After having his strength drained by that acursed door Nymagus felt as useless as a newborn babe. Stuck riding Forbes so that he can save what little strength he does have for combat. Then it happens an attack by cursed deep elves. Those ebon skinned enemies of all things good in the world. With the confined spaces in the hallway Nymagus was almost useless unable to get to a point where he could unleash his arcane energies. However his companions made fools of the ebon skinned enemies.

Upon their defeat the room was searched and a door was found. Lanister the "so called" gambler has continued to refuse to take any chances, which has Nymagus wondering why he is even there. He throws his weapons around, doesn't take watches, doesn't help with setting up camp, and generally seems to have no useful talents to the rest of the fellowship. Even the goblin blixx was able to find the secret door which led into a room with an elven puzzle chest. Items inside the chest seem to have been left there by an elven warrior in case he was in need and in the area. The group decided to sleep in the room which held the the chest, making it much easier to defend if someone, or something were to come through either of the corrupted portals found in the same room as the secret door. Even with the energy channeled from Gawain to Nymagus he was still much too weak to take a watch, for the first time since the group started to travel together.

In what they assume is the morning as he sits trying to enjoy his stale iron rations worry creases the brow of Nymagus as he sits in the room with the two corrupted portals pondering the options. Suddenly a look of realisation comes across his face, and he starts to frantically dig through his possessions. Even in his weakened state he manages a smile when he finds the treasure he was searching for. From his sachel or weightless paper he pulls forth a silver foil book about portals. He pours through the pages searching for any information that may help him to redeem the corrupted portals in the room with him. It would appear to Nymagus that the time has come for him to stop acting before he has all the information. (in other words mike i am going to pour through the book about finding a way to redeem the corrupted portals to try and redirect them to there original location, yes that means i will not be going anywhere for at least a day while i do a lil research)

OK,

So, I am behind on things again due to a busy work schedule, but I will not let the team down.  A recap will be out tonight (I hope), but if not it will be before the deadline.

As to resting for a full day, I have no problem with that.  It should allow Gawain to heal Nymagus of all ability damage eventually.

Cheers

The Continuing Tale of Gawain Aranadan

After much debate at the site of the Elven ruins, we decided to make camp for the night and  arrange a corral to hold our horses as we descended into the earth.  Casey and Nymagus continued to make plans and I helped out Casey in making "scarecrows" from suits of leather armour we had collected in our travels.  They would not scare away humanoid raiders after our horses, but we hope that they will disuade most less intelligent predators to leave our horses alone.  I pray to Lathander that the poor beasts manage to survive our absence.  We left them with food and good sources of water, so it is now in the hands of the gods.

Descending into the dark confines of the passage beneath the tower we found a room, roughly in the shape of a cross.  Except, there were no doors out.  Even the keen senses of our elven and dwarf companions could not find a hidden way.  Then Nymagus used his magic to discover what was afoot.  He told us that there were magical runes upon the wall, including one to the north that indicated travel.  Although we could not see it, he claimed that he had activated a magical gate on the wall that we could travel through.  At this point, of course, Lannister had to taunt the elf and ask him why we could not walk through another wall.  Nymagus promptly did and disappeared from view after speaking a word in some tongue I do not understand and touching the stone on the western wall.  When he did not reappear in roughly 30 seconds, we all began to file through after him, fearing that something on the other side had prevented his return.

We all found ourselves in a dark space, which after some exploration was found to be a large cavern of some 300 feet diameter.  An alcove similar in construction to the section of wall we had passed through to get here was located in our searches, but it was defaced with many marks, and its magic was now vanished.  We would not be able to return to our starting point this way.  Further searching located a single tunnel leaving the cavern and descending further into the earth.  I was beginning to have concerns that we were now off the path we had meant to follow.  No time to fret, however, as there was no way back.  We would have to go forward or starve where we were.

After much walking through the narrow tunnel that eventually canted downwards at roughly a 45 degree slope we entered a chamber.  The walls were hung with glowing lichens and in the centre of the room a pile of skulls covered a defaced holy symbol of Corellon.  At the far side of the room was a stone door covered in evil symbols and a leering skull with and open mouth.  After study from a distance Nymagus and myself moved closer to the pile of skulls and examined them more closely.  This was the work of evil beings, as the skulls appeared to be elvish.  Nymagus touched the skulls with a spear and they began to fly into the air, screaming.

The battle against the skulls was short and painless for ourselves, but a close thing.  Felix and I spent much of our turning power to reduce the skulls to dust while the rest of the party attempted to beat them apart as well.  Lannister was furiously working to unlock the stone door at the same time.  By the end of the battle Nymagus was able to determine that the skulls were animated by evil necromantic energies, and had been building up to an explosion of some sort, which we had suspected because of their glowing red eyes.

Lannister was unable to open the stone door, and further religious and bardic knowledge revealed that a sacrifice of some sort would be necessary to move onwards.  After some debate I borrowed Lannister's drowish dagger and offered my blood to the door by smearing it across the face of the stone.  Casey, Cutter and Felix also tried the same, but the door remained closed.  The Nymagus stepped forwards, allowing himself to bleed all over the place and thrusting his arm into the stone mouth og the leering skull.  He was knocked unconscious and left drained of strength by the experience.  Casey's donkey Forbes had to be used to support Nymagus after my attempt to Restore his strength produced only a limited recovery.  The evil suffusing the room was sure to have affected things.

The door, however, did now open.  With some short prepartion we stepped through in a standard marching order and no sooner had we gone 30 feet when Cutter signalled a halt.  Before he could react further we were attacked by a band of drow.  Worse for us, this band had a wizard with them.  A ball of fire and a lightning bolt cut through our ranks and I was injured along with Felix, Cutter, Thagnor and the goblins.  Torchy somehow seemed to avoid most of the damage.  A fierce battle was fought, and I was unable to assist for the most part in the fight.  Both Cutter and Felix suffered so heavily from the enemy assault that I spent most of the battle healing them.  Felix even collapsed for a time after suffering some sleep poison I suspect, as the same happened to myself.

After the drow were defeated we found two further portal alcoves, but Nymagus claimed that both had been corrupted and they no longer accessed their original destinations.  As far as he could tell they would transport us further into the earth.  The land of the drow I suspect.  Casey and Thagnor found a secret hiddne door in one wall of the chamber which Lannister then was summoned to search for traps and open.  Lannister seems to have forgotten how to do his job, however, as he could not even find the portal, let alone open it.  Blix, however, saved the day by opening the door for us with instruction from Casey.  This incensed Lannister even more than usual.  I will have to keep my eyes on Lannister and make sure he does no harm to Blix.  The little one is trying his hardest to make amends and befriend Lannister, but Lannister will have none of it.  Blix even tried to heal Lannister after the battle, but was turned away and healed Felix instead.

Within the passage beyond the doorway we found a small chamber which contained a chest.  inside the chest were contained emergency supplies left by an Elf warrior centuries ago if he needed them.  We obtained some potions, twin magical scimitars, a magical belt, and a suit of magical elf sized plate mail.  Lannister seemed to be fascinated by the scimitars, that loss of his blade in the past still haunts his soul.

An uneventful night was passed after this, and with the sensation of dawn (although I could not see Lathander's light) we began to study our options for going onwards.

With Lathander's Light

Gawain

Once we got to the tower we decided to pen up the horses and mules and go on. Opening the door we reached a room with no apperant doors. Nymagus dared lannister to walk into a wall and he dared back to walk into a different wall. Much to everyone's surprise Nymagus stepped up to the door, said he would b back, touched the door, said something else, and walked through it. I followed right away in case Nymagus needed my awesome strength and agility to save his life yet again. When I stepped through it I could not see much until Torchy came through. When he did I saw we were (the rest of the party had stepped through by then) in a huge cavern, and I mean right in the middle, that was at least 250 feet in diameter. we searched around for a bit then found a long skinny tunnel. Seeing That the portal back was destroyed we went on. Coming to a room at the end of the tunnel we saw a pile of skulls of a symbol and glowing moss on the walls. Showing everyone my amazing survival skills I showed them that the moss was eatable (I didn't tell them it tasted like feet) After a while Nymagus poked the skulls with a spear butt and they fell over. before i could do anything heroic they flew in the air screeching and their eyes glowing red. after some quick work by Felix and Gawain we found out that they would have blown up if we didn't stop them in time. We also found out by my superior intellect that the door at the end of the room needed a sacrifice. After a discussion some of the party cut themselves and put their hands on the door. We needed more. Nymagus did the same but held his had on the door longer. it opened but he could not do anything so we put him on Forbes. Walking into the next room we saw drow. I waited till the right moment then unleashed one of my spells of awesome might. I was soon targeted and put to sleep soon after they saw how strong I was. When I woke up we found a secret door at the far side of the room and entered. We saw a chest. After some long looting and learning of things we knew that this was the back-up stash of a famous warrior. We slept in that same room and now it is morning and the only way out of this accursed place is by the two corrupted teleporters, that we now have discovered lead farther into the underdark, and closer to our enemies, the drow.

Smack dab in the middle

06/04/2007 10:47 AM
After some effort, Nymagus and I finally managed to convince the others that an alternative route would be the best thing to do. Having our enemies numbers continually increase as we approach on the surface, a subterranean approach appears to be the best idea. I know that the Drow will be crawling down there, but I think we are well suited to deal with them.
After building a ramshackle pen to keep our horde of equines and providing somewhat for their safety, we headed down the stairs of the collapsed elven ruin on the beginning of the path. Straight away, the place seemed almost typically elven: the first room had no doors! We searched for hidden entrances and found none. Nymagus, having an incling of the situation, used his eldritch vision and found three runes on the walls. While two were peril and death, the other was travel. He began the ritual to open the travel door, as it seemed safest. Lannister, in his typical idiocy, taunted the proud Nymagus by tempting him to go through a different door. Nymagus, presumably thinking the doors were two way affairs, went through the peril door. When he did not immediately return, we went in after him to come to his aid. Once through, we found why he had not returned - the portal on the other side had been destroyed. Not knowing for certain where we were, other than in a 300' diamater cavern, we managed to find a small tunnel. Heading down this, we found two alcoves similar to where Nymagus had found the runes earlier, though these appear to have been defiled. This room also had a symbol of Correllon Larethian in the floor, hidden under a ritualistic pile of elven skulls. While Gawain had cautioned touching them, Nymagus began cleaning them away to dig out the holy symbol. The skulls came to life and began flying around. We defended ourselves and began dispatching them. At one point, there eyes began to glow an eerie red, but they were all felled before whatever malicious intent they had could come to fruition.
At the end of this chamber, we found a sealed portal that would not open but seemed, according to those inclined to know, to require a sacrifice. While some of us offered our bleeding hands to the door, Nymagus went further and the door took most of his life force. The door came to life and opened and Nymagus, near death, was hoisted onto Forbes to ease his burden. As we snaked our way through the tunnel before us, we were set upon by a contingent of Drow. Those cursed elves much maligned us but we prevailed in the end. This room, it seemed, was a dead end.
Thinking I had found the continuance, I discovered a secret door. While Lannister again proved his worth by not being able to open the door, Blixx proved fully capable. At any rate, we entered the secret alcove and found a gleaming suit of armour and weapons that had been left here, according to the note attached to them, by an elf over 500 years ago in case he had need of them in passing through this way again. While he may still some day return, we felt that we might have as much if not more need for the items at the moment.
Currently, we are setting camp for the night in the treasure alcove as it seems the most easily defended. Nymagus is studying his books of portals to see if he can get the two in the next chamber to work as they were intended. If it weren't for Lannister's ego and Nymagus' pride leading us in to the wrong tunnel, I'd wonder if the wolf had led us astray, but I doubt the intelligent lupine would have though we'd choose peril over travel! With luck, whatever spirit saw fit to bring the animal to me in the first place will continue to watch over and help to guide us on to the court. I guess we'll wait and see.

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

Shadowdale Campaign Chronicles Part IV May 30/2007

First person narration by Lannister Lazenby

We camped again last night. The group is debating going underground to get to this Elven library/court thingy. It makes no sense whatsoever to me. Besides being dark, dank and full of Drow, how can their possibly be a path there. I’m sure it will get us all killed (or worse).

Common sense is over-ruled yet again, this motley band I’ve fallen in with has decided to go the underground route after all. So we pen up the horses (like they’re going to be here when we get back, right.) and start our journey. Reluctantly I pull up the rear with my two mules.

We get to a dead end and can’t find any doors. Good, now we can go overland. Then our braniac mage does some detect magic (finds runes supposedly, but he won’t say what they say) and says there is a magic portal right here, and would I like to go through. He points to a plain wall. Okay, I’m peeved at this point, as I’m sure this is just his way of putting me down. “Yeah sure,” I say, “I’ll go through your portal as soon as you go through mine!” and I point to the wall. So he walks over, says some mumble-jumble and walks through the wall. (Wizards?!?!) So as if the mage isn’t bad enough, everyone else does too. I’m thinking I should just take off with the horses at this point, but I’m not herding 22 mounts through this infested forest myself. Well, I don’t like it, but there is safety in numbers, so I go as well. I’m sure it’s a big mistake though. Sure enough I get though. Turns out though, the room we appear in is one way only, and we can’t get back. The runes are busted and defaced. I think I said before that elves don’t do a very good job looking after their stuff. So we continue on.

There’s a tunnel, and it goes up and down, then opens into a cavern. It is lit with some phosphorescent green moss. Veil tries to eat some. (Why does someone always try to eat the glowing green moss?) There is a circular room with defaced Corelon runes in the floor, covered in skulls. I get called on to search for doors, as usual. They seem to think I’m disposable and I always get to try this stuff first. Anyway, Gawain says to leave the skulls alone. Guess what, Nymagus has to go and poke them with a stick! Stupid wizard! The cleric knows what’s best, why don’t you listen to him. So they rise up and start flying around.I tell Casey to cover me while I try to get the door I find open, and I’m trying to do it fast. Gawain and Felix use their holy turning powers to destroy most of them, and the party gets the rest.

The door I was working on is a weird one, no handles, no hinges and no secret levers. It is determined that it is an evil door, and requires a sacrifice to get through. Gawain cuts his hand (Felix senses the door is stirring – ewww) but it is not enough. Nymagus (here we go again, crazy wizard) cuts himself until he is almost dead, but the door opens. He might be crazy, but it did work, I’ll give him that. Better him than me anyways. So despite my continual reminders about this being a bad idea, we continue on. Oh, and then we get attacked by Drow. Didn’t see that coming!

They lightning bolt us! ZZZZap! They Fireball us! BOOMBAH! Did I not say this was a bad idea? Did I not say there would be Drow? Would anyone ever take my advice? Anyway, I shoot, and kill one. Then I dive into combat (I hate combat) and try to save their dumb asses. Everyone is getting hurt. Veil is put to sleep, but stepping on him wakes him up (although he couldn’t do that for me, and my precious sword was stolen by Blix’s friends). See how nice of a guy I am! Felix goes down! Gawain is now asleep. Cutter is really wounded, but he’s still at it (I don’t know how he does it, but I’m glad he does). Then he swings too hard and gets me (owww, it still hurts). I tumble into position and away from Cutter. I get hit, but I kill another one! We win again, but the cost was high. I got hurt more from our side! I still think coming this way was a bad idea.

The healing goes around. Blix is now a cleric, but he refuses to heal me despite my rough condition. Goblins are a spiteful race, I don’t know why Gawain can’t see it. They’ll turn on him one day, mark my words (you did mark them, didn’t you). Casey says there is a secret door, but I can’t see it. We argue and make a bet. Curses though, I lose. F**k! I toss my gold at him. He then waves Blix over, who opens the door, and smiles (spitefully) at me. Then Casey gives Blix my gold! Double f**k!

So we find a chest. It is an elven design, and I’ve had it up to my keister with elves, but they goad me into looking at it (as if killing 2 Drow wasn’t contributing to the party). Anyway, I can’t find an opening. Nymagus steps up and does the magic thingy, shifts some leafy things and gets it open (show-off). So there’s loot inside, and lots of it. It’s about time. I see some scimitars that would be a good replacement for the one that got stolen. A scroll indicates that apparently there was some elf (Thalidor) who left them here 600 years ago. The scimitars can only be wielded by “an elven hero”. Sure it does. I’ll bet the elves just want to keep them for themselves. I’m starting to not trust elves anymore either, but they still aren’t as bad as goblins.

We rest for the night. Cutter practices with these new scimitars. Oh, and they dance in mid-air. Show-off! I hate sleeping underground, and miss the outdoors. Veil casts an illusionary tree for me to sleep under. Not as good as the real thing, but he’s a good kid, and the thought was nice. It’s the first good sleep I have in a while. The next day we move on, trying out some new portals Nymagus finds. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, I have a bad feeling about this.

As for who can play your character there's always Garret or Paula or perhaps the Chris/Jory combo that usualy does your rolling when you're busy servicing the customers.

Hello,

Should we perhaps consider dropping the game for one week if Scott is absent and Bach is minding the store?  That potentially means two characters MIA if the store is busy in the evening and Bach is called away.

We know that we have no breaks (except perhaps Gen Con) in the summer, so what do people think?

I personally could go either way, but if we don't run I won't be upset.  I do have a fair bit of stuff on this week that I am hoping to finish preparing for tonight.  If I don;t finish and we don't play tomorrow that means no midnight oil burning for me.

Anyways, the debate is now open.  Sound off!

Cheers

My vote is to play - I have already missed more than a couple of sessions.
Of coarse I won't find out until I get there cause I can't remember my maxmini's password!

Vote for food - George's would be a nice change.

Hello,

OK, sounds like we are a go.

I am away at work all day so will not have a chance to check here for any changes until about 4:30 or 5:00, just before I hop in the car to get to Gameknight.

Ans Niko, you don't need a password to read the threads here at Maxminis, only to post.

Cheers

The choice between D&D and no D&D is always an easy one.

D&D is an easy choice.  Though I will probably be missing the July 4th session since I will be about 8.5 hours away sitting in a fishing boat about the time we usually get started.  Which is also where I will probably be for the Pre-Release.

Only a few minutes until I head off for D&D. Good times.

See you all there.

It was a little RP heavy but I figured we needed to balance things as there are 2-3 major battles in your near future....

i love having a rping session every now and then. makes me happy, to not have to roll a lot of dice, and discuss things instead of just rolling to see what happens.

With the shorter session time you're bound to get sessions heavy on one aspect or another. It's a bit more of a challenge to keep both aspects balanced.

Aside from Nico being sleepy I hope it continues to hold your interest.

So, what happened?
Who is going to be the first person to chronicle last night's festivities?
Was there any combat?
Was Lannister as lazy as I wanted him to be?
Did Veil sing anything?
Was his dead father's ghost there to chastise him?
Did Nymagus do any silly wizardy stuff?
Did Cutter cut? (Slash, dice, mince, puree, stab, slice, chop, cleave or whack anything)
Did Casey find his wolf friend?
Did Gawain preach (or turn or heal)?
Did Blix betray the party like the backstabbing yellow-bellied turncoat he really is (if he didn't, he will soon, mark my words....).
Did Thagnor blow his jug?
Did Snoot & Blongo give themselves cool human names instead of dorky goblin ones?
Did T-bone and Meatsheild II survive the dungeon trek?
Did the Hobbies eat our other horsies?
Did Felix speakl in tongues, say anything crazy, or go on a rant about frogs?
Did MJ award any XP, or is he keeping us down for another week?

Inquiring minds want to know!
