Every Friday at 7:15 PM and Saturday at 1pm we meet to play a Dungeons and Dragons Minis League at Ziggy's Comics, 685 Osbourne Street, Winnipeg.
ENTRY:
To join, simply buy any booster of minis for a low price of $12 and build a 200 point warband from the 8 minis inside. There is an additional $5 entry fee every week to be put into prizes.
We play three 50 minute games each Friday night, and at the end of the night we draft boosters and add our choices to our rosters. There is one booster draft for every three players that attends. Everyone is guaranteed to win at least 2 minis every time they attend. Some players subscribe to the tournament, meaning that they pay entry fees but may not attend, in which case draft picks are selected by proxy.
All of the money from entry fees goes back to the players in prizes. When there is enough of a surplus, a bonus draft occurs.
PAIRINGS:
We use a ladder system where the top seed defends against the participant immediately below them on the ladder, the third seed defends againt the fourth, and so on. One point is scored for a victory and zero points for a loss. If the lower-ranked person on the ladder wins, they jump over their opponent, taking their spot. In subsequent rounds, the highest ranked player with one point plays the second ranked player with one point, third highest plays the fourth highest, while the highest ranked player with zero points plays the second highest with zero, and so on. If there is an odd number of players with one point, the lowest ranked player with one point plays the highest ranked player with zero points. The third round continues in a similar manner.
DRAFT GROUPS:
Players are put into prize groups of three or four based on their position on the ladder at the start of the night, so that everybody competes against players with similar skill levels and roster sizes. This means that not just the top finishers will have a chance at picking the rares, but the lower ranked players as well, so that they will get an opportunity to become more competitive. All boosters to be drafted at the end of the night are pooled together, and the draft order is as follows (based on three groups):
First pick goes to group 1 winner, second pick goes to group 2 winner, third pick goes to group 3 winner, fourth pick goes to group 1 second place etc...
BONUS DRAFT:
The order for selection in the bonus draft is determined by the following method:
First there is a weighted draw among the bottom eight participants on the ladder. If there are fewer than eight participants, players who have entered by subscription but did not attend are seeded after the weighted draw. Occasionally there is enough money left to bonus draft two bonus boosters at the end of the night, in which case both boosters are drafted together.
NEW:
As a bonus prize, from now on the first place finisher will receive free entry for next week's event.
EPIC Saturdays:
Come with a 500 point warband built from your roster. Pairings are made on a challenge basis, with the top player on the ladder making the first challenge. Each player may refuse only one challenge per day. The winner of the game, if ranked lower than his opponent, switches position on the ladder with his opponent.
One booster will be drafted for every game played on Saturday, with the two players splitting the cost. | |

| Eight players attended the January 18 session of Ziggy's Minis League.
Starting in group 2, Jeff C wound up in first place for the first time and drafted a Bar-Lgura. Though he started with a 136 point no commander warband in week 1, he drafted together a very competitive warband centered around the Aspect of Loviatar.
Tom lost to Jeff C in the second round as his opponent was well prepared to deal with the Pit Fiend ( two Halfling Slingers in an evil outsider foe commander effect) and was bumped down to the second rung of the ladder. However, he still managed to win group 1 and pulled his second Gelatinous Cube for the league.
Mike fell to third place as he once again failed to win his first game against Tom, but this week his Nightmare was much more effectively mounted by his Blood Ghost Berserker.
Norm had a rough day as his tough warband was hamstrung by a poor map choice. The Broken Demongate did not work well for him as his Capricious Copper Dragon was unable to get to a victory area and reap the rewards, and he fell to fourth place.
Darce finished with a 2-1 record and hopped over inactive players Erick and Kevin into fifth place. His only loss was a close game to Jeff C in the last round.
Jeff K brought a full eight activations for the first time in a while thanks to his newly acquired Bruenor Battlehammer, and won group 3, drafting an Umber Hulk Delver. He also scored the first pick in the bonus draft, pulling an Ogre Brute.
Ashton played a Pit Fiend/Justicator combo but won only one game as he was once again mostly out-activated.
Liam took his heavy hitting Hill Giant Barbarian out of his warband and went 0 for 3 as his Redspawn Arcaniss/Wild Mage combo was squishy. | |

| Eight players contested for the top spot on January 25.
Finishing in first place was Kevin, who charged up the ladder from group 2, defeating Tom (who defeated champion Jeff C) in the last round. Kevin won a Rage Drake for his efforts.
Second place went to Tom who played the same warband for the third straight week. He drafted a Capricious Copper Dragon.
Jeff C fell two spots to third place after he lost to Tom in the first round, once again due to a routing Aspect of Loviatar.
Mike dropped to fourth place as he had a problem with the rest of his warband outrunning his Harmonium Guard and being left out of command.
Norm came in fifth place after dropping some close games, but managed to get more value out of the Capricious Copper Dragon's hoardkeeper ability.
Darce dropped to sixth place, fielding a low hp warband with no rares in the mix. He did get some mileage out of the Medusa Archer's gaze attack.
Ashton jumped into eight place thanks to his first round win over Jeff K, and drafted an Ogre Brute for winning group 3.
Jeff K played no dwarves this week and went a dismal 0-3. As a consolation, his name came up first in the bonus draft for the second straight week and he won a Nightmare. | |

| Ten players plus two subscribers made it twelve paid entries for week 17 of Ziggy's Ladder League. Although the champ held onto the top spot, there was lots of volatility on the ladder with a few upsets.

lost the battle of the Bruenors but got some consolation as he scooped
the rare Sahuagin Baron with the second pick in his group. He also
generously donated a War of the Dragon Queen booster to celebrate our
20th session, and he picked second in the double bonus draft, selecting
a Clawfoot Rider.

I'm pretty happy with it. We've even had 1-3 players each week paying an entry fee even though they can't make it so that they can get more pieces on their roster (picked by proxy). We've got our conversion to 2.0 figured out (you'll be able to start with 2 boosters) and we're introducing epic challenge matches next week. All together it's been lots of fun. I hope to see you come out some day. | |
