| I was running RttToEE for our work gaming group when 4e came out. When the party met a TPK at the hands (wisps?) of a trio of Shadows, my fiance' decided it would be a good time for him to give 4e DMing a try (he had been learning to DM 3.5 by running me through the Age of Worms campaign solo).
I thought that my disinterest in 4e was because he really isn't that great of a DM (he needs more practice, but drives me nutty enough that I don't want to bother; I started skipping game nights to skirmish). After running two different one-shots and playing in an LFR game tonight, I've decided that it's not just the fella's DMing style that is turning me off to 4e; it's 4e itself. There really is very little room for RPing in 4e. Need to convince the captain of the guard that you're not really the burglar? Just roll some dice a few times and see what happens. Blech! I thought that if I said "Booming Blade!" one more time tonight, my head would implode. Whatever happened to regular attacks? There's no wonder that a Barbarian wasn't originally statted for 4e, it seems like all 4e classes require at least this much fluff to their abilities for it to pass.
If I wanted to play something simple but effective in 4e, I could play a barbarian or a sorcerer. If I wanted something more complex, monks or wizards are great. Comic relief? Go dwarfen bard go! In 4e, everyone is equal and I don't like it that way. I liked the differences, I liked taking something that was considered underpowered and making it work.
Are there are some good things in 4e? Sure. I like the siimplicity of the line of sight, cover, and charge rules (straight line willl be needed, but I am going to allow charges through allies in my homegame). I like that you can AoO (or OA, whatever) around hard corners. I like the 5ft shift and then move or 5ft shift and charge possibilities. I like the diagonal counting rules just because it's so much more damned simple. I will likely write some of these things into my house rules.
I'll keep playing 4e with the fella until the rest of the group mutinies. In the meantime, I'll enjoy being a Half-Orc in my 3.5 campaign and start working on my own campaign (Savage Tide is calling my name.)

| | I like the new skills section. But, pretty much everything you've mentioned is what I feel. | | I just informed my group that I no longer want to play 4e. I gave it a shot but in the end, it's not what I want out of D&D. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

| | Wow, you really lasted a long time. May I ask what races/classes you tried out? I only found the Rogue appealing, and I was curious if any of the other classes were appealing to anyone else... | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | I was playing a Dragonborn Paladin. One of the things that hacked me off was that the Barbarian and Druid (two of my favorites) were not part of 4e from the beginning. I would have preferred to play either of those.
Oh well, with regards to D&D, I'm moving forward by moving backwards and doing it with a smile on my face. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!
