Maybe you should try getting BG1 + expansion (tales of the sword coast) before. In BG2 you already start at mid-level and the events follow BG1, so I'd begin by BG1.
(One more thing : the tales of the sword coast expansion for BG1 isn't necessary to complete the full story, so you can possibly skip it if you don't have that much time on your hands. I don't recomment that however, because it adds a few very interesting side quests.
But the BG2 expansion (throne of Bhaal) is necessary to end the story. And pretty cool too, even if railroady)

There is a compilation of all the BG games (BG1, tales of the sword coast expansion, BG2, throne of Bhaal expansion). I don't know how it's called in the USA, but it should be quite widely available.

The package Dordledum is talking about is a massive compilation of 17 games IIRC (I think it's a compilation of all dungeons and dragons interplay games, but I can't be sure. I've already seen it, but as I already had every game, I didn't buy...) If you find it, buy it !

And prepare to spend 5 years playing non-stop...

I really love Baldur's gate II Shadow of Ann and Throne of Bhaal..... Without any doubts is awesome game...

When I play I feel something like you Sean-Kan, my GM insticts increase and my RPG ideas grow up quick.

Sounds like good story line like BG's II estimulate GMs to make better work...

After I finish BG's II, I begin to play Temple of elemental evil...... but I was pretty disapointed because TOEE
is more hack and Slash adventures, and characters without background... Anyway is pretty fun....

Long time ago I had try to recreate similar BG's adventure, and I called "Child's of bane"... at last I face myself
making the same story line of BG's....

Im willing to create BG's Story in paper module if you like.... If can help count on me!!!

Thanks but as I didn't get much response to this, I decided to get myself a ready deluxe campaign setting/detailed town, Ptolus :)

I still might put up campaign development environment for community-created campaigns, though.

"You have flaming sword?  Cespenar has cream for that!"

Baldur's Gate was by far and away the best D&D game ever created.  It isn't even remotely close.  If they could get that creative team together to write and MMORPG with that kind of humor, game play and storyline, I would leave World of Warcraft in a heartbeat.
