Hello everyone.

Here's a new thread as per "Krush's" request.  I think the other thread went over a year.  Despite previous versions loading slowly, this time there have been no problems.

The Star Wars release had 7 people out, and went off smoothly.  Thanks to all who came out.  I hope you all wear those Boba Fett shirts with pride.

Cheers,

The Beer Baron

Can I have someone post on the Salty Pete thread please for the D&D game.  I can't post on it at the moment, as the system is locking me out.

Hey All. I finally made it back to civilization. Though part of me misses the rugged wilderness of the north. Also it feels weird to use a toilet again. Just thought I had to share that with you. Yeah.

Secondly, Glenn didn’t break his arm, that Toronto “player” (goon would be more fitting) under the direct orders form the C.F.L Head office jumped directly on to his arm with the full intention of breaking it. In an attempt to prevent, in the leagues eyes, the worst Grey Cup ever. Lets face it. Who out side of bomber and rider fans in other provinces are going to watch the “ Banjo Cup” now! (That right I renamed it)

Ok enough of my conspiracy rant.

Third, He Scott if it’s not to late, please put me down for a half price case of Starships and a copy of starships of the Galaxy please.

And lastly, would anyone be interested in having a game of Axis and Allies this Friday?

Since we're starting a new thread and all I figure it's time to start thinking about schedules in the new year, January's is starting to peculate in my brain already. With that in mind I have some questions for the lot of you as to what you'd like to see on the schedule.

Sealed Events

In regards to D&D minis do you want to continue with a monthly Sealed event? If so do you prefer sealed events to be on Thursday nights or would they be better on Saturday afternoons?

Speaking of Sealed events are the Star Wars minis players interested in another sealed box event?

League Events

The Leagues have been very popular, a new one will resume in January. Tyler's come forth with the idea of doing an Eternal Campaign, I don't know if he's volunteering to run it though. Scott has a couple ideas. I am ready to run with a new round of the current Ladder system or my new points based system which ever people prefer.

My points system is as follows:

Each win would give a player 2 points, each loss or tie including a bye would be worth 1 point. In addition the top place in each additional session would be awarded 4 points, 2nd place gets 2 points, and everyone else gets 1 bonus point.

2 bonus points will be awarded per session to players using a strong theme warband.

After the final regular league session the player pool will be divided into two groups for a playoff round. The top 8 players in point totals would be in group A and compete for the top League prizes. The remaining players not in the top 8 will have their own consolation tournament to compete for runner up prizes.

Any feedback as to what system you'd prefer is apreciated.

How many League sessions should there be in a given month? Is 2 enough to keep the interest going? Do you prefer the sessions to be on Thursdays, Saturdays, or both?

Star Wars Minis League

Do the SWM players want a League of their own? Once a month, Rebel vs. Imperials theme perhaps?

Friday Nights

Help Scott keep things busy. What do you want to see on Friday Nights? More demos, WotC or in general? A stronger boardgame club? Casual play minis? Minis tournaments? Dreamblade? RPG space? Something else?

D&D Minis Demo Time!

On Saturday December 8th from 2PM to 6 PM I'll be running a D&D minis demo at the Gamers lair Outpost at 794 Sargent Ave.

http://www.gamerslair.com/index.php

Come on down and learn how to play D&D minis.

At starting at 6 PM they're having a 200 point Constructed Tournament which is free to everyone.

http://www.gamerslair.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=911&day=2007-12-8&c=2

I'll be sticking around to play in the tournament so even if I don't see you there for the demo perhaps you'll come to play in the tournament.

BTW, I'll have Saturday December 1st off from work, so I'm hoping to come down for SWM that day too...

Sealed - 1 sealed a month should be fine.  No more than 1 though.

League - I like your league idea.  We can run with that.

SWM League - I like this idea too, perhaps once a month?  Perhaps a booster draft league (to keep the stormtroopers away from you-know-who).

Fridays - I'm not officially involved as Friday is my night off, and what is happening to my D&D group remains uncertain.  I would like to see more boardgaming, but whatever works out is okay by me.

The two tier league could be interesting.
How do we plan on playing the group A/group B tourneys? With our variance in attendance this might be tricky to manage.

Also, are there any rules in warband building like we had this time (ie: using same commander)?

As for board game night, how has that been going? Are people showing up to learn to play new games?

Only the finals would have 2 groups. Everyone would be in the same pool for the "regular season" so to speak. After 8-10 rounds the 8 players who have acumalated the highest point totals would be invited to participate in the finals to possibly win the big prizes.

Everyone who played in the league but didn't make the top 8 would go to the consolation round where they would compete to earn some runner up prizes.

That being said I was toing with the idea of there being 2 divisions, Thursday and Saturday. Players could compete in both as they came out to events but only the top 4 from each division would move on to the finals. In the case where a player is among the top in both sides only their highest point total would count, lowest being dropped allowing the next best player to enter the finals.

Some people wanted no restrictions on warbands for this league, I'm okay with that. Whatever the people want there is good. That being said I think some kind of warband rules make the league more distinct from just a regular tournament.

The comander system is an easy one to do, if the majority would like to do that again we can go for it. Other systems could work as well.

Sealed Events

I like limited play, so I'd definitely be up for a sealed tournament. Maybe even a draft, although I'm not all that fond of drafts for various reasons which have been mentioned before. One thing I would like to see is a non sanctioned sealed tournament, where people can buy any two (non-huge? probably) boosters that scott has for sale to use as their sealed boosters.

League Events

League's ok, although I dunno about very popular. Only six people have showed up for more than half the sessions and two of those are Scott and Mike. While the league is interesting, and I enjoy it (other than wizards screwing over my plan and not providing a single useful melee beater in the last two sets to go with my Cleric of Sune), I don't think the current league places enough emphasis on regular attendance, but at the same time it unequally penalizes people for not showing up.

In regards to the not enough emphasis on regular attendance, the way it's set up is that pretty much whoever goes undefeated during the last session will win the league. This is especially true if there is a lower turnout and you get a person matched up against someone way higher ranked than themselves in the final round.

The unequal penalties for not showing up come about b/c someone in first loses a lot more than someone not in first. If you're not in first, so essentially lose 5 points to the rest of the field, which is easy enough to make up. You get 10 pts for beating someone ranked one slot above you after all. I understand the desire to not want someone in first to skip a bunch of sessions just to hold on to their top spot, but sometimes people can't make sessions, and if the session they can't attend is the last one, they're outta luck and it doesn't matter what they've done the rest of the season.

As to the next league, Mike's Edge style structure seems fine with me. I do kinda like the idea of some kinda warband theme to lend cohesion to the league, otherwise it's just a bunch of single tournaments, but I think 12 sessions of playing the same commander over and over is boring.

I like Mike's suggestion of splitting into two pools, a Thursday and a Saturday pool. I'd say do that with the commander pools, and say that you can't have the same commander as you had in the past pool, and if you play both Thursday and Saturday you can't have the same commander in each one. I'd also make the regular season as mike said 6 weeks long. Maybe 8.  But I think 4 is a bit short and 8 a bit long. Actually it might have to be 4 weeks after all. Assuming it's one Thursday and one Saturday a month, 6 sessions for each would be 6 months and that's a bit long don't you think?

I would strongly advise against doing an EC style game. I played in the Eternal Campaign for a long time (over a year I think) and while it was a lot of fun early on, as more and more sets were released, there were more and more abusable combinations of warlords/lieutenants/magical items. I also think keeping track of the magical items would be a bit of a hassle.

A non-sanctioned Sealed event is a good idea. I posed the question of when they should be held with the thought that perhaps Saturdays would work better as there is more time available to construct your warbands or Draft them should that be the format.

I think the League is a popular idea, it's just a matter of hitting on the right formula to ensure interest remains constant throughout the length of the League. I'm always being asked or hearing from Scott about people who ask when the next League is going to start.

Perhaps this format will be the one. Good atendance will be rewarded in the fact that even if you lose you'll still earn points so it's possible that with a poor record and great attendance you'll have enough points to make the finals. In theory anyway.

Maybe this time around instead of drafting a commander we could draft any single mini, possibly locking you into a faction but allowing you to build a number of warbands around it.

I think you have to do at least 8 sessions to give some possibility of seperation between players and allow for the possibility of missing a session or two and still being able to make a decent showing in the rankings.

If I you want to do 8 sessions, then I don't think you can split up into two pools. That would result in an 8 month league at one session a month which is too spread out imo.

Assuming there is only one session for each pool per month.

For this go around I think keeping everyone in the same group might be the way to go. Either way 8 people make it to the finals. Play it over 4 months with the finals being a session on an early Saturday in May.

Sorry to hear about the low turnout. Epic isn't my favorite format but I was otherwise busy anyway. Sadly I'm working tomorrow so I won't be out for any events then either.

Hopefully things pick up for the final 2 Ladder League Sessions next week.

"Champion of the Centaur Commander. Knight of the Gnoll Druid. Vindicated Champion of the Dragon Wrought Kobold!

If I had anytime at all during the day, I would have put something together. But with the busy season here, I was reluctant to do so as I thought there would have been too many interuptions (like Wednesday night). Turned out it was rather quiet, and would have been a good night to play. Sigh........

So I went to DCI online and reported it as "did not occur". While I was ther I looked up some interesting stats on tournaments.

We had 22 people out to our DoD pre-release, better than anyone else west of Quebec (a DDM hotspot). Here's what I found for DoD pre-releases (attendance):

BC - 16
AB - 14 (Calgary)
- 12 (Edmonton) Recent Qualifier Event - 10
SK - no event
MB - 22 (that's us!)
ON - 15 (Hamilton)
- 9 (Toronto - will anyone show up to watch the Grey Cup?) RQE - tba (coming up)
QC - 27 (Montreal) - RQE - 12
- 28 (Montreal other venue)
- 18 (Quebec city)
NF - 24
NB - ? (delinquent)
NS - no event
PEI - 9 (Kensington)
YK - no event
NWT - no event

Well, we rank pretty high, all things considered. I also looked at regulaly scheduled games around the same dates, and even though attendance was high in Montreal, their regular game attendance is about the same as ours. Well, it is only Canada eh. Or is it....

California - 18 (Carmichel)
- 11 (Santa Clara)
- 16 (Simi Valley)
Texas - 24 (Austin) Recent Qualifier Event - 7
- 8 (Garland) RQE - 8
North Dakota - 6 (Fargo)
South Dakota - 6 (Souix Falls)
Minesota - 20 (Minneapolis) RQE - 14
New York - 17 (Rhochester) RQE - tba
Florida - 6 (Orlando)

So it seems in the big picture we do pretty good. I think I'll request a qualifier again. Maybe if everyone else does, we'll get one.

Fun fun fun.......

You tryin' ta talk trash based on the only guy in the Star Wars movies that was a bigger wussy mama's boy than Luke?

Seriously, mine are mostly for fun theme squads since it is casual minis.

The point is to have a good time and maybe get some new people out and playing in a friendly enviroment that once they are addicted Scott may profit freely from their need for little tiny chinese plastic men. So it was written, so it shall be.

Pits have made it to SWM.

Pits

The rules for pits have been updated to take into account involuntary movement effects from various “unleashed” Force powers, such as Force Push. Add the following text to the rulebook entry:

“If a character is involuntarily moved onto a pit square, stop its movement in the nearest square adjacent to the pit and make a save of 11. On a successful save, the character remains adjacent to the pit. On a failure, it is defeated. Characters with abilities that allow them to enter pit squares (such Flight) make a save of 6 instead.”
