| Hello everyone,
I have started a DDM league at Imagine Games and Hobbies, 246 McDermot
in the Exchange District. It will run three rounds every Sunday,
in perpetuity. There is a 1 booster buy-in plus a $6 entry
fee. Registration begins at noon, and the games begin at
1PM. Since Pedro at Imagine has agreed to donate the playing
space and give us a 10% discount on boosters, all entry fees will go
back to the players. For every three entrants, one booster will
be drafted among the players. All remaining monies will be put
into a monthly prize for the player with the most wins.
In a nutshell, all you do is buy a booster from Imagine and build the
best 200 point warband that you can. Players will be seeded based
on (1st) total points in warband, (2nd) highest commander rating and
(3rd) highest point value piece. We are using a ladder format
where in each round, each player plays the player with the same score
that is closest on the ladder (1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6 etc.) At
the end of the day, you draft minis to "level up" your warband, which
means that next time you play, you can use not only your original
booster but the pieces that you draft! Of course, the more you
play the better your warbands will be, but to keep it competetive,
players will be competing against those in their starting group for
boosters. That means that if 6 people enter, two boosters will be
drafted, the first one will be amongst the 1st through 3rd seeds and
the second will be drafted amongs the 4th through 6th seeds.
That's right, 3 players=1 booster, 6 players=2 boosters, 9 players =3
boosters etc.
Our inaugural tournament was held last Sunday and was a success.
There were four entrants plus a fifth who preregistered for next
week. I had 2 wins and won on tiebreaks (tiebreaks are aggregate
score), scooping up an Owlbear Rager as my reward!!! $5.75 went
into the September grand prize. It's not too late for some of you
hot shots (you know who you are) to enter and make a big splash.
If there are any questions, please e-mail me at nervousxian23@hotmail.com.
peace,
Jeff

| The Sept 16 edition of the ladder league had four entrants. Devastation was promised and devastation was delivered by the two newcomers, Matt and Raymond. Seeded 5th and 6th respectively, they climbed to the top two spots on the ladder.
The first round saw me defeat Matt with the same warband and map that got me the rare last week.
Jeff's Warband: Shuluth (59pts, c5) Blood Ghost Berserker (37pts) Tiefling Blademaster (27pts, c3) Orc Mauler (26pts) Wood Elf Ranger (23pts) Quaggoth Slave (10pts) Arcanix Guard (9pts) Hunting cougar (9pts)
200pts, 8 activations, Hailstorm Tower
Matt's Warband: Vlaakith, Lich Queen (79 pts, c4) Dragonmark Heir of Deneith (34) Medium Copper Dragon (32) Doomguard (26, c1) Skeletal Reaper (21) Greenspawn Sneak (6)
198 points, 6 activations, Frostfell Rift sitting this one out was a Mercykiller (17) and an Acheron Goblin (7)
Tom improved his warband with his pick from last week, but his warband still fell to the toughest piece in the tournament, a Pit Fiend.
Tom's Warband: Brass Samurai (56, c4) Arcane Ballista (48) Combat Medic (28) Orc Wizard (24) Goblin Blackblade (12) Derro (11) Frost Dwarf (11) Arcanix Guard (9)
199 points, 8 activations, Frostfell Rift
Raymond's warband: Pit Fiend (105, c4) Dragonmark Heir of Deneith (34) Medium Copper Dragon (32) Orc Wizard (24)
195 points, 4 activations, Frostfell Rift rounding out the reserves for Raymond were a Free League Ranger (25, c2), Blood of Vol Cultist (18), Hero of Valhalla (11), and a Kobold Monk (6)
In the second round, Tom defeated Matt by the narrow margin of a Greenspawn Sneak. Raymond picked up his second win handily, eliminating all but my Hunting Cougar, and catapulting himself to the top of the ladder.
Tom got his revenge against Shuluth in the third round when his Brass Samurai diced my illithid commander like calamari. The game was over quickly, and with two wins it was still possible for Tom to come in first place, provided that Matt could defeat Raymond by 100 or so points. Matt did win and jump into first place, but the victory was by a mere 4 points, which gave Raymond the win on tiebreaks.
Raymond selected War Drums as his flavor of booster and lo and behold, another Shuluth, Archvillain was the rare Booster draft: 1 (Raymond) Shuluth, Archvillain (59, c5) 2 (Tom) Goblin Blackblade (12) 3 (Matt) Goblin Underboss (28, c3) 4 (Jeff) Mephling Pyromancer (38) 5 (Jeff) Fiendish Girallon (36) 6 (Matt) Hobgoblin Archer (11) 7 (Tom) Horde Zombie (14) 8 (Raymond) Shieldwall Soldier (7)
Raymond showed a little hesitation in selecting Shuluth, but decided that the archvillain and the Pit Fiend would look good together. Tom selected the Blackblade to make his warband an even 200 points next time, then found himself only one more zombie away from building a horde (you can never have too many zombies in that horde). Matt, with his new commander and archer probably had the best picks as far as creating synergy with his warband goes. I was rather stunned to find two decent uncommons still available when it came around to my picks and snapped them up immediately.
There was $6.75 left over after the booster draft, which brings the monthly prize fund up to $12.50. With two more sessions to go, and only three wins for the co-leaders, it's still anyone's game.
Will Vlaakith the Lich Queen continue her momentum now that she's at the top of the ladder? Will the Pit Fiend manage to break a sweat? How many enemies will the Arcane Ballista manage to impale? Will Shuluth come face to face with his (equally) evil twin? Will the bone crushing Fire Giant Forgepriest re-assert himself? Will the Ogre War Hulk return and wreak a whirlwind of havoc? What new warbands will arrive on the scene? Come down to Imagine next Sunday and find out!
p.s. I almost forgot, here is what the Ladder looks like:
1 Matt 2 Raymond 3 Tom 4 Jeff 5 Kevin 6 Graham
And here is what the race for the monthly prize looks like:
1 Jeff 3 wins, +107 2 Tom 3 wins, +45 3 Kevin 2 wins, +143 4 Raymond 2 wins, +133 5 Matt 1 win, -51 6 Graham 0 wins, -154 | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------

| The third episode of the Imagine DDM League saw Kevin return from a hiatus with the same dominant warband that he played last time. Kevin defeated all of his opponents by a large margin to become the first 3-0 winner of the league.
Kevin's Warband: Fire Giant Forgepriest (84) Elf Warmage (42) Red Hand War Sorceror (34, c3) Harmonium Guard (27, c3) Soldier of Bytopia (12) 199 points, 5 activations, Dragon Graveyard
In the first round Kevin faced my redesigned warband. I put both of my rare minis in this time, but it was still no match for all of his automatic damage.
Jeff's Warband: Shuluth, Archvillain (59, c5) Mephling Pyromancer (38) Blood Ghost Berserker (37) Owlbear Rager (34) Goblin Blackblade (12) Quaggoth Slave (10) Arcanix Guard (9) 199 points, 7 activations, Field of Ruin
In the second round, Kevin was up against Tom's victorious warband and beat him handily as well.
Tom's Warband: Brass Samurai (56, c4) Arcane Ballista (48) Combat Medic (28) Orc Wizard (24) Goblin Blackblade (12) Goblin Blackblade (12) Frost Dwarf (11) Arcanix Guard (9) 200 points, 8 activations, Frostfell Rift
The third round was the test for Kevin, as he faced last week's winner Raymond.
Raymond's warband: Pit Fiend (105, c4) Dragonmark Heir of Deneith (34) Medium Copper Dragon (32) Orc Wizard (24) Kobold Monk (5) 200 points, 5 activations, Dragon Shrine
Kevin won his three games by an aggregate of 596 points and is undefeated in five league games. He selected a War Drums booster for the draft.
1 (Kevin) Warbound Impaler (52) 2 (Tom) Combat Medic (28) 3 (Raymond) Lion of Talisid (51, c3) 4 (Jeff) Sacred Watcher (18) 5 (Jeff) Troglodyte Thug (11) 6 (Raymond) Howling Orc (15) 7 (Tom) Halfling Slinger (12) 8 (Kevin) Skeletal Legionnaire (4)
After Kevin plucked the rare, Tom picked his second Combat Medic in order to keep it out of our hands, then Raymond grabbed a decent commander with a few healing spells. I picked the incorporeal Sacred Watcher which I felt that point for point was probably the toughest piece in the booster, and the Troglodyte Thug is quite useful for nerfing living opponents with the stench ability. I thought Raymond might have chosen the Skeletal Legionnaire with his next selection to build get phalanx fighter synergy and more activations, but he went with the Howling Orc. Tom took the 12 point Halfling Slinger for an easy substitution in his build, leaving the skeleton for Kevin.
With four players in attendance, the September prize fund climbed to $19.25.
Ladder Standings 1 Kevin 2 Matt 3 Tom 4 Raymond 5 Jeff 6 Graham
September Standings 1 Kevin 5-0, +662 2 Tom 5-4, +156 3 Raymond, 3-3 -55 4 Jeff 3-5, -675 5 Matt 1-2, +4 6 Graham 0-3, -154
Next week will be the final Sunday in September. The monthly prize is still very much up for grabs. Will Kevin continues his undefeated ways, or will Tom's consistent attendance propel him to the win? Can Raymond or I come from behind to take it all, or will we be left in the dust? Come to Imagine next week to find out!
P.S. I have a few changes in mind for October, specifically to make the actual ladder standings more important. Stay tuned for an update.
Also, Pedro tells me that Night Below boosters are on order, so we'll have some more variety shortly. | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------

I know. It's quite deadly. Personally I'm drafting to deal with it, but I think I'll need some instant death from the newer sets.

| Here is more on the changes I have planned for October. In order to make the ladder more relevant, basically I'm thinking of scrapping the monthly prize and instituting a bonus draft whenever the excess entry fees are enough for a booster. The main reason I'm not already doing this is because I've advertised a monthly prize from the start and it would be unfair to change it before at least one monthly prize has been awarded.
The bonus draft would take place on the day that the excess fees are collected and the booster would be drafted between the first through eighth place participants on the ladder. I'd like to do this for two reasons... firstly because it is technically possible to have no extra entry fees during a month, so it would be possible to have no monthly prize. Secondly, I believe it would encourage more participation because it is a prize that really only takes one game to win, (take Matt's performance in the second week for example.) As opposed to players not showing up because they feel out of contention, this may encourage them to fight for and defend their spot on the ladder.
If a player is not present to draft his mini, I will select it for him based on the following criteria: 1)draft the rare mini or, 2)if there is no rare mini available, draft the highest point value uncommon mini available or, 3)if there are no uncommon minis available, draft the highest point value common mini.

I think that for this format it's important that the lower rungs of the ladder get some of the rares too. How else are they going to compete if all of the rares go to the top of the ladder?

| Three players turned out for the final installment of the September DDM league. A new player, Norm joined Tom and I and we played a round robin. Norm selected a Night Below booster for his roster and here's what he got.
Norm's Roster: Brass Golem (67 pts) Shadowbane Inquisitor (36) Assassin (29) Trained Carrion Crawler (28) Hobgoblin Marshal (22, c1) Carnage Demon (10) Deep Legionnaire (7) 199 points, 7 activations, Broken Demongate Sitting on the sidelines was a Guard of Mithral Hall (19)
Norms warband had a lot of built in synergy with two sneak attackers, but he was unfamiliar with the new set and lost a close game to Tom in the first round. Tom had the same warband as last week, but unfortunately he had switched maps, not realizing that the smoke terrain on Evermelt was a great hindrance to his Arcane Ballista.
Tom's Warband: Brass Samurai (56, c4) Arcane Ballista (48) Combat Medic (28) Orc Wizard (24) Goblin Blackblade (12) Goblin Blackblade (12) Frost Dwarf (11) Arcanix Guard (9) 200 points, 8 activations, Evermelt
In the second round I played Tom and my revamped warband was successful, the main difference maker being my drafts from last week.
Jeff's Warband: Shuluth, Archvillain (59, c5) Blood Ghost Berserker (37) Fiendish Girallon (36) Tiefling Blademaster (27, c3) Sacred Watcher (18) Troglodyte Thug (11) Quaggoth Slave (10) 198 points, 7 activations, Hailstorm Tower
In the third round I played Norm on his map and won decisively.
I selected a booster of Night Below for this week's draft and here's what came up:
1 (Jeff) Berserk Flesh Golem (47) 2 (Tom) Large Chaos Beast (26) 3 (Norm) Champion of Dol Dorn (42) 4 (Norm) Ice Mephit (13) 5 (Tom) Darkmantle (6) 6 (Jeff) Greyhawk City Militia Sargeant (13, c3) 7 (Jeff) Bluespawn Ambusher (15) 8 (Tom) Carnage Demon (10)
Ladder Standings: 1 Jeff 2 Kevin 3 Matt 4 Tom 5 Raymond 6 Graham 7 Norm
Tom won the monthly prize of $19.00 and generously donated it to all of the month's participants in the form of a bonus draft of Night Below minis (as previously outlined). As I was in first place at the end of the day, I selected first and chose for absent players by proxy.
Bonus draft: 1 (Jeff) Noble Salamander (53 pts) 2 (Kevin by proxy) Greater Barghest (35) 3 (Matt by Proxy) Wild Mage (29) 4 (Tom) Deep Legionnaire (7) 5 (Raymond by proxy) Kuo-Toa Whip (25, c2) 6 (Graham by proxy) Gnoll Claw Fighter (24) 7 (Norm) Delver Sergeant (15, c3) 8 (Norm) Kuo-Toa Hunter (9)
The big winner in the bonus draft was probably Matt, as the Wild Mage has the potential for tremendous synergy with Vlaakith the Lich Queen's offensive spells. I shudder to think of the possibility of taking a double-damage disintegrate spell.
Beginning next week we will begin playing not for for a bonus booster draft. Thanks to Pedro and Wendy for their support, and I hope to see you all next Sunday! | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------

| The October 7 session saw Kevin, Jeff, Tom and Norm fight it out for the top spot on the ladder.
Kevin's Warband:
Fire Giant Forgepriest (84)
Elf Warmage (42)
Red Hand War Sorceror (34, c3)
Harmonium Guard (27, c3)
Soldier of Bytopia (12)
199 points, 5 activations, Dragon Graveyard
Tom's Warband:
Brass Samurai (56, c4)
Arcane Ballista (48)
Combat Medic (28)
Orc Wizard (24)
Goblin Blackblade (12)
Goblin Blackblade (12)
Frost Dwarf (11)
Arcanix Guard (9)
200 points, 8 activations, Tomb of Queen Peregrine
Norm's Roster:
Brass Golem (67)
Shadowbane Inquisitor (36)
Assassin (29)
Hobgoblin Marshal (22, c1)
Ice Mephit (13)
Delver Sargeant (15, c3)
Carnage Demon (10)
Deep Legionnaire (7)
199 points, 8 activations, Dragon Shrine
Jeff's Warband:
Shuluth, Archvillain (59, c5)
Berserk Flesh Golem (47)
Blood Ghost Berserker (37)
Sacred Watcher (18)
Troglodyte Thug (11)
Quaggoth Slave (10)
Hunting Cougar (9)
Arcanix Guard (7)
200 points, 8 activations, Hailstorm Tower
Round
1 saw the first defeat of Kevin's warband, which had remained
undefeated and unchanged since the first day of the league. Kevin lost
to Jeff when he split up his warband getting into hailstorm tower and
found himself out activated. A critical hit and a second hit from my
Blood Ghost Berserker routed his Forgepriest, and then he found his
spellcasters faced with a spell-immune Flesh Golem. Tom handily
defeated Norm as well.
In the second round, Tom had difficulty
getting a decent shot off with his Arcane Ballista against me on his
map and rolled a disatrous series of 1's and 2's with his Brass Samurai
against my berserk Flesh Golem at a critical junction. The game was
pretty much over once I eliminated his spellcasting support and he was
left with a lone, powerless Ballista. The other game of the round saw
Kevin defeat Norm in a close battle. Norm gave himself a chance at
taking out the Fire Giant Forgepriest with a death attack from the
Assassin, but the Giant made his saving throw and started cleaving the
opposition.
The third round gave Norm a chance to play spoiler
against me, but once again, Hailstorm Tower confounded my opponent and
he split his warband in two. My Blood Ghost Berserker survived a
powerful charge from his Brass Golem and teamed with my Berserk Flesh
Golem to finish it off. Once his heavy hitting construct was
eliminated, my lead in points allowed me to take more risks with
Shuluth and get himinto the action. Of course, eliminating the Assassin
with a critical hit from the Blood Ghost Berserker didn't hurt. Tom
defeated Kevin after Kevin made an error during set-up, giving the
Ballista a devastating shot with it's electricity sphere which routed
his Elf Warmage off the board.
I came in first place for the second straight week and chose to draft a Night Below booster.
1 (Jeff) Dracotaur Rager (44)
2 (Tom) Warpriest of Vandria (40, c4)
3 (Kevin) Verdant Reaver (34)
4 (Norm) Kuo-Toa Whip (25, c2)
5 (Norm) Bluespawn Ambusher (15)
6 (Kevin) Grehawk City Militia Sergeant (13, c3)
7 (Tom) Prisoner (5)
8 (Jeff) Kobold Trapmaker (10)
Tom
picking the Warpriest of Vandria can be considered somewhat of a coup,
as it's commander effect grants sidestep to followers with ranged
attacks such as the Arcane Ballista (shudders). He said he took the
Prisoner over the Kobold Trapmaker because he wanted to keep it out of
my hands. Norm became the first player to get both a Kuo-Toa Hunter and
Whip on his roster. Kevin chose the Verdant Reaver for the future
possibility of getting a commander that would be good with plant
creatures, and he also chose a fairly decent secondary commander.
Only Tom managed to move up the ladder.
Standings:
1 Jeff
2 Tom
3 Kevin
4 Matt
5 Raymond
6 Graham
7 Norm
There
was a $6.25 surplus after we were done, which means that if we take in
two "extra" entry fees next week, we will see another bonus draft.
Thanks again to Pedro and Wendy for hosting, and make sure you come out
and fight for the top spot on the ladder! | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------

| Hey guys I am thinking of coming out and trying out your league for a session (if I can find the time). My problem is that I wouldn't be able to make Saturday until about 1:30pm. Would I be at a severe disadvantage joining into the league at this time, especially if I can't make all the sessions? You guys have a larger pool of mini's to draw your warbands from, I would be restricted to just my starting booster

Thanks in advance for your replies Hi there peanut69, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Late joiners are welcome in the league, and it's fine if you show up late or leave early. One of the reasons that I take all byes as the organizer is so that I can always fit people in and they can play as many games as they can when they show up. We like to start at 1PM on Sundays, but even if you can't make it until the second round we value your participation. You can still get a 2-0 score and draft a decent mini, possibly even a rare.
The one thing we haven't seen yet in this league is the participation
of six or more players in one session, which is really the key element
in helping late starters become competetive. I run a similar, yet much
larger league at Ziggy's Comics on Friday nights in which we have seen
no fewer than six players every night. We draft at least two boosters,
the first one among those that start at the top of the ladder, and the
second among those that start at the bottom of the ladder. This way,
you don't need to get a perfect score to win a good prize, you just
need to do a little better than those that are close to you on the
ladder at the start of the day. We've had three players go 2-1 and win
a rare, and one player winning a rare with a score of 1-2!! As soon as
we start getting six or more players on Sundays, we'll see the lower
ranked players draft rares onto their rosters and make a charge for the
top spots.
As far as building through the draft goes, most often the player that
wins the rare will not be able to build an equally effective warband
using that rare. I have been quite fortunate in winning rares, I think
I have drafted four in addition to my starting rare, but I'm only able
to use one of them in my warband effectively. It is the second and
third picks whick turn out to be the key choices for warband
improvement, for example getting a Wild Elf Warmage to go with
Vlaakith, Lich Queen, or a Warpriest of Vandria with an Arcane Ballista.
I think that yes, there is a slight disadvantage to joining the league later on, but I tend to look at it as though you were an expansion team in the NHL, in that you don't usually start off with the perfect mix. The other teams may have a greater selection of minis to develop synergies, but you still get to make a 200 point warband. One suggestion is to get a War Drums Starter set as your starting roster. They are currently available at imagine and you would have 12 minis to choose from. That's what I did, and I started off with a 200 point warband. The other option is to get a booster from one of the newer sets because they tend to have lots of "instant death" in them that can turn the tide with one failed saving throw.
Although last Sunday's event didn't happen due to a lack of people showing up, I am still looking forward to the session this upcoming weekend. Tom and Kevin and I are all going to be there (Kev can only attend every second week as it conflicts with his DDRPG schedule), and I'm hoping that Norm can make it out as well. The weather was just too nice last Sunday and I know he likes to take advantage of the good weather while it lasts. Matt is a die-hard Blue Bomber fan and I expect he was watching the football game on Sunday, so if he shows up and brings Raymond along, that would make six players, and two booster drafts. When it comes down to playing games, the more the merrier, so if you can make it out we'd be glad to have you.
Cheers, nervo

| | By the way, one new thing that I am going to implement is that players who do not attend and defend their spot on the ladder will automatically be bumped down at least one spot. This was already the case for 1st place players that haven't showed up but I think it's more fair if it applies to everyone. | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------

| This past Sunday, three players came out for the league. Tom sidestepped his Arcane Ballista to a 2-0 victory over Kevin (1-1) and Jeff (0-2).
Tom's Warband: Arcane Ballista (48) Warpriest of Vandria (40, c4) Combat Medic (28) Combat Medic (28) Orc Wizard (24) Halfling Slinger (12) Frost Dwarf (11) Arcanix Guard (9) 200 points, 8 activations, Drow Outpost
Kevin's Warband: Fire Giant Forgepriest (84) Elf Warmage (42) Greater Barghest (35) Harmonium Guard (27, c3) Soldier of Bytopia (12) 200 points, 5 activations, Dragon Graveyard
Jeff's Warband: Shuluth, Archvillain (59, c5) Berserk Flesh Golem (47) Blood Ghost Berserker (37) Sacred Watcher (18) Troglodyte Thug (11) Quaggoth Slave (10) Hunting Cougar (9) Arcanix Guard (9) 200 points, 8 activations, Hailstorm Tower
Tom chose to draft a War Drums booster and surprised us with his first pick.
1 (Tom) Flameskull (25) 2 (Kevin) Warforged Barbarian (49) 3 (Jeff) Warforged Bodyguard (32) 4 (Jeff) Tiefling Blademaster (27, c3) 5 (Kevin) Hunting Cougar (9) 6 (Tom) Goblin Blackblade (12) 7 (Tom) Derro (11) 8 (Kevin) Orc Mauler (26)
Tom cherry picked the Flameskull because it can be used with the Warpriest of Vandria's commander effect and he already has lots of Warforged Barbarians. Kevin gladly scooped up the rare with his second pick, and I chose a bodyguard for Shuluth and a Tiefling Blademaster to keep this solid commander out of their hands. The Hunting Cougar went to Kevin as he needs some low point fodder to fill out his warband.
Standings: 1 Tom 2 Kevin 3 Jeff 4 Matt 5 Raymond 6 Graham 7 Norm
Imagine Games and Hobbies has lowered the price of boosters to $14.95 + tax, which meant that after the $6 entry fees, $2.80 was left over for the bonus draft. That brings the total to $9.25, so if we have four players next time there will definitely be a bonus draft.
There will be no league this week, as I will be running a DDM demo and tournament at Manitoba Comic Con. The next session will take place at 1PM on the first Sunday of October. | | FEED ME! ----------------------------------------------
