| I was wondering about what the environment is at your game table. The reason I bring this up is that all our players are all 30-40 years of age and can drink legally. Additionally, we have 3 persons who smoke. When the time had come up about bringing in a new player (which has been completed- see below) we tried to take into consideration the age and how they would react to this.Â
We start at 7pm and run till 11pm. When it starts getting about 10pm some of the folks start getting the "buzz". My current players are all cool with this considering 3 drink alcohol and the others may occasionally have a drink, but rarely do. I remember when we were younger we all would play and drink till we dropped and then would get up and head off to a club. Those days are over and we laugh about how we had that energy.Â
Now a-days after the game all are ready to head home with a few drinks in our system and clothes soaked in smoke. Sounds bad to some I am sure, but my gaming group is all fine with it. I guess thats all that matters.
We look at our Tuesday night game as our night out. With wives and kids most of us do not get the chance to head off to some bar and hang out so when it comes to Tuesday night it is sort of like getting your party hat on and ready to play a game we love and recall when we were young having some drinks and cigarettes.
I am curious how many others have a mix of persons who may drink, smoke, binge on food or do none of the above. My players bring their own foods and we usually have cups, forks and such ready to go. Pizza and chinese food are the prominent food choices.
We also play in my finished basement which is pretty big and has tons of books and minis. The new guy who we just got about a month ago is actually an electrician who was hooking up a dedicated circuit for my microwave. He came down into my basement and saw all the stuff. He was with his boss, but actually was overwhelmed with all the stuff. He started talking about how he used to play D & D (2nd edition) and how cool all my stuff was. Funny thing is the circuit which they installed was bad and he they had to return. However, this time he came without his boss and we started to talk at length about D & D. I offfered him an opportunity to come to a game and the rest is history. He told me when he left his boss was asking him why the hell he was so into all those silly little toys and such!!! | | Give me more MIND FLAYERS! | |

| | my group rotates to different houses. basements, kitchens and game rooms. some of the group has an alcohol drink once in a while. the rest has pop, sports drinks and/or ice water. as for food most of the time each member will stop on the way and grab something to snack on during the game. we have had a b-b-q, everyone brings their dead flesh and slaps it onto the grill. :) we have a great time. | | Thanks, realmaster. | | I have to laugh a little at how staid our group can be at times. Lately, our drink of choice is Earl Grey Tea! It's almost civilized. We play weekly from 7 to about 10 as we all have to work the next day. We're all in our 30's, and four of the five have kids at home, ranging in age from a couple of months to 7 years old. We usually play in one basement which has space for a large table but will occasionally play at someone else's house as schedules/family require. Usually one or two people will bring snacks which they share, and often bring their own pop or other drink. Once in a very rare while someone has an alcoholic drink, but as we all have to drive home when we're done, this doesn't happen very often. | |

| | I've been a part of several different groups. Two had smokers, none had drinkers (during the game). My take on this is that we're there to have fun, so whatever works for the group. Some of my play groups went through a campaign as if it were a timed delve at GenCon - ultra-efficient, everyone knew what to do, and they worked fast. Others were full of adult humour/off topic discussions and went at a more leisurely pace. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades. | |

| | We play at my place 90% of the time, and we don't smoke in our house - and none of my players are smokers...we usually do dinner, and one of the guys brings Timmy's, another brings dessert, etc...we have a good time, but I've always had a house rule against alchohol or drugs at the game table - just my way of playing... | | Shottglazz "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand; I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

| We used to play at my house, but we absorbed a few smokers, so we play at another player house. He's a bachelor to boot, so it's a bit less... Yeah. Generally, we have BYOB, and I usually pick up a cherry Icee on the way there. A few guys have beers (but always with a driver) and Mt. dew.
We used to play around the kitchen tabel, but with the latest game, I think we may have to move out to the living room. | | Official Delegate, Wizards of the Coast Against The Giants Called Shot: Huge Green Dragon Icons Called Shot: Gargantuan Prismatic Dragon

| I'm pretty much the only nonsmoker out of all of my friends, so that's always there and one of the reasons we'll never play at my house Occasionally we'll have a beer or 2, but nothing like the old days when we'd play for 12 hours or so until no one could drink any more. With the long drive home I have, I rarely imbibe anymore and if I do, it's at the beginning so there will be no ill affects come quitting time. | | Hey Woman, Hey Woman!! Listen here. | At my old FLGS back east there was always a fair amount of drinking after hours. Having a late night package store nearby was likely a good part of that.

Nice to see that you're concerned about your friends drinking & smoking there. It shows you respect the youth center.
I always seem to be the only one drinking at our table...and I'm the DM!
None of us smoke and all of my players drink tea (non of that Earl Grey stuff in a convenient tea bag....we use real tea leaves soaked in the kettle!
We play at my place in my room that I converted into an office/gaming room. It's kinda cramped in there though. I envy you guys that have the nice open basement-like gamerooms.

| All games at my house, have a finished basement with gaming tables, minis out the ying yang and a ton of books. I like the late 20s and plus crowd. Booze is usually involved and smoke if there are smokers. But beer is always involved. We gamed at 11am this morning and there was beer. We would eat chips and pizza while at it also.

That's all fine and dandy, but aren't you still living at your parents house and isn't that still your mothers basement? Where do you guys move her sewing machine?
A sound system built into the walls....that's awesome. I sure hope I can do a setup like that when I buy my own home. I doubt it though. Homes around here in my price range don't even have basements. In California, we're lucky if the bedroom is big enough to hold a bed. You should post a pic of your setup!

| One group is heavy with smokers (i'm an ex smoker, and wont stay inside a room with heavy smokers for fun), so we genrally play outside. Often a few beers are put to service, and the players rotate working out whats happening for dinner. Location of game also rotates around different houses, but 90% outside.
Other group is at my place, so smokers keep taking breaks, that gets pretty acholol fueled too. (and I remember playing/drinkingthen going out partying too - all before kids). I normally supply some salty munchies plus grab bag of other stuff from everyone.
At the shop where I GM, no drinking 'cept lollywater, but no smoking breaks or like either, just solid play for 3 hours. Food is sold by gameshop, though lots bring in outside takeaway.

| My group plays at one location all the time because the occupant has just about all the books, tons of minis and a huge battlemat.
No smokers at our table although we had a couple in the past. They were asked to smoke outside during break times. There is the occasional beer at our table but not much. I've found that alcohol and D&D leads to much merriment but very little actual D&D playing. Usually, I grab a Dunkin Donuts coffee or iced coffee on the way and I'm good to go. I also bring my Litpon Diet Green Tea. Not because I'm a health nut or anything, I'n just hooked on the stuff.

| Monday is for the Warriors of Gar, only four of us and it's usually cups of coffee and buscuits in my mates living room. Casual gamers. It's either Star Wars RPG, D&D RPG or a Doctor Who DVD.
Wednesday is for... actually no group name yet, it's a sort of overflow game with players from various groups. Pop and plenty of snack food, no smoking and alcohol is very rare - not that we're opposed to alcohol, we just don't drink it at the gaming table. I see this group as the hardcore gamers. It's a group of 8+ people in a small room around a regular dining table, a bit of a squash at times :) | | "No disintegrations? | Humans vrs Zombies is a widespread live action game. The humans have nerf weapons or marshmellows, when you shoot a zombie they are stunned for five minutes. If a Zombie manages to tag a human they become another zombie. It keeps on going on and on, untill there are only a few humans left. Currently we have about 500 people playing. There were originaly 5 zombies about a week ago, now it's up to 50. | I've gamed with a wide variety of gaming groups. We've gamed everywhere from the university campus to hot tubs (rolling dice is complicated and don't drop your book) to tops of the mountains.
Current gaming group environments:
1) No smokers, everyone but me drinks. We alternate locations between my place and one of the other gamers. Typically, at my place there's no alcohol, lots of snacks, and occasionally some really spiffy mapping (I hook my laptop up to my 42" LCD and project artwork/maps). We game on la-z-boy couches When I move I imagine things will change pretty dramatically since I'll most likely be leaving the state.
2) Half smoke, half drink. We game at one player's house consistently. Although he smokes, his wife doesn't so smokers have to take an outside smoke break periodically. Usually there's a couple of six packs of microbrew in the fridge although (usually) no one gets drunk. When gaming is foregone in favor of Lorwyn-block drafts more people show up and usually a couple of individuals get pretty loaded (which works for me since that usually increases my win rate ). Gaming setup is people flopped on couches, easy chairs, and the floor with dice rolled on coffee tables. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? | None of my group smokes (thank god!), but we all bring a bottle of wine (we're 35-40) and order some food. We're all professionals and wine enthusiasts, so sometimes the wine is really nice: in January we decanted a 1987 Chateauneuf-de-Pape. On good nights we play for four hours and one of my players loses the ability to add when he's drunk so he takes *forever* to total his damage. Good times...

| One group is beer, coffee, cigarettes and cigars, the other one is coffee, tea, soda, and lots of food.
I enjoy both!

| Our group had a new member this week: the 3-week old baby of one of my players. She was awesome and we played for four hours without a hitch. Most of the time she slept, but otherwise one of us (all experienced fathers) held her. No dice rolling yet, but this is the earliest D&D indoctrination that I've ever heard of!

My son had a plush D8 in his nursery crib at the hospital. Time from womb to dice: 3 hours.

Seriously, though, 3 weeks is awesome. | | Official Delegate, Wizards of the Coast Against The Giants Called Shot: Huge Green Dragon Icons Called Shot: Gargantuan Prismatic Dragon
