In terms of future schedules, I would like a non-sanctioned, ordinary 200 pt tournament every month. Given that 200 pts is what the figures are mostly designed for, I'd like to have more than 4 opportunities between sets to try things out.

Congradulations on 3000 posts.

There are 4 Sanctioned 200 point games set for May and June.

Hello,

Looking forward to this Thursday for minis.  What is on the schedule again, I have lost my paper copy.

OK, just checked the website.  A 200 pt Sanctioned game.

As to the May/June schedules.  I will echo Richard and suggest that we run a couple of 200 pt skirmishes with no theme that are unsanctioned.  I too would like the chance to experiment with a couple of off kilter warbands without having to worry as much about rankings.  Being able to dice off for set up in non-sanctioned events does tend to create some interesting match ups.

Cheers

Oh yeah.  And I just realized that I really need to post more in order to catch up to Richard.  There was a time once when I was far ahead of him in posts.

There were one or two slots left empty where we can put in 200 point non-sanctioned games.

Here's what I like about the theme games. It gives people a reason to use figures they might not normally play. If we all have to have uniques, or dragons, or elementals, or something else, I think it helps get the creative juices flowing. It gets people thinking of new uses for old figures, and combos they might not play vs tier 1 bands.

It also tends to get us away from someone constantly playing the same uberpowerful combo that only they can play because their collection is bigger. There was a point where ther were only so many combos (like when there was only 4 sets or so) where certain factions didn't have a chance. Granted that has changed now that there are so many more choices. But I think if you look at what is being played competitively, those bands dominate in our small forum as well.

Be that as it may, I'll review the schedule, and consult with my executive schedule maker (MJ), and see if we can squeeze a couple of 200 point non-sanctioned events out of the schedule.

Well we can just cut the space I set aside for one of Tyler's ideas.

There is a Team Night again on the schedule which alows you to play a 200 point non-themed band. I'm sure there's something to keep everyone happy.

Of course Thursdays are pretty booked up with the sanctioned events and the new league format so any 200 point non-sanctioned events would likely end up on a Saturdays.

Hello,

As long as it is being thought about, no complaints from me.

While I like the idea of theme games, I think that too many of them are just as limiting as simply running all 200 pt Sanctioned skirmishes.

People with large collections like myself have no problem throwing a band together (except forthe time factor with work and all), but those with smaller collections may not have the right kind of pieces depending on the theme.

One example there is the Faction Focus based upon last name.  If my name was linked to CE, but I only collect CG or LE, etc., then I am not likely to show up.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Hello,

One thing I forgot to add:

With the newer sets there is enough complexity in the game as is, without adding new conditions in theme games.

I will disagree, and not for the first time.

Getting the creative juices flowing is no problem. Having 4 200 pt tournaments (one a month) means that I have warband ideas stacked up from here so far back I can't see the end of the line. Ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, but not by all that much.

Nobody around here cares about tier one bands, so bringing something they wouldn't bring to a normal tournament doesn't really have any affect. That was a poorly worded sentence, but whatever. The "new uses for old figures" is somewhat contradictory with preventing people with bigger collections from having an advantage. Newer players (and/or those with smaller collections) aren't going to have the old figures to use anyway, and if their collection is small, they might not even have enough of the thematic pieces to any warband, never mind a "good" one. All in all, I'm happy to lend pieces to people, although I do have to know in advance since I come straight from university on thursdays.

You said it yourself "when only 4 sets..". We're way beyond 4 sets now, and how often do you see people here playing the same thing over and over again? Other than maybe the ubiquitous couatl in a lotta LG warbands, you can see almost anything at a sanctioned tournament.

Anyway, that's the end of my wandering rant.

I don't know of anyone specificaly only collection certain factions locally except Dan Palmer, and when was the last time we saw him around? The idea was to get people to perhaps play a faction they might not normaly consider. Besides, if you don't have the minis to make a warband it's a good excuse to come on here and ask if you can borrow.

That being said the ability of people with smaller collections, newer players, and similar factors are all taken into account when I try devising theme events. In the future there will probably be less mini type themed events as they seem to be the ones some people have trouble making the requirements for.

Well the simplest answer might be to do something I was considering anyway, holding off on starting the new League until fall as attendance tends to get a little spotty over the summer anyway.

So we can replace those sessions with 200 point non-sanctioned games making at least 4 non-themed 200 point tournaments a month. Is that enough for you guys?

I thought there was sufficient interest to do another league. Although May June July might see attendance taper towards the middle or end. Maybe league would help that out somewhat.

I'd say lets take a poll, but there may only be 4 of us here online.......

I think the interest for the League is there but those July-August schedules tend to get a little hit and miss and I wouldn't want people dropping in the standings because they're up at the lake with the family. I'm thinking perhaps the optimal time to start a new league might be in September.

That being said perhaps we can take an informal poll on Thursday hoping most of those interested will be in attendance.

Assuming we do go ahead with the League we'll have to start taking enrollment soon so everyone can get their commanders set.

Forgive me for interupting the minis talk for a moment, but I'm curious if there's anyone kicking around here interested in participating in a superheroes RPG? Specifically Mutants & Masterminds 2nd edition.

It's something I've been wanting to run for a while now and, for one reason or the other, it hasn't been possible with my normal weekly group.

For those unfamilar with M&M, it's a pretty stright forward system derived from your standard d20 games, but stripped down a bit, and very flexible. I'd almost be tempted to use it for everything from Sword & Sorcery games to Sci-Fi.

So yeah, just testing the waters, seeing if there'd be any intrest.

Cheers,
Kyle

Superhero RPG has been in my books to run for a while now. I use to play Marvel Super Heroes on a pretty equal basis with D&D back in the day.

Of the 5 or so Superhero games I've played I probably cared for M&M the least, perhaps 2nd edition improved things. I'd be interested as it's something I was planning to put together as a fill in for my current D&D should some weeks not work out for player availability or just to take a break.

Pending being able to fit it into an already busy schedule.

The differance between the differant editions of M&M is similar to that of D&D 3e and D&D 3.5; it's the same game, but an obvious improvment.

Also in honour of the holiday.

Yay, it's only one week until the big event! The Crushing Catacombs tournament is soon upon us. A game where the tide of battle can change in an instant!
While playtesting it, I have personally had 2 Wemic Barbarians (separate tests), a Lich Necromancer, a Bralani, and a Khumat (his back end was crushed since he couldn't move away enough spaces).
I can't wait.

7 people out for minis tonight, Jay, Jory, Andrew, Richard, Chris L, Garret, and myself. Richard won so nothing new there.

The repaint is pretty nice this month.

After talking things over a bit I think the League will go ahead starting in May. The interest seems to be there. I've decided that 15 points is to big a penalty for missing a session so it'll be 5 instead, at most that should drop you one rank in the ladder but we'll see how it plays out.

Here's a little simulation of how the league will play out and hopefully that will clear some things up for people.

Starting Rankings.

#1 George 100 points
#2 Fred 95 points
#3 Joe 90 points
#4 Steve 85 points
#5 Earl 80 points
#6 Brenda 75 points
#7 Lenny 70 points
#8 Homer 65 points
#9 Karl 60 points
#10 Leon 55 points

Let's say Earl and Karl can't make this session and they will lose 5 points. Players are paired up to the player nearest to them in the rankings. So in round 1 of this tournament it's #1 George vs #2 Fred, #3 Joe vs #4 Steve, #6 Brenda vs #7 Lenny, and #8 Homer vs #10 Leon.

The winners from this round are #2 Fred, #3 Joe, #6 Brenda, and #10 Leon. Fred beat someone ranked 1 step above him so he gains 10 points and with the loss George looses the same amount. Joe and Brenda beat opponents ranked below them so there is no point change for any of the players involved in those games. Leon beat a player 2 ranks above him so he gains 15 points while Homer loses 15 points.

Applying the new results including the no shows here would be the adjusted standings for round 2. In the case of any ties in points the player with the previous higher ranking wins.

#1 Fred 105 points
#2 George 90 points
#3 Joe 90 points
#4 Steve 85 points
#5 Earl 75 points
#6 Brenda 75 points
#7 Lenny 70 points
#8 Leon 70 points
#9 Karl 55 points
#10 Homer 50 points

Based on that for the 2nd round winners are placed with the nearest ranked other winner, the same with the losers so the matches are #1 Fred vs #3 Joe, #6 Brenda vs #8 Leon, #2 George vs #4 Steve, and #7 Lenny vs #10 Homer.

Let's say the winners from this round are #3 Joe, #6 Brenda, #2 George, and #10 Homer. Joe beat a player 2 above him so he gets 15 points and Fred loses the same amount, Brenda Leon George and Steve don't change, and Homer beat someone ranked 3 places above him so he gains 20 points and Lenny loses 20.

The readjusted standings would be:

#1 Joe 105 points
#2 Fred 90 points
#3 George 90 points
#4 Steve 85 points
#5 Earl 75 points
#6 Brenda 75 points
#7 Leon 70 points
#8 Homer 70 points
#9 Karl 55 points
#10 Lenny 50 points

Round 3 pairings would be the 2 2-0's #1 Joe vs #6 Brenda, 1-1's #2 Fred vs #3 George, #7 Leon vs #8 Homer, and the 0-2's #4 Steve vs #10 Lenny.

The Winners from round 3 are #6 Brenda, #2 Fred, #8 Homer, and #4 Steve. Brenda makes a big move as can happen in the third round beating someone ranked 5 slots above her, she gains 30 points and Joe loses 30. Fred and Steve and their opponents don't change, and Homer gains 10 points with Leon losing 10.

The final standings after this week of the League would be:

#1 Brenda 105 points Net change +5 ranks
#2 Fred 90 points Net change 0 ranks
#3 George 90 points Net change -2 ranks
#4 Steve 85 points Net change 0 ranks
#5 Homer 80 points Net change +3 ranks
#6 Joe 75 points Net change -3 ranks
#7 Earl 75 points Net change -2 ranks
#8 Leon 60 points Net change +2 ranks
#9 Karl 55 points Net change 0 ranks
#10 Lenny 50 points Net change - 4 ranks

As you see based on the parings and the wins and losses things can change dramatically, as each round passes the chances for dramatic change increase.

Hopefully this clears up some things for everyone. If you have any questions run them by me.

No, you won't be playing someone twice on the same day. I may have mixed up the pairings somewhere in there. Hey it was late at night.

But it should still give you a general idea of how it will flesh out.

Yeah, you had George and Fred playing round 1 and 3.

What about giving 5 pts if you beat someone ranked below you, 10 pts if you beat someone ranked 1 spot above you, 15 if they're two spots, etc.

Fred should have played Leon in round 3 and Homer vs George.

In theory we can give 5 points for a win against a player lower than you. I wouldn't take away points for a loss to someone higher than you though. The concearn I do have in awarding points this way is it will potentialy cause a lot more ties in point totals, nothing that couldn't be resolved though.

Hello all,

Nice to see six out for the Faction Focus session this afternoon.  We had Bram, Andy, Norm W., Malcolm, Mike J. and me.

I ended up going 3-0 with a LG warband:

Tordek, Dwarf Champion
Couatl
Cleric of Syreth
Devotee of the Silver Flame
Vampire Hunter
Sacred Watcher
Warforged Scout

My first game was against Mike's LG Cormyr themed warband.  I managed to make the vast majority of the saves I needed to against Lightning Bolts.  I eventually managed to eliminate all of Mike's warband.

My second match was against Andy's CE Balor warband.  The rolls went my way again and I first routed the Balor (which rallied) and then went toe to toe and finished him off.  Once the Balor was down I pretty much had the game, although I did lose a few pieces.

My third match was against Bram's LE Beholder warband.  Things were again going my way, with saves against disintegrate and stone to flesh being made by Tordek and Couatl, and then I failed the Stone to Flesh save for Tordek.  Tordek became a statue in the middle of the bloodrock in the Dragon Cliff Lair.  That was my only lost piece, however, as I managed to eliminate the Beholder and the Dark Naga in the next round winning on points once VP were counted.

All in all, three good games for me, and at least two of the three could have gone the other way with poorer rolls on my part.

See everyone else out again this Thursday and perhaps next Saturday.

Cheers

For the hypothetical league, do you pair from the top down or bottom up? If there's an odd number of people who gets the bye essentially?

You are paired to the player who is ranked closest to you in the first round. In the second round the highest ranked winners are paired together and so on. In the third round winners are paired together again, as with losers, 1-1s paired together always trying to match to the closest ranking that haven't played yet together.

As for byes, in the first round we'll dice off the lowest roll gets the bye. In round two all those who lost will dice off and the lowests roll gets the bye, same thing for the 0-2's in round 3.

So it looks like we're going to go ahead with the League, the interest seems to be there. We'll start things up in May and go from there.

This time around I would like to go more than 6 sessions. I think in order for the Ladder to play out fully more game will be needed, plus it gives everyone more opertunities for bragging and trash talk. I'm thinking 10-12 sessions perhaps.

It has been suggested over the summer months that we only do one weeknight session a month to maximize attendance so that's probably the way we will go.

I've also decided not to penalize those who can't attend a given session, their point totals will remain the same. Instead we will reward those attending with a bonus 5 league points at the end of every session.

In the realm of less punishment I won't be taking away extra points for a loss to a player ranked lower than you. The winning player still gets a bonus 5 points for every rank above the first of the player they beat but the loser only loses 10 points maximum.

There seems to be a lot of support for the idea of drafting commanders so we will do that. By my count there are 127 eligible commanders for a 200 point warband now giving you several options. We will use the user rankings at DDShoebox.com to determine the default draft order, should a player not submit their own list of preferences then they will be asigned the first commander on that list not yet taken. Should they not have that commader in their collection they will get to chose one from whoever is left at the first League session.

Those interested in joining the League can declare their interest here or on the sign-up sheet I will be droping by Game Knight after work. When you put your name in you should submit a piece of paper with your top 20 desired commanders in order just to be safe. You may also post your draft order here.

We'll do the draft at the start of may to give everyone a chance to think up warband ideas for their commander.

In addition after every session where a player in attendance has a net loss in ladder ranks they may choose to change their commanders for one not currently active, starting with the lowest ranked player and going up.

The plan is to play the first session with your drafted commanders, keeping track of points as we do for most non-sanctioned tournaments. Those point totals will form the basis for the inital ladder rankings. After that it will be pure wins and losses, ladder rankings used to break ties.

It should be different and fun. Right now nothing is set in stone, the format is still a work in progress so if you have any comments, questions or suggestions let me know.
