What have you got against the King dude? All hail the King,...don't dis the King... Whopper run is fine by me.
I am leaving work so that I can be there for 5:00 pm.

That was my character speaking, Nico will be home shortly...

Ya, that story was kinda out there I have to admit looking back...I don't know what I was thinking...

Thanks Mike, I didn't make it back in time to do a revised background and I don't really have time to do one tonight.
So on the weekend I will flesh it out properly...of coarse I will honorably keep my...

2D6 Mastercraft Frogbane dagger cause thats what my comedy background got me!!! I do not contest...
In the spirt of Ugh...2 ranks comedy (Perform) makes sense...especially the way I play things out it seems right!

Rob, I was trying to imply that my Paladin lost some levels as well as his memory...I thought that could play into my future background history. So he would seem a little crazy cause he is out of sorts...

Chris, Thank God the Wedding with your sister is over! Whew...you may out rank me as a Cleric of Lathander...but I don't want no pansy skirt wearing cleric preaching to me what and what I can't do with his sister...Geesh.
You'll have to worry about what Felix the Second has in store for you...if he can remember that is....

Pounce goes the cat!!! Felix the Flounder strikes!
All heed the Drunken Paladin who performs comedy!!!

Looks like we're good to go for Whopper Wednesday. One big order.... 20.... 30 whoppers?

Don't forget to bring your trade fodder. Bob should be there with that Ice Devil for you Chris.

30 whoppers?  Only if each of you guys is looking at eating 5 each (OK, maybe only 4 each).  I am good for one tops, greasy fast (fat?) food clogs my arteries.  At least with pizza I can fool myself into saying there are veggies and tomato sauce.

As to trade stock, yes I am bringing in the rares for sure.  I might even load the entire trade box (case actually) in the trunk.

Back on topic of the campaign ...

How about these choices for our merry band's name:

The Seven Rays of the Sun
The Dawn-Bringers
The Company of Light
Lathander's Legion
The Company of the Dawn

and, in a more humourous vein:

The Magnificent Seven
3 Humans, 3 Elves, 1 Gnome Inc. (assuming the other Chris is an elf)

Cheers

I'd like whoppers for a change of pace. I might not know the other characters, but it would seem Jory's and my backgrounds share a common arch nemisis.

Well, my question is, who has stacked up their Diplomacy?

I know that I have a bit, and it sounds like Mico's paladin defers to Clerics of Lathandar, so I suspect I "outrank" him (unless he kills me first).

As to food, pizza is OK by me, or Whoppers.

More game notes.....

House Rules

Just off the top of my head here's a couple you should be aware of.

After confirming a critical hit the way I do it is you roll your normal damage and double that, not roll additional dice.

I don't use the size rules for weapons, there are no small longswords or large shortspears or whatever. The Medium category in the PHB applies to all weapons. Size does count, in the hands of a human a longsword is a one hander weapon but to the gnome it's a two handed sword.

If I think of any more I'll let you know.

What if I want a two-handed weapon?

Tomorrow night, it's on. I'm sure we can hook you up with a Whopper. Everyone must have a Whopper or else!

The only question, but not a question, slurpees?

Everyone come as early as possible so we can work out any last minute character issues and maximize our playing time.

A longsword, heavy mace, or battleaxe would be considered 2 handed weapons for the son of Dingle. A greataxe or greatclub just to large for you to ever use.

The reason I do it that way is to keep things simple. No having to keep track of weapon sizes. If I randomly roll treasure no getting a large greatsword that no one can use. It's just cleaner this way.

Well, everyone knows the quality of my role-playing is enhanced with a Slurpee (flavour modifier +2).  I'll have slurpee cups at the store for someone if they make a run, or if someone is picking up slurpees I'll take a Dr. Pepsi and reimburse you for it.Â

I was looking at the FR book today, and Dalelands Militia isn't as good as I thought.  I still need to settle on my feats.

Ice Troll,

Rein in those impulses.  I don't have my character sheet in front of me at the moment, but my Diplomacy is +4 or +5 in total.  I would not say you are anywhere near to "owning" everyone.

I'm sitting here looking over the FR book, and I found a feat I like "Twin Sword Style" from Sembria. Putting Lannister's birthplace here wouln't be stretching things too much. It gives at +2 defense bonus when wielding 2 swords. I'm not sure if it stacks with "dodge" or not though. Any comments? I suppose I could still be from Dalelands and picked up this style while plying the sailor trade.

I would have to look over the feat again but I believe it does stack. In order to pick up a regional feat you don't have to have been born there but you have to have spent a significant amount of time there. For our purposes devoting a fair amount of your backstory there.

Generally the leader is the guy with the charisma, but since Niko is crazy I think the Clearic would make a better choice.

Name wise I'm not sure the ones you listed are to religious for me.  The Manificent Seven isn't too bad but kinda cliche and the 3-3&1 name is too long.

Yo...preacher...don't go gettin' all sanctimonious like on us namin' the party.  I didn't sign on to become one of the "Glorious Light Bringers of Light's Holy Dawn Justice Avengers".  I'm in it for the money.  Well, that and the women.  Chicks dig guys with scars.  I'm in it for the chicks too.  .......although that avengin' part could be fun......

Just getting into Lannister's character there.  I'll follow whoever the group elects.  The Cleric is a fine choice.  I also like the leader spot, but I don't know about this Lannister character.  He's apt to lead us down to the red light district for some deep under cover adventuring........

And so the first session was recorded and no one died. Hoozah.

All in all a good session I think, hopefully everyone had fun. Next week we continue in the dungeon where we left off.

Stay tuned to this space for 2 extra XP bonuses that may get you to 2nd level.............................................................................................starting now!

All players that post the key highlights for their character for this session before Monday morning here will receive 100 bonus XP. I'll even throw in an extra 50 to who ever is the most entertaining and illicts the best comment, probably from Richard as he is the only non-player who comments here.

The second bonus will appear later........................ stay tuned!

How to decide, how to decide.

Two highlights for Gawain over the past three days of game time:

1)  Going all splat on the head of a wolf with a critical, while not carrying my shield or wearing armour.  My AC was roughly 12 (maybe 13) at the time.

2)  Holding the turn for a full 10 rounds on the skeletons guarding the dungeon entrance.  Gave the entire party time to get out of the pit and figure out a plan of action without being attacked.  I am sure something would have happened even with the pit there if we had simply let them come at us.

Lots of fun for me tonight.  The stirges were a pain, but my rolls for diplomacy helped with healing and general work.

All of that said, we need a Ranger or Druid to my mind.  I suspect we will not always be in the dungeon.

Also, we really need to work together to get some dungeoneering gear.  I think I need to buy a mule again, and this time I want to get to use it.

Cheers

I think that was a great D&D session. Awesome job pulling this group together Mike. Your attention to details and those little extras has made it memorable before it even started. I really enjoy playing rogues, and Lannister is going to be fun. Not because he is good at what he does, but just because he does it with casual rogue-ishness.

Highlights for me:

Magic Three Dragon Ante deck - I'm going to like playing with the deck. I love props at the D&D table. That deck even help me club a wolf.

Towel-heading the wolf. I like working with what I have at hand. If I could only play a D&D character like a Jackie Chan movie character. Maybe it didn't work so well, but what a great time to roll a nat 20.

Fumbling with my "lucky" staff. Those natural 1's can be fun too. "Gnome....pass me the staff...THE STAFF...NOWWWW!!!!!!"

Interaction between characters, especially if there is just enough of personnal differences to create that jesting banter "you know, 5 sp is 30 pints of beer, half a share for the gnome, and mr. cleric will probably just drink goats milk here..."; "..pssttt Gawain, do you have an extra shirt, our friend here looks like he might be getting chilly."; "..oh come on, he's dead. He doesn't need those boots." and my favourite "..hey Cutter, which part of the wolf is Bacon?"

....and so Lannister Lazenby, famous card player, scoundrel and all around sarcastic slacker boldly heads back to the (stirge free) tavern........

It was a great session thanks again to Scott for hosting and Mike for running it.

Highlights for Cutter:

doing 26 damage to a stirge and only getting hit by them once.  and then after traveling back to town and finding out about the bounty going back into the woods to collect the stirge bodies and not dying.

Not dying or taking any damage from attacks all night.

Not dying despite missing on all attacks after the stirge encounter.

Throwing a grappling hook at a skeleton and using the rope to cross the pit even if I did fall into it first.

Lowlights:

Missing with all my attacks after the stirge encounter I obviously need new dice.

Well, I finally finished the background that I had been working on. I tried something different, whether it worked or not I'm not sure. It did end up significantly longer than I had planned/hoped, but that's the benefit of not actually playing. People can read it or not as they choose.

Laryn Ravensbrow

1350 D.R. - Year of the Morningstar

Galen climbed out of bed full of nervous excitement. Today was the day he had been alternately dreading would arrive, and wishing would arrive tomorrow. Today he would marry his betrothed, Adelia Ravenswing, an apprentice wizardess under the tutelage of Thormud Sparkstaff.

Getting out of bed and examining himself in the mirror, Galen smiled to himself as he recalled the first time he had seen Adelia.

Galen was a merchant specializing in components for magical spells, some rare, others not so rare. He had arrived in Velprintalar the night before with a load of spell components collected from the Yuirwood and thought his prospects for a good profit were high. He set up his stall in the Velprintalar marketplace, and before long a tall woman with jetblack hair and gray eyes the colour of a stormy winter sky approached his stall and introduced herself as Adelia, an apprentice wizard, and began perusing his goods. In a short time, Adelia finished browsing the spell components and paid for her selections. Watching her go, Galen was surprised to find himself wishing she had taken longer to make her purchases and that he would see her again.

Galen shrugged his shoulders in the mirror. Little did he know that at their first meeting a year ago that he had been caught hook, line, and sinker by the serious gaze of the young apprentice wizard. Oh well, Galen thought to himself, time to get ready for the ceremony later that day.

1352 D.R. - Year of the Dragon

A storm had blown in off Sea of Fallen Stars, and Galen and Adelia were seated in their cozy living room in the small home in Velprintalar where they lived. Adelia had recently finished her apprenticeship with Thormud on Shieldmeet, and she and her husband were deciding what they were going to do next. As a travelling merchant Galen had seldom spent this much time in one place at a time. He had settled down after his marriage and had opened a tavern named the Ravenswing after his wife with the profits he had made as a seller of spell components. While being a tavernkeeper suited him well, he was definitely ready for a change of scenery and Adelia, having never been outside of Velprintalar had an urge to see a bit of the world as well. That night the two decided that they would sell the inn, take ship across the Sea of Fallen Stars to see where the future might take them.

A tenday later, a full moon shone down turning the sea into a sheet of silver as Adelia and Galen stood on the deck of the merchant ship "Wanderer", sailing from Velprintalar to Procampur. Upon arriving in Procampur they purchased some supplies and horses and rode north along the road towards the Earthpeak Mountains. In the foothills of the Earthpeak Mountains the pair of travelers came upon the village of Giant's Hollow, so named because of a peculiar outcropping of rock that looked remarkably like a giant standing tall with a club resting upon its right shoulder. Upon investigating the village, the two decided it would make a decent place to call home for the time being. There was some farming in the hills, and the hunting was good as well. The locals warned them that there was a chance of orc raids, but the two travellers weren't too concerned about such things. Galen knew how to handle a sword, and Adelia had her magic to protect herself. It was Adelia's magic skills that truly earned them their place in the village. She was able to use her herbalism and alchemy skills to treat a variety of the common bumps, bruises, aches, and pains that come up in rural life.

1353 D.R. - Year of the Arch

Galen heard a whistling sound and threw himself down to the ground just in time as the orkish arrow struck the tree he had been leaning against with a resounding THUNK! Galen sprang back to his feet, to engage the orks he knew would be charging behind the volley of arrows. It was a typical fall raiding party as the orks sought to acquire some comfort items before the first winter snows which would be coming soon to the mountain area. Galen sidestepped the powerful but predictable swing of the ork's warclub and responded with slash of his shortsword, cutting the orc in the arm. A volley of sparkling energy bolts curved around Galen, one striking the orc he battled, dropping it, and two others hitting the ork behind it. Galen glanced back and smiled appreciatively at his wife who stood in the gateway of the village walls. The citizens of Giant's Hollow had expanded the city defenses to combat the increasing raids the last couple of years, and had constructed a funnel like approach to the main gate. A signal to the archers a top the wall provided a covering volley of arrows behind which the militia of Giant's Hollow was able to retreat into the city walls. A few steps behind them the orks charged after, but were brought to an abrupt halt by a crackling bolt of lightning that sprang from the fingers of Adelia as the orks were forced into the narrow approach. Several of the orks were burned, while others had comical expressions on their faces as the electricity caused their hair to stand straight up before stopping their hearts. The remaining orks howled in futility as they ran away to fight another day. The archers on the wall fired a few archers to chase them on their way, and then the townspeople let out a cheer as the first snow began falling from the overcast sky. They knew they were safe for another winter, and each year they grew more and more confident in defending their home.

1355 D.R. 13th Tarsakh - Year of the Harp

A flash of lightning illuminated the night sky, showing the trees bent almost horizontal from the fierce winds as Galen paced nervously around the kitchen. He winced at the occasional shrieks from the bedroom, where the midwife helped Adelia through what to Galen seemed like a horrible idea. Suddenly there was a new voice, screaming indignantly at its sudden arrival into the world. Another flash of lightning was followed almost instantaneously by a rolling peal of thunder, and Galen fancied that Mother Nature herself was welcoming his son into the world. A few moments later, the midwife brought him his first child, a son, wrapped tightly in a cloth blanket. Galen looked into the gray eyes, so like his mothers, and smiled. "Your wife is fine," the midwife informed him, pulling Galen out of his reverie. Galen nodded and carried the child into the bedroom so the new family could spend their first moment together.

1358 D.R. - Year of Shadows

3 year old Laryn gazed out of the window in the family in rapt attention as rain pattered against the roof and splashed into merry puddles. A bolt of lightning made Laryn squeal in excitement as it lit up the sky, followed by a rumble of thunder. The storms had been particularly fierce this year, and that suited young Laryn quite well. While some children feared the bright lightning and rumbling thunder, Laryn was entranced by the elements as they raged outside of his sturdy home. Laryn heard footsteps behind and turned to see his father enter the room. "Bed time son," his father said as he came over and affectionately ruffled Laryn's dark hair. Laryn sighed at having to go to bed, but with one last longing glance out the window at the storm and headed upstairs to say goodnight to his mother. Galen remained downstairs for another moment looking out at the storm, unable to shake off a feeling of uneasiness. Rumors had reached Giant's Hollow from traders indicating that the Gods themselves were walking the realms and chaos followed in their wake. Galen shook his head. "I can't believe I'm falling for those rumors, " he thought to himself. "Gods walking on Faerun, probably the result of someone's drink addled dreams," he muttered as he turned to follow his son upstairs.

1361 D.R. - The Year of Maidens

Laryn was exploring a glade near the edge the waterfall at the edge of town when he heard a quiet sound from above. Looking up, Laryn spotted a small kitten clinging to the edge of a high branch. The kitten looked down at Laryn and meowed again. Looking around, Laryn didn't see any grown-ups around, so being six years old and convinced of his own omnipotence (like many young children) Laryn resolved to rescue the stranded kitten himself. He managed to climb the tree without too much difficulty, but once he began to inch out along the branch upon which the kitten sat, a problem arose. It wasn't a very thick branch, and while it had no trouble supporting the weight of a small kitten, the weight of a small boy was somewhat more problematic. With a sharp cracking sound the branch gave way, and both boy and kitten tumbled down. Laryn managed to grab the frightened kitten, getting clawed for his trouble, but the two were still falling at an alarming rate. Laryn closed his eyes, figuring that it was better not to see the ground approaching, but he suddenly felt himself slowing. As Laryn landed gently he opened his eyes and glanced around. For a second he thought he saw a ghostly figure of a man with a tall pointy hat, gnarled wooden staff, and long white beard, but then the image faded and Laryn and the kitten were alone. Laryn put the kitten down on the ground, and the kitten sat down and looked at him. Laryn petted the kitten, and started back towards home, since it was getting late. The kitten looked around, meowed, and trotted along behind Laryn.

1366 D.R. - The Year of the Staff

Laryn had returned to the glade by the waterfall several times over the past few years since his escapade with the cat, but he had never again encountered anything out of the ordinary after that initial glimpse of the ghostly wizard. Thinking of his cat, Laryn glanced off to the side where Shadow, named for his habit of following Laryn everywhere like his own shadow, was chasing butterflies. The day was a bit on the chilly side, it hadn't been all that long since there was snow on the ground, and the mists from the waterfall rolled in along the ground amongst the trees in the glade creating an eerie atmosphere. Looking back towards the center of the glade, Laryn gave a start as he again saw the ghostly outline of the wizard. The ghost drifted closer, and as it approached Laryn found that he was surprised to discover that he wasn't afraid of the spectre. When the ghost had approached within a few paces of him, Laryn heard a quiet voice in his head. "You can see me, can't you boy?" the voice whispered. Laryn was startled to hear the voice since as far as he could tell he and the ghost were the only ones around. Laryn whirled around to see if there was anyone else in the glade, and the voice inside his head chuckled kindly. "Fear not, boy, we are quite along here." Laryn looked at the ghost in wide eyed wonder. "How are doing that," he asked half in curiosity, half in apprehension. "I was once a wizard," the spectre answered in a grave voice, "and not all of my powers vanished with my body." "What happened to you?" Laryn enquired, now much more curioius than worried. The old wizard proceeded to tell Laryn of some of his exploits, including his final battle with a large green dragon in the forest surrounding the current Giant's Hollow. "Unfortunately, the dragon inflicted mortal wounds before I was able to destroy," the wizard said with a far away look in his eyes. "Yet, while my body perished, some part of me stayed in this glade, protecting the area and its inhabitants, as I had in life." "Protecting? You mean it was you that saved me and Shadow that day?" "Indeed, it was one of my spells that slowed your descent," answered the ghost. Laryn mulled that over for a bit before thanking the wizard, and when the wizard replied, Laryn thought he detected a smile in the voice, if voices can smile. "How do you know I was saving you and not the cat?" Laryn looked at the wizard and grinned, glancing around for Shadow, who, having decided that there was no danger in the situation, had gone back to chasing butterflies.

1368 D.R. - The Year of the Banner

"C'mon guys, hurry up, " Laryn exclaimed to his two friends, Erica and Darius. Laryn had been visiting the old man in the glade off and on since their first meeting two years ago, and he had learned a lot. The old man had even taught Laryn a few magic tricks, and today Laryn was going to use those tricks for a bit of fun. When the three children began to get close to the glade, Laryn began retelling the story of the old man and his battle with the green dragon. When they entered the glade, Laryn attempted to use his magic to conjure a shadowy human shape that glowed with a faint bit of light that began to approach the three children. As it approached it began to make a low moaning sound that increased in volume as the glowing apparition approached. Erica and Darius saw the ghostly outline and yelped in fright, but at their cry Laryn couldn't contain himself and burst out in laughter. The glowing apparition and the moaning sound vanished, and Erica and Darius knew they'd been tricked. Frowning, Erica reached over to the giggling Laryn and pouched him in the shoulder, "Jerk," she said. "Oh c'mon," Laryn said as he caught his breath, "that was a great trick." Erica offered a small grin. "Yeah, it was, but you're still a jerk," she said sticking her tongue out at Laryn. Through the exchange, Darius had been silent, and when the other two looked to see what had his attention, they saw him staring in wide-eyed astonishment at the ghostly figure of Gareth, the spectral wizard.

1370 D.R. - The Year of the Tankard

*Thunk* Laryn's sword was deflected by Darius's shield, as the two performed their daily weapon's practice. Even though the wilderness surrounding Giant's Hollow wasn't as dangerous as it had been in the past, upon turning 16, all youth spent 2 years practicing with staff, spear, and bow against the time when the orcs would return and they would be forced to defend themselves and their families. Laryn was a competent warrior, his natural dexterity adding to a strength and fitness born of spending a lot of time wandering around the forests on the edge of Giant's Hollow during his youth. The veteran militiaman in charge of the exercise blew his whistle, signalling the end of the practice. Laryn and Darius returned their equipment to the shed where they were joined by Erica as the three headed off to the messhall for something to eat before they were free for the afternoon. Their days had developed a comfortable sense of routine since they had met Gareth and joined the militia reserves. Mornings were devoted to martial practice, whether with weapons or tactics, and afternoons were spent with the old wizard. Laryn's parents (mostly his mother) had been happy to see that he had acquired some magical aptitude, although his haphazard acquisition of abilities puzzled his studious mother.

1372 D.R. - The Year of Wild Magic

Cries of battle and shrieks of pain filled the air. The orcs had come again, and they had come in numbers not seen in the memories of any living member of Giant's Hollow. The orcs had breached the outer wall, and there was fighting in the streets. The reserves had been called up, including Laryn and his friends. Laryn and Darius were battling a group of orcs along with some other townsmen. Seeing an opportunity, Laryn struck an orc across the back of its unprotected skull with his oaken staff and whirled around to see Darius finishing off a foe, but another orc reared back with its massive battleaxe, about to brain his childhood friend. Laryn pointed a behind Darius and tried to shout a warning, but before he could a crackling sphere of lightning seemed to appear in front of his hand, and streak towards the orc, striking it in the chest and causing its hair to dance on end. Laryn was shocked, and before he could figure out why Darius was yelling and pointing at him, he felt a burst of pain as an orc clubbed him int the end and he was enveloped by darkness.

Laryn awoke some time later, aware of a throbbing in his head, as he opened his eyes to see his parents and Darius sitting around him. It took Laryn a moment to realize he was in his own bed in his parents house. Darius grinned as he saw his friend awake. "Good thing you're so hard-headed," he said, "otherwise that orc's club woulda taken you out." Grinning weakly, Laryn glanced around and in a raspy voice asked, "Where's Erica?" His parents and friend stopped smiling and exchanged solemn glances. "We don't know, " Adelia said. Laryn's face went ashen. "She's not dead is she!?! She can't be dead." Galen sighed. "No one knows. Her body wasn't among the dead, but we can't find here anywhere." Galen closed his eyes and wondered what could have happened to Erica.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shortly after the orc raid had been repulsed, Laryn decided that it was time for him to leave Giant's Hollow. He said goodbye to his parents, Darius, and of course Gareth. He set out with his pack, and Shadow of course, determined to learn more about himself, and hopefully to discover what had happened to Erica.

Nice background story there Richard. Does this mean you want to play the RPG as well? Is Laryn a fighter?
