Shadow Light Fellowship Chronicles Part V – June 13, 2007

First person narrative by Lannister Lazenby.

Currently we are in the village of Riley’s Cove, (pop. 100). It’s a pretty boring town. We came here after appearing in a lighthouse via teleporter. We arrived in town to find out that a caravan that comes through in 2 days time. We’re hoping to get hired on as caravan guards. Slim pickings here for farmer’s (or I guess fisher’s) daughters as there is no pub. Sigh….. Oh well, I make the best of it.
Gawain wants to scribe some scrolls, good idea since we usually run short on spells. Nymagus decides to by an old shanty. It was left empty after a widower ether died this last winter. It cost 7 gp, which I think is still too much.

The caravan eventually shows up. Gawain approaches them, and they’re surprised to see us. Lusco, the leader takes us on at 1 sp. per day. There is 6 wagons (3 full), 4 guards, and 16 serfs. The next day we go to head out, only to find Thagnor is missing. Some of the locals said he was heading east, while we are heading west. The landscape is mostly plains with light forest. We pass through 2 towns, one has a population of 8, the other was named Stenchburg, pop 100. They had a bad catch, but I don’t think any of these piss pot towns has any to offer. That night 20 monks of Ilmater pass by, lead by someone named Almore. They seem to know something about Gawain. Veil sings to them, but Lusco wakes up and tells him to shut up.
Almore says he saw a vision of Gawain bathed in light. I said at least he bathed in something. They ignore my remark. The stinky lot of them must be used to it by now. They give him a box with a symbol of Lathander. It’s locked and there is no key. Gawain asks how devout I’m feeling. Well, devout enough I suppose. So I go to work on it. After failing at my first attempt, I pull out my lucky lock pick, and (natural 20!) symbol in gold of Lathander. Not bad.

The next day the monks move on. We pack up and head out to the next village, and eventually come to the area where the monks said the bandits were. We find bodies and a looted caravan belonging to the “Altimore Consortium”. After camping we continue on for another day. As we set up camp, during 1st watch we are approached by 3 riders who were wounded. After healing from Gawain, they tell us they were from the “Iron Keg Consortium”, and were attacked 3 hours prior. The next day we travel on only to find the remains of their caravan. The bandit groups have 2-3 ogres, and 15-20 other humanoids. We decide to follow the bandits and recover the loot. The merchants of the IKC offer us 30%. I try to talk them into 50% (hey, right now they have nothing), and they bully us down to 20%. I think I’ll just pass it onto another group, minus what I deem appropriate.

We travel NE for about half an hour, then the trail goes due east. The trail is easy to follow. It leads to the ruins of a crumbled castle. We decide on a multiple pronged approach. By our best guess we figure they have seen some of our group. I sneak along low in the grass below Casey. We spot a tripwire. Too late to warn the others, they get coated with a pitchy black goop. Guess what’s next, flaming arrows! They burn, and we get shot at. I’m hit while disabling the trap in front of us. I dart up to a hole in the stone wall, but find it to be blocked off with wood. Nymagus fireballs the guys on the wall, while insulting them (okay, I admit sometimes he has style). Blix pees on Felix to try to put him out. Cutter, Felix, Gawain, and Veil move up and clog up the front entrance (err…hole). I finally get to the back to find 4 guards, and duck in behind a statue and hide. I pull out that vial of contact sleep poison, and lob it over onto their heads. Only 1 drops though. I peer out behind the statue and ranged sneak attack one a kill him outright. One runs, I jump out and shoot at the other. Dang! A miss. Both swords out now, miss with those too. Swish, swish, two more misses (in top form again, sigh….). Miss. Hit. I’m hit, and again. Miss. Miss. I’m hit. I hit hit and kill him. Yes! I coup de grace the guy sleeping. And apparently the rest of the group did pretty well too!

Cutter mowed through a bunch, and Nymagus barely escaped getting squashed by an ogre. Felix assisted Cutter to help soften them up. Gawain used a spiritual hammer, healed a bunch and smited an ogre! Casey was sniping the ogre in the back, and bandits too. Veil stoo off to the side, and sang a song of our heroics.
Now, on to looting, err, recovering trade goods.

Good session last night. Hopefully everyone enjoyed it.

We are indeed off next week, at least as far as the D&D campaign is concearned. We can discuss what we would like to do if anything next Wednesday for those who can be there. Based on where we left off it won't be apropriate to continue with the adventure.

That would make our next session June 27th. Speaking of which we will resume the action more or less where we left off after the battle.

Jory, Veil used up 4 crossbow bolts after you left. He hit the big Ogre twice. Hoozah.

As the battle calms down Veil will notice he recognizes some of these bandits and the ones that attacked and killed his daddy Dingle! Their leader doesn't seem to be among them though.

Your XP for this session is 1475 each.

If I don't see you have a good couple weeks everyone.

PS: And Len, no more rough stuff with Jory. That's how super villains are created.

With no D&D next week I just realized that I won't get to play till July 11th.

27th is the Roger Waters Concert and July 4th I will be away fishing.

Who wants to run Cutter for me while I am away?

Well I suppose in theory we could continue with D&D next week. The key players would be Veil and Lannister as we seek to wrap up the bandit subplot.

D&D is always better than no D&D.

Between chronicling and tending shop, I'm probably not the best choice to run Cutter. On the other hand, my new mobility feat and extra ranks in tumble need to be tested. So I could try to do it if no-one else wants to.

Jory should trade places with Nico or Chris L. I have to stop you boys from getting too physical. That kind of contact is best left for the boxing arena. Or gladitorial arena.

Time for a little midweek D&D posting bonus. 2 seperate bonuses in fact, 1 for those who can attend this coming Wednesday and 1 for those who can't.

If you can attend to play D&D next week then I want you to write a little paragraph on why or why not Lannister Lazenby would make a good leader.

If you are unable to attend next week submit a little write up on how you best feel to explain your character's absence while the rest of the party explores the ruined fort bandit lair.

The winner of each bonus will recieve 3 potions or scrolls of thier choice from the minor category in the DMG.

Feel free to post on the other category if you like, who knows maybe you'll earn some bonus points...

Being, I believe, the only one who managed to make it through the bandit encounter unscathed, Casey will volunteer to be on outside guard detail. As the party moves through the lair, hopefully unhindered, Casey will scout and track the areas surrounding the ruined castle. There are a few motivators for this: hunting down the bandits that left (assuming they're not still hiding in the castle); looking for traps, caches and anything else that might be interesting; and hunting the choicest game that he can find to help feed the party (this would also include foraging for the best roots, fungi, fruits etc.). While I feel Casey participated well enough in the fight itself, what with peppering the baddies with arrows, his guilt over not being injured will drive him to help in a way that he excels - Rangering! As Casey is starting run a bit low on arrows (has 12 left without counting any arrows that survived being shot - Mike, if you could let me know how many I can recover, that would be grand), any that get discovered in and around the lair would be greatly appreciated!

Also, he'll do a lot of praying and communing out in the wilderness, hoping to find a chatty wolf! Lots of exercise for Forbes (who seems bigger now!) and training on a new trick!

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

To keep things simple on the arrow/bolt front let's just use the simple rule of you recover half of what you shoot, rounding down. The rest are lost or broken.

As for Lannister "LazyBoy" Lazenby's leadership potential, I have to say I'm torn. While I've been a bit disappointed with his laissez-faire attitude and lack of devotion to the party, I like the guy. In general, I would tend to do what he said. However, if he told me to do something that I don't personally think is the right course of action, I'm not entirely sure I'd believe that his plan has been well thought out - he's a bit too "spur of the moment." Gawain, while spending perhaps too much time "thinking inside the box," he is at least thinking. I have certain strengths in the wilderness where I can take on leadership aspects as well.

I suppose, in reality, what we should first consider is whether we need a "leader." I think that we each have such varied backgrounds and abilities that we can each step to the front when the time calls for it. In general, we have functioned as a committee on most things in the past and we've gotten along fairly well. Had we simply followed the rule of Lannister, we would have confronted an army of over 150 enemies before getting to the elven library, not that he could be blamed for thinking the way he did, but any single person cannot have the perspective of a group. In essence, then, I don't think we need an all around leader, but should heed the words and thoughts of our fellow party members.

As for Lannister's ability to lead, as opposed to fitness to lead our group, again, I'm not entirely sure. He's never really taken the lead other than first to bed, first to hide, first to run from danger. This it not to say that each of those actions didn't have merit at the time. Lannister, while I believe he is truly loved by the party members, may not be liked by the party members! He is abrasive and opinionated. I think that there would be plenty of folk that would follow the leadership of an individual such as Lannister, but I don't think that we fit that design of folk. If given a band of subordinates that were willing to subject themselves completely to his lead, I think that Lannister would lead them well. I don't think he would take well to having his lead questioned. In summation, I believe Lannister could potentially make a good leader, just not of us.

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

Alrighty, then, I would have recovered 14 of the 28 arrows I shot, plus one of the fire arrows which is now just MW. So I should have 30 regular arrows, 5 arrows +1, 1 mw arrow, and 10 silver arrows +1, just in case anyone needs to know my total inventory.

Why Lanister Would/Woudn't make a good leader

by Cutter.

"Puny man smart, but not strong. He run away lots but, he have a nice sword.  He no like goblins but they took his other sword so maybe that ok."

He whines alot when we decide stuff and don't follow him so maybe we should just do what he wants to keep him from whining. On the other hand he is very lazy, so he would probably just lead us to a tavern to pick up the wenches or something.  Not that thats a bad thing but we do have a young elven ward with a destiny to look after.  I do think he could lead us into all kinds of trouble with bandits and probably angry gamblers or maybe even an angry mob.

Overall I think we have a pretty good thing going with the lead by committee way we are doing it now and a little bit of direction coming from everyone,  while Gawain is our spiritual leader.

alright so being at the store 3 days of the week not my cup of tea, but i still love you scott. so i don't think i will be coming to play on wednesday. but since i am all about the bonus goods, here goes.

Lannister the anti-leader. Good leaders are the type that no matter how they themselves are feeling with show a good example to their followers. Not wanting to take advantage of his talents for searching and finding ways to unlock doors, also makes him a bad leader. regardless of his current state of bodily health we have healers there to make it better. so would lannister make a good leader, in my opinion that is a resounding NO. i know that nymagus wouldn't make a good leader either. nothing against lannister just he hasn't shown any leadership potential in the eyes of the not so humble wizard.

while the rest of the fellowship is searching the ruins nymagus will try to find a well fortified reading place to study his books, and scribe some scrolls of fireball. after again being squished, and evading the icy claws of death nymagus will take comfort in a spot of tea, and some quiet reading time.

as for the mouse mini, oh my freaking god, give him a blaster and some grenades and it's rat boy.

Well by my count that's Len, Bach, Nico, and Chris out for D&D on Wednesday. Given that I think we should cancel for this week and perhaps do something else.

As for Thursday we can see who is free and interested but we would need at least half the players.

Lannister Lazenby would make the greatest leader ever for getting us into the most
fubarred situations ever and I am speaking from experience cause that was my title once!
Scott misses by 1 ; Nico used to miss by 1!
Scott misses a few times in succession; Nico did too and also confirmed by critical misses.
Much to the chargin of fellow teammates I would hurt, mayhem or kill my fellow teammates!
I believe Scott has started to have the same luck. Scott was (sorry is) obessed with that
jewelled sword! Nico was obessed with acquiring cotton and oddities to make a sale he knows
not where - sound familiar? I couldn't sell my stuff until Mike took mercy - I hope that Scott
fairs better than my stupid barbarian who was very laughable - so is Lannister.

Although I did purchase a 2 storey anchor - Lannister has yet to dwarf me in that department.
My point here is this. My past character got the group into tons of trouble, fights and action for
good times. But I don't think Len and Bach liked dealing with my major side-bar storey's that
kept us away from our Mission. Lannister would be awesome at this and it would be alot of fun!
But most of our adventures would take us away from our heroic path and down the way of
capitalistic chaos! Actually I have changed my mind...sounds like fun....

Lannister Lanzenby for President!!!! He's got my vote... what about yours....?????

Felix being Felix he wanders to the outskirts of the wood outside the castle.
He searches maddeningly for a curious ribbet, ribbet! (Another good reason
why I wouldn't make a good party leader - I am Nico)

After following the sound a ways in and failing numerous searches I knock
myself senseless from a low hanging tree branch. Before I fade out
I see many a green thing hop before my eye's. I am now dreaming of
the little critters and probably ribbeting in my sleep.

When I come to it is dark - sometime has gone by obviously - I try to
get my bearings. I am unsure of my surroundings and the time of
night that it is. All that I know is that I am surrounded by that
confounded ribbet, ribbet, ribbet... it is everywhere! (I am really using
that perform comedy now - or is it madness!!!) I flail wildly to squash
these accursed frogs.

Yet somthing else awaits in the dark...something I know not what!
Am I even close to the castle...where is Casey and the rest....

The rest I leave in the DM's discretion!

Hey all,

Sorry for being away from the Boards for a few days.  Very busy with work and family business.

So, I am now free on Wednesday to play, so if the only reason Bach was not coming was knowing there would be no game maybe that will change his mind.  Sorry for the late notice, but I only found out today.

I was looking forward to playing minis on Thursday after an extended minis layoff due to work, so that is my position at present.

More to follow on leadership and the like.

Cheers

I can make Dnd now this Wednesday if people like

Unfortunately I am busy for the rest of the week so if not Wednesday
then I would have to pass. I am short on money and time so playing
Wednesday would be a nice way to unwind from work and family
obligations of late. Sorry about Wierd Al Len - not enough $$$$.

Sorry for the confusion guys. But if we have to skip this week that is
ok too cause the end of the school year activities has me strung out.
End of June I can finally let loose with more time and energy.

I come back from my out of town trip Wednesday - poorer but I should
be able to make it to GameKnight for 6 pm no earlier. I should still be
good for $5 - $6 for supper too . I can't wait for pay day now .

Well, since I'm the only one missing now, I guess you guys will be playing on Wednesday. If that is the case, Mike, do you want me to email you the data on Casey or will he simply be absent?
You could send me Casey's info. We could also assume you go back to recover the mules while the others explore the fort.
