The Bleak and Frozen North

Marvin, who has only just managed to get his computer situation sorted out to the point where he has internet access, firmly believes that the belt should go to Jars. That might just be because he has taken on the role of the mighty barbarians squire but it seems to him that allowing the slightly lower level character a better chance to smite his foes is better served than giving a few more points of damage to Tharnog. The increase in actual play value is much greater for the entire party should Jars take the belt.

With that in mind I also think that Migwin would be a good alternative to recieve the belt assuming of course that he decides to further his melee combat role instead of leaning more towards the role of the spellcaster. Should Migwin feel that the arcane holds a greater draw for him I think it only fair that he pass the belt along to someone who does not have the inate ability to increase his might.

Man, its a good thing Mavin has a decent balance modifier if I am going to keep straddaling the fence like that.

No clear cut winner yet, perhaps a decision will be made tonight.

And perhaps the debate over the belt will be put on hold while you investigate where Grath disappeared to......

Will our brave and sometimes foolish heroes survive another week on Ilsa de los Tigres de la Muerte....?

Perhaps the belt should go to any surviving fighter, after tonight.

If there is one......

Or perhaps it should go to any surviving party member.

If there is one.....

Migwin’s Diary for Flamerule 9th, in the Year of Wild Magic

We’ve decided to rest and divvy up some of the loot. Hopefully there is something we can use. I grab some potions for back up, Jars is voted to get the Giant strength belt, Cedrith gets a Tomb of Understanding, Beregon got some wands, Marvin a Ring of Jumping, and Tharnog gets a MW sword. We press on, open a door and find a laboratory of some sort. It appears someone was crafting a magical evocation staff. We also find 5000gp worth of spell components, and some blank books. There is a dragon’s heart suspended in green liquid, and it’s still beating. Jars talks about eating it, but the rest of aren’t sure that’s a good idea. There is also a red bottle with the blood of a creature from the elemental plane of fire.

We decide to carry our piles of loot back to the ship, so we can explore further unburdened. When we come up to the top we find the ziggurat surrounded by the islands undead. We scrap that plan and decide to explore further to see if we can determine what is drawing in the zombies. We stash the loot in the Mummy room and get back to exploring. We continue on from the room where Grath was taken. Beregon uses the wand of Detecting secret doors to find a door. It opens to a shaft 100 feet deep. Tharnog is lowered down the shaft and he hears some kind of banging. At the bottom there is a recessed panel with gold inlays and buttons. Once we are all down, Tharnog pushes one of the buttons. The floor suddenly and swiftly rises to the top of the shaft. I try to brace it with my spear. It snaps in half and I am squashed up against the ceiling. Everyone else managed to jump free.

After much pondering it seems to be a certain sequence to press to work the platform. Marvin determines after an hour of trying that the sequence is 3-5-1-4-2. It decends. But when he tries to open the door, the platform flies back up. We try 2-4-1-5-3. Jars and I get a stone sarcophagus lid to use as a brace. Marvin figures it out by the time we return and we decend. Opening the door we see a room full of orcs working away at a huge forge.

I suggest we try talking to them, as perhaps they are slaves. If we help to free them, maybe they can help us with the zombies outside the ziggurat. If they take heavy casualties, oh well, less for us to deal with later. Marvin does the bluff, but they don’t bite and rush forward to attack. I summoned the Strength of the Bull, and buffed up Tharnog before the encounter so we are ready for them. I strike one with my sword. Jars and Tharnog cleave through them mightily. I use burning hands on a cluster of them. Beregon blasts them with web and fireball. I zap one with Shocking Grasp and throw his smoldering corpse into the mass of orcs. My second attempt gets delayed a round.

We win the fight and go about searching the room. The orcs were forging weapons, particularly cold iron longswords. They have 16 master work hammers also. There is definitely more evidence of the tigermen preparing for some upcoming battle. We just don’t know where or when. Jars collects orc parts (nads).

There is a magically trapped door at the far end of the chamber. Marvin disarms it. Jars opens it and is furiously attacked by a huge orc. I rage and dive in with my greatsword. Tharnog chops away also, followed by magic missles from Beregon. Cedrith comes to Jars aide. Jars delivers the death blow and chops him to little bits. In the room beyond is a female orc concubine. Jars slaps here around and points to the corner of the room. The room contains a chest and a pile of hides. There is also a control panel on the wall similar to the elevator. The loot collected includes and Blackened Axe – Human Bane, given to Tharnog. We found Evil Bear armor of Gruumsh, which we through into the forge to destroy. The rest goes into party holdings.

XP – To Be Determined.

Perhaps we could have everyone design a new feat for Migwin that allows him to throw opponents for extra damage, and to damage other oponents with one such thrown opponent!

As far as Marvin is concerned the the biggest reason that Grath was missed was having a flanking partner. The first portion of this adventure that we had enemies with vital organs and no chance for Grath to have any fun with them. The main reason that Grath was not missed: the forge room was mighty hot and no ones wants to hang out with a sweaty monkey :)

Tharnogs reason for missing Graths presence is that he was his buddy from before we got this job. It was also missed because I could be the only half greedyness one and missed Graths greedyness.

Happy Belated Birthday Dorge!

Migwin misses Grath's outgoing personality and enthusiasm!  Grath is one of the few individuals who doesn't look upon Migwin as a second rate spell caster or second string fighter.  His advice about embracing my "barbarian" ways and not being judgemental are appreciated by Migwin.  Besides, he like my hawk and doesn't tease it.  His ability to work locks and doors and traps and stuff is surely being missed by all of us.  Our newest trapsmith just isn't cut from the same cloth.  Oh Grath, where are you............

....and the Gorilla dust, no, can't forget about that.....needs me my gorilla dust.......

No worries Migwin, Marvin will get the hang of those traps pretty soon, just a little bit out of his area of expertise. But he is already getting better.

Tales from the previous Chronicler Grath Jan. 2nd, 2008 Session 14

Dead Dwarf Walking Part 5

Grath sighs heavily ... offers his Masterwork Cutlass (+1) with the 200 GP.
The High Executioner is satisfied and accepts Grath's offer. Grath asks how
Tharnog's life will be spared - the Executioner gives no details other than someone
should be waiting in a row boat close to the gallows and dock. Tharnog will not
be burned to ashes in a barrel as custom; but, he will be dumped into the drink.
Grath presses his luck by showing off his Roguish attire under his long cloak. He
tries to impress that should the Execution not go as planned his employer and
his ... company ... would be extremely displeased. The Executioner does not
seem impressed ... and wonders if he pushed his luck too much. Grath returns
to the Blue Hippocampus.

Dusk has arrived and our Party looks on in horror as the crowds harrass ...
The Dead Dwarf Walking! Tharnog is escorted in irons by guard through
the nearly roiting crowds throwing vegetables! Migwin and Jars in the crowd too!
They stand ready with their an empty sack and full sack of rotten food! To blend
in they start their rescue plan incase Grath's efforts were in vain.

Migwin and Jars throw tomatoes and rotten potatoes at Tharnog and incite the
crowd to high rage against The Dead Dwarf Walking! Somehow Tharnog
is tripped (Jars???) and gets a brick in the face (Migwin???) Tharnog growls in
contempt and anger ... vowing to start a fight if he could. That's our Tharnog!
Migwin and Jars stand ready to do ... The Plan and the Switch if necessary!
Thagnor is strung up ... but the Executioner has slipped him something to drink
...nearly spitting out the foul bitter taste!

THAGNOR IS HUNG ... DEAD! DUSK ... HAS COME!

The crowd goes wild with glee! Is Migwin and Jars celebrating too? Naw!
The dead Dwarf is sealed into a barrel and dropped over the dock into the drink.
Grath dives into the water and swims deep ... and is able to drag it up. Opening
the Barrel filled with water ... Grath is panicked as he believes Thagnor has
drowned! Grath unsuccessfully tries to revive his companion ... to no avail.

Rowing back to The Blue Hippocampus Grath is frantic to save Thagnor if
possible ... but the High Executioner did do what he promised didn't he? The
Dwarf was not burned to ashes. Grath skillfully climbs the ship with Thagnor and
Cedrith is able to heal him ... and HE LIVES!!! Migwin and Jars return to the
ship within the next few minutes. Capt. Salty Pete sets sail nearly a half hour
after the hanging as logged with the Dock Master - No one should be supicious!

We have set out to Sea having done a near impossible rescue that no one dreamed
possible. The company is overjoyed to have their fellow at arms back - minus his
armour and weapons - but alive nonetheless! No one will miss a dead dwarf and a
monkey that no one saw. We have escaped Scott free ! But so has the Adder!

Actually Scott was with us! finally i have finished this part 5, were you in suspense???

Stop monkeying around - thats my job!!!

Hello,

Busy week for me, so not as much posting.

I am OK with pizza or chinese this coming week.  We are down Rob though, are we not?

As to why Beregon missed Grath ...

Well, Beregon likes making lists, so here is another list:

1)  Grath and his banana stories were funny.

2)  Grath appears to have been kidnapped into slavery, something that Beregon wishes on no intelligent being.

3)  Grath does do his bit in combat.

4)  Grath had learned to curb his greedy habits, and was therefore focused more on the group, rather than wealth.

5)  Grath had provided Beregon with proof that his brother Elren was alive (albeit not well) and was ready to help out even more in that quest.

6)  Beregon had grown used to the Hadozee's smell, which was much nicer than the smell of sweaty dwarf or blood bathing barbarian.

7)  Grath would actually listen to a plan before battle unlike sweaty dwarfs or blood bathed barbarians.

8)  Grath only ate bananas and exotic fruit, not hearts or other unmentionable anatomical parts from foes.

9)  Grath did not attempt to take female orcs as concubines/slaves.

10)  Beregon enjoyed the occassional monkey joke at Grath's expense when he was around, now that Grath is gone they are not funny.

Cheers

Hopefully there is still time to get in on the posting bonus.Â

Cedrith misses Grath, for many reasons, but mostly because he was the only one to take his words of wisdom about not getting into too much trouble seriously.  Hopefully soon we will beable to start searching for our lost friend.

Hello all,

Beregon has been spending a bit of time on figuring out the best distribution of loot for the party again.  As we have moved further through the ziggurat we have picked up a few more things which changes our wants and needs.  We have also picked up a bit more coinage, etc. so that increases the haul.  Based upon the latest calculations and a bit of rounding (down I might add) Beregon figures our net worth at present once items are sold isÂ85,300 gp.ÂThis is not including the cold iron longswords, the 1300 lbs of cold iron ingots we discovered, or the spell components and exotic items found in the alchemical lab, as Beregon doubts that we can get it all out of the Ziggurat.  So here is Beregon's latest proposal for distribution/sales/purchases:

Beregon's Treasure Option #5

85,300 gp Total

Salty Pete - 8,000 gp
Mustafa - 1,100 gp
Percy - 1,000 gp
Blue Hippocampus Crew - 1,200 gp (200 gp each for the 6 members at present)

74,000 gp for Party Distribution

1 x Headband of Intellect +2 - 4000 gp (For Beregon, gives him 4 extra spell slots per day which will directly aid the party)
1 x Periapt of Wisdom +2 - 4000 gp (For Cedrith, gives him extra spell slots per day, but Beregon does not know how many)
1 x Gloves of Dexterity +2 - 4000 gp (For Marvin, to increase his skills & abilities)
1 x Goggles of Minute Seeing - 1250 gp (For Marvin, to increase his search checks)

1 x Full Plate Armour +2 - 5,650 gp (For Tharnog, to up his AC) +10 AC, + 1 Dex bonus if possible
1 x Mithral Chain Shirt +2 - 4,100 gp (For Migwin, to up his AC) +6 AC, +6 Max Dex bonus if possible
1 x Mithral Chain Shirt +2 - 4,100 gp (For Cedrith, to up his AC)
+6 AC, +6 Max Dex bonus if possible
1 x Mithral Chain Shirt +2 - 4,100 gp (For Marvin, to up his AC) +6 AC, +6 Max Dex bonus if possible
1 x Heavy Wooden Shield +1 - 1,157 gp (For Cedrith to up his AC) +3 AC

2 x Javelin of Lightning - 3,000 gp (For one of the fighter types, Migwin?)
1 x Composite Longbow +1 (+4 Str) - 2,880 gp (For one of the fighter types, Migwin?)
1 x Quiver of Ehlonna - 1,800 gp (For whomever has the magic bow)

1 x Heward's Handy Haversack - 2,000 gp (For Beregon, so that he can pull out any scroll, wand, potion, etc. needed by the party)
1 x Bag of Holding Type III - 7,400 gp (For Jars to carry lots of treasure in since he is so strong)
6 x Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds - 1,800 gp (1 for each party member, healing is good)
2 x Universal Solvent - 100 gp (1 for Marvin as back up in sticky situations, 1 for Beregon as spare)
1 x Hat of Disguise - 1,800 gp (For Marvin or anyone else who needs it)
1 x Quaal's Feather Token, Bird - 300 gp (For sending messages to Salty Pete in a hurry)
1 x Quaal's Feather Token, Anchor - 50 gp (Perhaps a gift to Salty Pete in case of emergency on the ship)

1 x Creation Funds for 5th level Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds - 3,750 gp (For Cedrith to heal everyone)
4 x Creation Funds for 1st level Wand of Cure Light Wounds - 1,500 gp (For Cedrith to heal everyone)
1 x Creation Funds for 3rd level Wand of Lesser Restoration - 2,250 gp (For Cedrith to use when we get ability damage, which seems to be often)
1 x Creation Funds for 9th level Wand of Magic Missile - 3,375 gp (For Beregon to zap the enemies that threaten us)

2 x Grappling Hook - 2 gp (1 for Migwin, 1 for Jars; useful with all the rope we have)
4 x Sunrod - 8 gp (2 for Marvin, 1 for Cedrith, 1 for Beregon; extra light can be a good thing)
4 x Acid - 40 gp (2 for Marvin, 1 for Cedrith, 1 for Migwin to be used in traps, special circumstances, etc.)
6 x Antitoxin - 300 gp (1 for each party member, adding to saves is important and we seem to be poisoned a great deal)
8 x Tinder Twig - 8 gp (2 for Beregon, 2 for Cedrith, 1 each for Marvin, Jars, Migwin and Tharnog; Fire can be helpful)
1 x MW Thieves Tools - 100 gp (For Marvin, to aid in his work on doors & traps)
2 x Thunderstone - 60 gp (1 for Marvin, 1 for Migwin; useful against spellcasters)
10 x Alchemist's Fire - 200 gp (2 for Beregon, 2 for Cedrith, 2 for Marvin, 2 for Migwin, 1 for Jars, 1 for Tharnog; useful in all sorts of circumstances)

9,000 gp (1,500 gp each for party members to spend as they like)

Extra Item Ideas - As we do have 9,000 gp "left over" as individual allocations we could pool our resources for a few more items that would benefit everyone.  Some things to think about would be:

Sap +1 - 2,301 gp
Short Bow +1 - 2,301 gp
Adding Ghost Touch to a +1 Weapon - 6,000 gp
Bag of Holding Type I - 2,500 gp
Bag of Holding Type II - 5,000 gp
Ring of Protection +1 - 2,000 gp
Cloak of Resistance +2 - 4,000 gp
Creation of 8th level Wand of Fireballs - 9,000 gp
Creation of 5th level Wand of Fireballs - 5,625 gp
Creation of 5th level Wand of Lightning Bolt - 5,625 gp

Obviously, all of this is subjective until we get off the island of the murderous/deadly tigers.

Cheers

Hopefully there is still time to get in on the posting bonus.Â

Cedrith misses Grath, for many reasons, but mostly because he was the only one to take his words of wisdom about not getting into too much trouble seriously.  Hopefully soon we will beable to start searching for our lost friend.
Idzy,

Welcome back and congratulations again on the wedding.

Does this mean we see you out on Wednesday?

Cheers

Well I think that is everyones reasons why they missed Grath; except for Migwin I think?
It is only 8:00 p.m. so Scott still has some time yet - plus I should scroll through and see
if Scott's is there somewhere.

Congrats to you and Suzanne, Rob. I hope it was a beautifull ceremony and ... a really
fun honeymoon! As to your reason you missed Grath ... I believe your well within
the deadline unless Mike says otherwise!

I will wait and post the winner shortly after giving Scott more time for the posting!
They are all great guys! I feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside ... and the outside!

Stop monkeying around - thats my job!!!
