I've seen a lot of talk about how clerics do nothing but walk around and heal the frontline fighters and generally aren't fun to play. Is this the norm? In my experience, they can tend to be excellent frontline fighters themselves, easily capable of surpassing the AC, damage output and attack bonus of the fighter. I've found it to be one of the most versatile classes as well, capable of being an excellent archer and functioning nicely as a spellslinger as well.

The cleric is one of the most frequently played characters in all the games I've DMed since 3e came along nearly 8 years ago and the guys I've played with all love to play one, which is a drastic departure from the "last guy to show up on character creation day has to play the cleric" mentality we had in previous editions. Not having to memorize healing spells gives you the freedom to craft a very versatile spell repertoire and the divine feats finally make Turn Undead useful for something besides occasional crowd control.

I guess I'm just not seeing the "Cleric stinks and just walks around and heals people" viewpoint and find it hard to believe that it seems so prevalent.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn...
A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil.
He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

I loved playing a cleric. My first long term PC and maxminis namesake was Anarion Zelle, Cleric of Tyr. For the most part he was the party leader, and because he was such a dynamic character, quite a bit of the story arc revolved around him. He had incredible versatility, with access to utility and healing spells, the ability to turn undead, and was no slouch when it came to combat. With his ties to the church, he had a ready network of connections throughout the campaign world, and his strong beliefs and complex background (optional) allowed plenty of opportunity for the DM to challenge, and the player to develop this PC. I really think that it all comes down to how the DM and player perceive this class as to whether it is stale and boring, or not.

A cleric is only as Wraith describes if played that way. Obviously, many D&D players only view the class as a heal-bot. (shrug)

Clerics are heal bots? I always assumed that was the Rogue's job (Use Magic Device).

3.5 clerics are if anything over-powered melee fighters. They tend to far outshine fighters after level 8 or so through buff spells.

Clerics are awesome sauce incarnate. You can have a Cleric do just about anything, and usually better than everyone else, to boot.

I love playing clerics, personally, it's my favorite class.

Clerics rock. I like the fact that they can heal, or... Become a front line tank. They have decent HP, they have heavy armor, and the spells they can dish out is just great.

Just a simple traveler from the swamps of Dagobah otherwise known as Florida. Also known as Hurricane Alley!
I always try to send through delivery confirmation, and I expect the same. It's only 55 cents extra, so it's just a little more than a pay phone call, so just do it for the Kai. I prefer to trade with people in the US and Canada, sorry everyone else.
