-press machine for the copies. That or the production was unreasonably rushed and the print-press ink wasn't given sufficient drying time.

Aside from that....

I like the presentation. The maps are not terribly exciting (virtually all reprints). The Quick Start rules really aren't quite sufficient for running the adventure (doesn't cover some seriously important situations like standing from prone). One of my groups has made it through the first few encounters. Combat runs rather smoothly.

The fluffy bits are written on par with other WotC modules (better than the Fantastic Locations inserts).

Both groups I play with have been rabidly anti-4e but so far everyone is enjoying this module.

I understand why they recycled the King's Road map but would it have killed them to make a new one? However, had they done that, then the skirmishers would be screaming for a DDM legal version, so they can't win either way. LOL!

Zenthrus is completely correct, a heavier stock for the covers would have been a spectacular idea.

Are they usable with dungeon tiles?
