Gawain's Recouting of Recent Events:

After we felled the last of the Ogres and bandits we needed to take stock of things.  I healed both Cutter and Felix who were heavily wounded from their battles.  I was not much better off myself after facing the last Ogre.  The last charges from the two healing wands in my care were drained during this time, and Lannister made his usual entrance after combat was complete.  Nymagus went with Casey to scout the area around the tower, and to retrieve Torchy and the animals.

Searching the area we found some copper and silver coins and low value jewelry on the bodies of the bandits and ogres.  Lannister also found a ramp downwards into the earth under the tower covered with a wooden door/plank.  Lannister checked the area for traps and found none.  Cutter downed a potion of some sort and then lifted the cover.  Bells began ringing in the distance underground and Veil dashed down the ramp before anyone could stop him.

Somehow we managed to get the drop on a group of bandits in the room at the bottom of the ramp.  We made short work of them with little damage to our group, although Veil did almost kill us with fire after he threw a torch onto a pile of wooden crates.  Lannister was pretty acrobatic during the battle for man who walks with a limp, but he did his part and it was good to see him engaged.  Fighting the bandits appears to have lit a fire in his belly.

Following a small tunnel out of the room we entered another small chamber.  Rushing along to ensure that the Bless spell I had cast continued to boost our efforts Lannister located the bells that had rung when we entered below ground and he quickly scouted out the only door in the room.  We found it locked, but untrapped.  Setting up flanking postions to the door Lannister worked his magic and opened it, to the commencement of battle again.  We were hard pressed by 4 heavily armoured bandits, 4 more lightly armoured bandits, 2 arcane casters and the bandit leader.  Both Veil and Lannister appeared to recognize the leader, and Veil seemed almost out of control.  We were heavily hammered by spells from the casters, with a fireball affecting most of us right at the start of the battle.  Magic missiles and other spell effects further hurt us before the two wizards were taken down.

In the end we were victorious, but at a high cost.  I had almost fallen, and Cutter and Felix had both been battered yet again.  I felled the final bandit after the leader fell, but that would not satisfy Veil.  He insisted that I heal the leader so that Vel could kill him over and over.  I was not going to allow that to happen.  I am quite sure that the bandit leader deserved death for his crimes; the burnt caravans we had seen had convinced me of that, but ongoing death is not fit even for our enemies.

Searching the room we found a further stash of treasure and weapons and armour on the bandits, along with four locked chests.  Lannister searched even further and found a small hollow in the wall that contained two brass keys that allowed us to unlock the chests (and lock the door to the room).  The chests were filled with great treasures that I am sure we will manage to sell for a profit.  Veil found his father's violin (which he insists on calling a fiddle), which seemed to cool him down somewhat.  I must say that his music on the instrument was quite good, although I think the old instrument needs a little more tuning.  As to the rest of my companions, I failed in keeping them temperate.  With some pushing from Lannister, Cutter and Felix claimed one of the ale kegs and drank the lot of it during the evening.  They then spent a further couple of hours relieving themselves on the walls hoping to discover a hidden tunnel or chamber.

After spending the night in the bandit compound we headed off to Urmlaspyr.  Three days on the road brought us to the city.  We located the offices of the IronKeg Consortium and arranged for our reward (of only 20% after Lannister attempted to "increase" our take) to be sent onwards to Shadowdale.

Now we spend time in town deciding what to do next.  I have been working on scribing scrolls for all of our benefit.

OK, sorry.  I forgot one thing in the last post.

We obtained 300 gp from selling weapons and armour taken from bandit and ogre corpses.  200 gp of that has been spent on helping Gawain scribe scrolls, and other expenses around town.

So, Bach, you can add a further 100 gp to party coffers for distribution.

Cheers

I believe that other 100gp went towards some MW Lockpicks for Lanister since he keeps breaking them

Perhaps I'm missing it in looking over the posts, but I only see Nico's, Scott's and Chris's posting for last week. At any rate, I would have to say that this is probably the best I've seen Nico write, but he still scares me. Chris and Scott both put good attention to detail and lots of personal "in character" sentiment. Hard to choose. I'll give them all another read before I leave work and make my final decision when I get to the store.

Ah! Pardon the confusion, seeing it from Felix's notes, I assumed Nico had posted twice.

At any rate, they were all so good. I like Bach's choice for Gawain simply for the bonus of the treasure list. Since the narratives were all so closely ranked, I agree that the bonus list pushes that one over the top.

Way to go Chris!

Shadowdale Light Fellowship Chronicles Part VII – June 27th 2007

First person narrative by Lannister Lazenby

Here we are in the city of Uglybuttford (Urmlaspyr), and there just isn’t a good tavern anywhere. We spend a few days re-supplying. I claim a bolt of silk and decide I’m going to get a tailor and make some shirts. I get along nicely with a girl named Feena, who I met in the “Red Harpy” tavern. I get a few good games in and win a tavern called the “Rusty Trollop”, amongst gold and a masterwork mace. We decide to check it out. It’s a small place, 4 seats at the bar, and 2 tables of 2. It’s sandwiched between a tailor shop and a pawn shop (what luck). I go in and order a beer. The bartender’s name is Loc. The beer is somewhat dodgy. Turns out I’m the 8th owner this year. There is a cellar with a secret door leading to a 10x10 room. Hmmm….the possibilities…..

Rumours abound, Gawain hears about a cult of Moander, they despoils things. They passed through the area and was heading toward Shadowdale. Some Halfling has been following Cutter around asking him to leave our group and join the gladiatorial arena. I heard about the Duchess Malroy, who had jewels stolen and was offering a reward for their return. There are city guards going around asking questions. They come over and start asking Gawain questions. Town guard Albec, asks a bunch of questions. His only lead is some-one who came to town to purchase lock-picks. I tell him about our travels. He wants me to go down-town for more questions. Gawain tries to convince them that it is unnecessary to do so. I go with them.

At the guard headquarters, the watch captain Vaneth, They grill me a bunch, then search me and find a jeweled necklace. I’ve never seen it before. They take all my stuff and escort me to a small 5x5 cell. “It’s not my fault! It must have been Feena from the Red Harpy. She was wearing my cloak…..” Gawain takes it upon himself to be my lawyer. I tell him I didn’t do it. I did nothing but tell the truth. “Hey, what would Lathander do?” He goes off to find the rest of the group to help me out.

(Notes when Lannister is unable to report on the action: Felix is questioned and doesn’t give them a very good impression of me. Gawain does a better job. He tells them I’m honest, but doesn’t elaborate. The guard’s line of questioning does a very good job of entrapping Lannister. Veil tells them I’m honest. He also says Lannister is capable of theft. Nymagus says “He’s a no good dirty thief!” He has been avoiding Lannister over the last few days. He does say that Lannister couldn’t do the robbery as he is too incapable of doing it. Casey says he hasn’t known Lannister long enough. He’s obsessive (had a jeweled sword stolen and won’t let up about it), doesn’t like goblins, he’s lazy. He says Lannister couldn’t do the job because he keeps breaking lockpicks. He might have with unlimited time, with no-one around to hear his swearing. Thagnor says I leant him some beer. He also says Lannister has his own priorties, like going above ground where it is safe.
The group meets back at the Rusty Trollop to compare notes, Gawain likes the incompetence angle. They debate what to do.)

Gawain comes back to say that Casey and Nymagus want me to draw up a will. A will! What kind of vote of confidence is that? I relate who I played cards with. A one eyed dwarf, sea captain with a peg leg, and a tall thin human with a curly pencil mustache and a red shirt (who I won the bar from). I tell him that I only met Feena after the card game. He says I shouldn’t try to break out (yet). Meanwhile, the gallows are being assembled outside. A quill and ink are brought so I can write my last will. Sigh….

(Casey and Nymagus are busy cleaning up the bar, buying proper cups and booze, and generally improving the place. Felix is trying to stay away. Gawain goes back and says they should check out the Red Harpy to see if they could find any of the people that Lannister was playing cards with. Nymagus sweeps into the Red Harpy and buys drinks for everyone. Gawain and Felix go there earlier and stake out a corner table. The thin pencil mustache guy approaches Nymagus and invites him to a game of chance (Three Dragon Ante). There is no sign of Feena. Veil plays for the bar. Thagnor stays at the Rusty Trollop. Nymagus plays with mustache guy (Ullbeck) until late in the morning. Nymagus says the cards are getting cold, and needs the warmth of a woman to keep him warm. He hints at a tall raven haired busty type. Ullbeck mentions a girl like that with the guy (Lannister) he was playing last night. Nymagus talks some more with him and finds out about a high takes game in the nobles district, and leaves (Veil also) to seek out the “Golden Feather”. He buys the nobles some port, and engages them in conversation. The name Lannister does come up, and Nymagus tries to associate his name with incompetence. )

The next day I get my gruel, complete with chunky bits. Mmmm…bits….. I look around for secret doors, and there are none. The window is too small for me to fit through. I make friends with a spider I share my cell with. Gawin and Felix come to visit, but they didn’t bring me a lock-pick cake. They bring me up to date on the progress. I request to meet this Duchess Malroy. Maybe I can appeal to her better nature. Felix says he has been praying for me. I try to appeal to Gawains faith, maybe the church elder can help.

Gawain heads back to the Rusty Trollop to confer with the rest of the group. He heads off to the church. Rumours on the street say this incompetent thief Lannister Lazenby robbed the Duchess, and got chased and caught by 100 guards only by being clumsy. The church elders think that all evidence points to Lannisters guilt. Gawain convinces him to talk to the guards about Lannisters case.

Nymagus deals with one of the nobles in regards to silk. He says to him if he has any dealing with the tailor next to the Rusty Trollop to jack up the price. Meanwhile business is way up at the Trollop. Veil starts singing songs about the capture of Lannister Lazenby. Nymagus goes to see a Gnome called Elmore, a locksmith. They discuss a book of his with a cold trap on it. They talk about old coins and display cases, cabinets and shelving, and a buxom raven haired woman. She passed here 3 days ago. Hmmm…the plot thickens….

Felix heads off to see the watch captain. He asks about other suspects and evidence. He asks to see Lannister.

Felix comes to see me. I introduce him to my spider friend. He says he’s working on getting me a beer, but hasn’t been able to yet. I fill him in on more details: The night of the robbery I was at the Blue Pawn, which is 3 blocks from the noble’s district. I played cards until 1:00, then I retired to a room with one of the ladies there. I didn’t get her name though. I request that the group changes the name of the Rusty Trollop to Lannister’s Trollop. He says he’ll see what he can do.

When Felix gets to the group, they say the name is fine as it is. They do investigate the Blue Pawn. Gawain finds the girl Lannister was with that night (Joemanda). She says Lannister passed out too early for her tastes. She will swear an affidavit swearing Lannister was with her until 1:00 am, where he passed out (drunk), further evidence as to Lannister’s innocence. Based on this new evidence the guards go out and ask more questions. Another day passes and there is no progress made to declare Lannister innocent.

Nymagus is wheeling and dealing in trade goods, wheat, shipping space, and so on. He tries to get the Duchess involved. The group finds out that the Feena isn’t in the city. She was heading west at last sight. About 50,000 gp worth of gems were stolen, and the guards feel that Lannister has hidden them somewhere in the city. There is a 5000 gp reward offered by the Duchess for the recovery of her gems. Rumours also get around that Lannister seduced the Duchess to get access to her gems.

I ask the guards for my favourite cup. “It has sentimental value” I say. What I really need is a beer. I share some with my spider friend. So my trial is coming up soon. I have a bad feeling about this….

Oh, and on a totally separate topic (and thus a separate post) ...

I take it that my prize for winning the reporting battle for the previous session was acting as Lannister's defence lawyer this session?

Interesting approach I am sure.

My bad for not relating the prize the other night, having gotten lost in all the bacon and shenanigans....

Nymagus, Casey, and Gawain come into possession of a matched set of purple crystal charms that bind themselves to you. Once per day they allow the three of you to have a 5 minute telepathic conversation with each other so long as you are within line of site.

Bonus XP time.

Everyone who posts their musings on the last session will earn 250 XP. The player with the best entry judged by Rob gets double XP.

If you don't want to post on the past session other topics may include a business model for the Rusty Trollop, Lannister's legal defense strategy, Felix's daring jailbreak plan, the Ballad of Lannister Lazenby, or Lannister's prison journal. If you post on any of those topics related to your characters special bonuses will be awarded.

Felix's Jailbreak strategy?

Drunken Felix:  We need to get my good drinking buddy out a the slammer before he gets hung or something.

Drunken Felix then orders several more tankards of ale and passes out

Time passes.....

Sober, hungover Felix:  Zounds!! What was I thinking! I can't break Lanister out of jail, if I did I would lose my paladin powers.

It ain't so bad if you watch us die, ... but then hang by the gallows shortly thereafter...
not really that good!

Nico is thinkin George's cause I watched you eat it last week...I got paid finally...it has to last!
But George's I can pay for... Mhhhmmmm

Felix's Plan to Bust out Lannister (to face that vile beholder thingy)

Idzy - Felix has determined that the whole town is doing Lannister an injustice...
So absolute Paladin Power is virtuous...maybe! 250 XP here I come.

Felix is running about the town trying to procure items for his grand plan!
A bag of holding could not be found anywhere. He seeks now a scroll of...
something good...that cannot be found...nay...no teleportation or the like!

Felix does find some sturdy horse hair rope...never ye mind where I got it from
well ok...it came from a horse...shuuusshh. It is thick and long bout 200 feet.

I am now shopping for some acid...Zounds it probably doesnot come cheap! Now
I need me a beast of burden.....where art thou mule, donkey or even monkey!!!
I need about 3 beasts of burden...4 if doth count me self! Perhaps I should
finally role up my noble stead...could i have a rhino/elephant in this plan...
probably not native to this land!

Now surprisingly or not... this plan does involve a few tankards and kegs of ale!
Perhaps that bar is willing to part with them...it is a good cause you know...fair
warning you will be an accessory to something. Better change the kegs to vats of
ale...Lannister may need some

I will also need a free roaming chicken and a greased pig as distractions....or something
else...we can cook them after in celebration...or offer them in scrafice to either
Lannister's Gods or some deity that chooseth to be Plan B.

That potion of blur I found last session will be used as well. So now, does anyone dare
think like me...? What could I possibly do with all this stuff. I am waiting on the DM
to see what I finally procured. It is late in the postings so if I win the extra 250 XP
I am willing to give to whoever can figure out what the hell I am gonna do with all this
stuff! No substitutions allowed but plenty of additions are welcome!!!

Zounds we will free Lannister yet! Or have one crazy going away party!

I am off work tomorrow so I will be watching the boards before busing down!

Pounce goes the cat!!! Felix the Flounder strikes!
All heed the Drunken Paladin who performs comedy!!!

Lannister's Legal Defence

Well, is there really one to be had?

We have tried honesty, with no results.

We tried making Lannister out to be an incompetent rogue - that resulted in him becoming larger than life in the imagination of the populace (and one suspects the guard).

We tried tracking down the lady who framed him - but she was gone.

We have a civic and noble culture who believe that adventurers are the lowest of the low and not worthy of any due consideration under that law.  Basically, guilty upon arrest.

So, where does that leave us?

Well, now that I can cast 4th level spells (and have 4th level domain spells), I can reincarnate Lannister after he is executed ... although that might bring him back as a goblin.

What say people?

Cheers

Summation after further thought ...

I think we might just be forced to:

1) Watch Lannister die.

2) Execute a massive jailbreak operation and thus have to run cross-country until out of Sembia.

Cheers

Escape Plan - Ideas?

1)  We will need to be subtle if we want to rescue Lannister.  Big and flashy will not work.

2)  I think Gaseous Form is a likely aid here, although Obscuring Mist might be helpful as well.

3)  We could consider body switch for Lannister.  Can we find anyone to substitute for him in prison?  I was almost thinking two potions of Gaseous Form (or spells), one to get into the cell to make the switch and another to get Lannister out.  This would need to be paired with a distraction of some sort as well.

Cheers

Smack dab in the middle

Yeah, I'm not too sure how many options we have here. I'm liking the Gaseous Form idea. I'm thinking that we can do a bait and switch. We find some passed out drunk who looks as much like Lannister as possible. Where you ask? At our bar, after all the ale he could drink! At any rate, we bring said drunk under Lannister's window. We strip down the drunk and pass the clothes through the window to Lannister who passes out his prison garb. We then get a potion of Gaseous Form in to Lannister so he can get out. At this point, some sort of explosion or something could destroy the bars in the window. I'm not the alchemist or mage, so don't ask how. We get Lannister the heck out of there. The guards come running, find Lannister knocked out from his fall from the window, or perhaps the effects of the explosion, but obviously not drunk since he's been prestidigitated to smell like a typical, sober inmate. We bring Lannister back to the bar and hide him in the secret room. The guard likely kills off the drunk or prepares him for hanging early in the morn. Since he'll be sooo hung over, he won't know what's going on. After the death, we go in to try to claim the body and effects. We give the effects back to Lannister and take the body out of town where we reincarnate him - perhaps on to better things. Now that the bar has been sufficiently improved, we sell it off (hopefully for a tidy profit), and we make our way out of town. We still tell the guard that they had the wrong man and that they let the woman get away. If at all possible, we track down the woman.

That's my outline. Any ideas to fill out the parts I'm not too clear on would be appreciated.

I still think that there's time to investigate at the house. The fact that Lannister owns so many picks could help to back up the incompetence story angle. I'm sure no broken picks were found at the house, nor were any locks damaged beyond repair - as the real thief appears to have been a pro. Typically, the most wealthy tend to have more guards and better locks/traps than local small town garrisons. The fact that Lannister has not escaped from the prison may indicate that he is not an able thief. I would like to make an appeal to the local lord/mayor or whatever. Even if some jewellery has been stolen, surely there is some perilous mission that they need done but have no one brave enough to do. This is, after all, D&D! Since the mission would be considered suicide, the net effect would be the same as killing him directly.

Regardless of the outcome, we need to track that woman. Either we get the stuff back and clear Lannister's name, or we get the stuff and fence it for some nice stuff of our own.

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

One other thing: If a high level priest could be brought in to talk to him and convinced of his innocence, perhaps the indignity of the situation might allow the church to see fit to offer a major discount on a Raise Dead?

One other other thing: If there's an apothecary in town, Nymagus should go get the Romeo juice. Something that makes him look dead to all eyes. When we slip it into his cell and the guards find him dead, we'll come take away the body. Then, Bob's your uncle, he wakes up and we're off.

K, I think I'm done for the night!

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

RhinoHazard,

Just remeber that I have already appealed to the highest level priest of Lathander in the city to help out Lannister with no result as of yet (and not likely to get one based upon the previous conversation where I rolled something like a 29 Diplomacy check).

Cheers
