| Posted By jacksonm on 08/09/2007 12:00 PM Just wondering if Scott plans on playing in the new campaign and thus force everyone else to play in Paula's group with the killer DM. Garret's already bit the farm over there 4 times.
4 of 5 slots have been filled by Rob, Chris, Nico, and Garret. Leaving 1 remaining which Scott aka Lannister "Am I dead?" Lazenby has dibs on.
I figured that's what you meant, but taking the 5th spot would force others to not, which would be an "and" not an "or". Which is what confused me.

| Oh great and omminous DM can I take the Infused Spellcaster prestige class?
Go to this website and click on prestige classes: http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php Go to the bottom of page 51 for the description and page 135 for the choices.
For clarification, I'm asking because it asks for a BAB of +4. Nallan has +3 and I doubt I'll get to 9th level by the end of the month. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. | I generally don't allow stuff from non-WotC books as a lot of it tends to be unbalanced. Without seeing the full book where that one comes from I'd lean toward no.
Either way you would have to meet all the requirements for it.

| Holidays are keeping me busy, so I haven't checked in before now.
I did express interest in joining the nautical campaign earlier to MJ, as I have done for the past few weeks since it was brought up. I try to avoid talking about new campaigns whilst the present one is going on. It seems people lose their will to live through their current characters.
That being said, I have an idea for a human barbarian/sorceror. He's a young guy 18 or so, and has just passed his right to manhood in the tribe. However, he has been manifesting some sorcerous traits during moments of stress. Missles of light flying out and striking foes, flames erupting from his hands, and other weird sensations of knowing when there is magic about. The past few years he has spent trying to cover it up and deny it. But someone caught on, and challenged him to a duel to prove it. By winning the duel (within a hair of his life), he is spared the death sentence, unfortunately, magic being manifested during said duel also leaves no doubt as to his nature. Being branded a son of demons, he is banished from the tribe, never to return. He has travelled the lands trying to learn more about his ability to use magic. His travels have lead him to an encounter with __________(insert suitable character type here - preferably a mage), who has been trying to teach him how to read, about magic, and life in general away from the plains/desert/forest/jungle (wherever the nearest barbarian tribes are found). Then one day, while they were travelling along the coastline......
Anyway, that the basics. I will write up a more convincing and detailed background when I have some more details. I was hoping to start at level 2 or 3, and give him 1-2 levels of barbarian, and 1-2 of sorceror. As 1st level, I'd have to start as a barbarian, then either take 2nd level as barbarian or sorceror, then 3rd as sorceror, and onwards.
This guy could fill the role of secondary fighter (augmented by magic), and secondary arcane caster (not a good as a straight wizard). Alternately, if this doesn't fit the concept for a nautical campaign, I could be interested in playing a naughtical type druid, swashbucker (one of my favourites), or Cleric of ______(insert sea god here). I'll pass on rogue for a change, and I was hoping to do something with magic, but don't feel like being a full wizard just yet (go Chris!). But I am adaptable and can play anything if need be.
I'll check in late Monday and see what the concensus is (and what the h*** happened to Lannister!)
Cheers!

| Usually I agree with you on discussing new characters while a current campaign is going. In this case we have a set endgame in mind, 4 more sessions and we're done with the current campaign so I think we're okay.
Characters for the new campaign don't have to have a seafaring background, so long as everyone knows the majority of their adventures will take place around that kind of adventure. They will be recruited into the story as regular as adventurers a little coin poor and in need of a new opportunity.

| Seth reached the crest of the last hill on the road from Daerlun to Selgaunt, and paused to gaze down at the bustling merchant city and its harbor filled with ships from all the ports on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Seth wasn't sure what brought him to the coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars, but he felt something pulling him towards the east. Seth had only a vague knowledge of geography, but he new that across the Sea lay the lands of the east, including Aglarond and Thay, constantly at war; Rashamen, famous for her witches, and the beserker warriors that protected them; as well as the Great Dale, which many of the ancestors of the people of the Dalelands originally called home.
Seth wasn't particularly bothered by the fact that he didn't know why he was going wherever it was that he was going to. For much of his life he hadn't understood what pulled him in one direction or another, but nowadays he took solace in the fact that even if he didn't know where he was going, or why he was going there, he did know who directed his steps. Before descending the gently sloping hill, he took the silver holy symbol depicting the wise eyes surrounded by seven shards of light out from under his tunic, and reassured by its presence he entered the city of Selgaunt to see what his destiny held.
The baby cried as Emily crept through the dark forest, fearfully looking back over her shoulder. She could hear the sounds of her pursuers, the harsh shouts as their leader directed them, the clatter of weapons and armor, and the neighing of the riders horses. Emily had escaped with the child from the house of Damon and Alandra Aeslan, where she worked as a housekeeper/maid/cook/baby watcher, when the small group of black clad riders had arrived at the their house a few hours ride east of Arabel. Alandra had recognized one of the riders as a worshipper of Shar and rushed to Seth's room, bundling the no longer sleeping baby in a blanket and thrusting the bundle at Emily telling her to flee while she and Damon sought to delay the Sharites (Sharrans?). Emily tried to quiet the crying child, afraid the noise would alert their pursuers, but looking back she saw that the Sharans were having even more trouble moving through the dense forest in their heavy armor than she was carrying the small child. Eventually, the searchers seemed to give up, evidently feeling that even if they didn't catch up to the pair, nature would finish what they couldn't. Emily found a slightly less uncomfortable tree to lean against as she cradled the baby and wondered what she was going to do next.
Emily awoke the next morning, and it took her a moment to recall where she was and why she was there. Looking at the sleeping baby she realized that she would have to return to the house. Hopefully she'd notice if any of the raiders had remained to keep watch, but she knew she had no chance to save herself and Alandra's baby if she didn't return to the house and gather up some food and clothing. When she arrived at the house, she attempted to spot any remaining raiders, but after waiting and watching for awhile she hadn't seen anyone, so she approached the house. She cautiously approached the ruined front door, expecting an arrow between her shoulders at any second, and once she'd quickly scurried through the door she breathed a sigh of relief. The house had been ransacked, furniture smashed, bedding slashed, walls torn out, it looked like the raiders had been searching for something. Emily quickly gathered up some clothing and food for herself and the baby and placed them in a sack. She also prepared a sling of sorts to carry the baby and free up her hands. As she was taking one last look around the main room, she noticed Alandra's silver holy symbol lying on the floor, mostly hidden under a broken couch. She moved the couch sufficiently to grab the holy symbol and tucked it into the sling with the child.
Seth wandered into the Merry Mermaid Inn and after reserving a room he ordered a plate of spiced potatoes with shredded cheese and bacon bits, along with a mug of ale. After finishing his meal he headed down to the docks, looking to book passage across the Sea to Procampur. Procuring passage was not difficult, and Seth returned to his inn to get some sleep, he would have to wake up early to board the ship on which he'd booked passage.
Leaning against the rail of the ship as it sailed along the coast, Seth thought back to the day when his life had changed. Or one of the days, anyway, he thought wryly to himself.
Seth and his Aunt Emily had been living at the White Hart Inn in Ashabenford for several years. Emily had obtained employment as a cook/maid at the White Hart, and the two lived in a small room above the kitchen. Emily felt they were relatively safe giving the clientale of the White Hart, as well as the fact that the owner of the establishment was a retired adventurer named Holfast Harpenshield. The chances of a band of Sharran assassins tracking them to Mistledale were remote, if they were even still looking for them. And why would they? Emily had not told Seth how his parents had died, managing to turn his attention away from the questions when they arose. She knew she wouldn't be able to carry on that way forever, but telling a young child that his parents had been murdered by an evil cult didn't seem like a good idea to Emily.
There was plenty to keep Seth occupied, and not thinking about his missing parents, during his early years. He certainly wasn't the only young boy in the town, and they played the normal games that children play. Given that his Aunt worked in the kitchens, Seth had excellent access to some of the items in there. A cooking pot made an excellent helmet, while the lid served admirably as a shield. Add a couple of sticks for swords and it was possible to enact all sorts of heroics involving knights in shining armor, evil dragons, and damsels in distress. Even at a young age, people tended to gravitate towards Seth. He had a presence about him that attracted the other children, and even the adults noticed that there was a strong force of will lurking behind his steel gray eyes.
Seth often spent time gazing out the window of their apartment at night, waiting for Emily to return from the nearby inn where she had to clean up the supper dishes. During these nights Seth would look up at the sky and see the sparkling stars in the sky and white moon drifting across the sky. Seth liked the moon. It wasn't nearly as bright as the sun for one thing, and its light seemed somehow more soothing to the young boy. He wondered at all the things that the sun and moon saw as the traveelled from one end of the sky above Faerun to the other. And he wondered if he might ever get a chance to see some of what the moon saw.
It was usually around this time of his daydreaming that Emily would return from the Inn and tuck into bed, and he'd dream about the wonders that his child's imagination could conjure up.
Drifting back to the real world, Seth was somewhat startled to see the moon rising in the east. He had stood at the rail lost in thought for most of the day. And his sore muscles and grumbling tummy confirmed it. He headed down to the galley to grab something to eat.
The next day dawned cloudy and windy, and Seth gazed apprehensively up at the sky when he arrived on deck. As the day progressed the winds got stronger and the cap'n suggested to Seth that he might be better off downstairs in his cramped cabin. Not wanting to get in the way of the sailors Seth returned below decks. After awhile Seth heard a crash from the deck of the ship, and their seemed to be many people running around up there. Seth left his cabin to see what all the commotion was about and came on deck to see that one ropes holding the sail in place had come loose and one of the sailors lay unconscious near the railing with a large bump forming on his head, evidence that he had crashed into the rail, likely when the rope he was trying to secure was yanked out of his hands by the fierce wind. Seth hurried over, and a quick examination showed that the sailor had not suffered any serious injuries. Grasping his holy symbol, Seth drew on the divine energy he carried to cast a minor healing spell, restoring some of the colour to the sailor's face. The act brought back memories of the first time he'd felt his connection to divine magic...
As he grew older, Seth began to help out around the inn himself. He spent time chopping firewood, fetching things, carrrying heavy things (like passed out adventurers), and generally earning his keep around the town.
One day Seth and a friend were chopping trees for firewood in the nearby forest when one of the trees cracked along the trunk, and a part of it fell onto Corwyn. Seth rushed over and found his friend unconscious and bleeding. He tried to stop the bleeding by pressing down with a cloth, but it didn't help much. Seth glanced around in panic, and shouted "Help me, Corwyn's hurt!"
An exasperated female voice said, "Finally, didn't you know that all you had to do was ask me for help?"
Seth felt his hands grow warm, and thought he saw them glow with a soft white light. The bleeding from Corwyn's wounds slowed and stopped, although he remained unconscious. Seth looked around and to his surprise, he and Corwyn were alone.
"Um, h-h-hello?" he asked shakily, "where are you?"
"I'm here, " the same voice replied.
Startled, Seth realized he was hearing the voice in his own head. "Who are you?" Seth asked uncertainly.
"Your parents called me Selune, although others call me by different names," the voice in Seth's head responded.
"S-s-selune!?! A goddess?" Seth's hand darted towards his throat where he wore the silver symbol of the eyes encircled by stars, wondering briefly whether or not it was actually himself that had been struck by the falling tree, and maybe this was all a delusion. After all, gods (or goddesses for that matter) don't typically talk to humans. Especially teenagers.
"No child," Selune's voice chuckled, "this isn't a delusion. As a matter of fact, your mother and I were quite close, she was one of my clerics. It seems that while she carried you around, some of her ability seems to have passed on to you, although it is...different. Our connection is more...innate than the one between Alandra and I."
Seth finished binding the injured sailor's head wound with a piece of clean cloth and told the man that he wouldn't have any lasting effects from the injuries.
"Dizziness for a day or two, and that's about it," he said as he left the crew's cramped quarters as the man lay back on his cot.
Returning to the deck, Seth found that the wind had begun to abate and that the sailors had managed to secure the loose rope back where it was supposed to be. On the horizon he saw a dark smudge, and when one of the sailors noticed him staring at it the sailor informed him it was the city of Procampur and they would be making landfall in a few hours.
Seth returned to his quarters to pack his simple belongings and wondered what Selune had in store for him.

There are various ways of writing backgrounds. Some people prefer to make a point form list of relevant information (parents, siblings, mentors, enemies, friends, reasons for adventuring, goals for adventuring, etc).
Typically I tend to just start in the middle and work my way around from there. As I'm writing one part of a background, something else from earlier in the character's history, or later, comes into focus and it gets added in the appropriate place.
In my opinion, a character background should:
1. Explain how the character gained his skills.
2. Describe the character's family.
3. Give the DM one (or more) ideas for friendly NPCs for the character to interact with.
4. Give the DM one (or more) ideas for unfriendly NPCs for the character to interact with.
5. Explain the character's reasons for being an adventurer (ie why isn't he a blacksmith like most sane dwarves?)
6. Explain the character's motivations for adventuring. This may or may not tie in to #5.
Perhaps those points are obvious, perhaps they aren't.

| When the new campaign picks up the characters will start in the city of Marsember, Cormyr.
http://www.meadehall.org/marsember.shtml
Some of that info might not be up to date but it'll give you a general idea of the area. Your characters just have to have a reason as to why they're in the city and looking for work as an adventurer. They can be from anywhere in the Realms more or less.

| Hello,
For dinner this week George's sounds OK to me. Chinese on the last day also sounds like a plan.
As to the other campaign it would appear:
Garrett - Fighter Rob - Cleric Scott - Barbarian ? Me - Wizard Nico - Rogue?
Sounds like it could work to me, or am I missing something?
Cheers

| A recapping of events ...
Well I am still hoping to give a bit more detail on things, but I have been busy with a bunch of other issues over the weekend (and playing the OotS game).
The long and the short of it is we broke out of prison, throttled some guards (that was actually 2 weeks ago). The we searched around and found a portal that would disintegrate us without the proper password, we passed it by and continued on to another guard room. Killed somemore drow there, then went into another room. Killed some more drow and a huge spider. Found a locked vault with our magic treasure in it, but no mundane gear. We equipped ourselves and rested overnight.
The next day we continued to explore (ignored Veil for the most part, the running joke was we left him in the cell). Found a 100ft ladder downwards, a set of stairs (well actually, again from 2 weeks ago), another portal (this one purple) and a prisoner. The prisoner was a human male who had been tortured with truth drugs. We healed him a little and he mentioned "be'zeele". We used this as a password to jump through the big portal we had just found.
On the other side we found 20 drow and Lannister. Well, actually, we found 20 drow and Lannister's body that was currently serving as some form of receptacle for evil. Right at the start of combat five out of six of us were stunned, and both Blix and I failed to resist a Symbol of Pain. Lannister seemed to be leading the drow and he was flinging spells around left and right. He threw some lightning bolts at us, amongst other spells. Cutter went on a rampage and eventually "killed" Lannister to help put an end to possible death of the rest of us. Nallan went down during the fight, but his necklace of fireballs was helpful in thining out the drow ranks. I ended up spending much of the battle healing myself or others who were injured, although the Mace I had borrowed from Blix was working OK. Darn spell resistance on the drow caused some problems. In the end we killed off all of the drow and paused to lick our wounds (figuratively). A quick search after the end of the battle revealed that Lannister has a long cut down the centre of his chest that was freshly sewn up (not part of the damage Cutter had done to him).
That was where things ended.
What will happen next?
Cheers

Sure. I'm sure Thagnor had groupies, or an ex wife (or two) after all his years on the road.

Nice story. He'd be a great addition to the D&D group, if there was room. Then I can sit at the same table with you and not have to worry about losing (well, good thing you weren't with us now, what with Lannister the Lucky rogue!)

Sounds about right. My goal is to be a multiclass barbarian/sorceror. I was thinking to try using the sorcery to boost up/compliment the barbarian traits. I have some ideas.....

Nice. +2 dex, -2 cha. +4 to climb/balance/Disable Device Gliding (whatever that is) +2 to init +2 to appraise and intimidate (although I'm assuming at least the intimidate bonus is the result of his thugness) And the only downside is you have to look like a monkey. There's no Disable Device bonus, it should only be a +5 total, think I had it down as a dex skill. The initiative appraise and intimidate come from the Thug feat.
Glide (Ex): A hadozee can use its arms-flaps to glide, negating damage from a fall of any height and allow it to travel 20 feet horizontally for every 5 feet of descent. A hadozee glides at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability).
Glide kicks ass.
And Nico can pull off playing a thug ape pirate.
Of course he might have some ideas of his own......

| What the...? I'm starting to wonder about our spellcasters. Apparently they ensured that this portal was safe. Well, whatever happened, I guess we've got to get going. We've awoken in a prison cell of sorts, all of our gear gone. I swear, whoever was responsible for taking my new bow is going to pay! I can barely see anything in this room, but I can hear Cutter. I know he can see better than I can and he's starting to go berserk! This is likely not going to end well. After some crashing and gnashing, he appears to have broken himself free of his chains and destroyed the door to the cell. At least he's calmed down now and not targetting us! I'm not entirely sure what the use of sneaking is, now that Cutter has surely attracted every Drow in the Underdark, but we sneak nonetheless. At an intersection with stairs across, we hear some Drow coming. Just before we jump them, one of them said something about Lannister. Since none of us speak Undercommon, there wasn't much point in taking prisoners. After dispatching the ink-skinned monsters, we equipped ourselves with their weapons and whatever armour we could use. We went down the corridor to the right and happily avoided the portal we found. We came across a room full of Drow that were well aware of our entrance thanks to Cutter's explosive door opening skills. It was a hard fight, but we made it through. After a little healing was spread around, we burst open the next door. Perhaps we should have waited and rested some more. In this room there were plenty more Drow and a giant spider thing. We were well nigh expired by the time we finished these things off, but we prevailed. At the end of the room, we found a treasure room with all of our magical belongings! My bow! My glorious bow! And my magic arrows! All we have left to find down here is our animals and Lannister. After spending the night in the treasure room, we went to leave in the morning. Alas, another portal thing showed up! Thanks to Gawain's abilities, we managed to get out. We realized that the portal would have eaten us up, so we tossed what was left of the spider and the Drow through to clean up a bit. Heading back around to the other corridor, we found a room that had another prisoner in it, a ladder going down 100' and another portal. I went in to check on the prisoner after being assured that the hazy curtain was a magical delousing field. The haggered, frail man that was shackled was not in good health, so I gave him a potion to help revitalize him a bit. It seemed to health, but he still seemed to have a broken mind. I managed to free him from his chains, but as I tried to leave the cell the "delousing field" activated and was actually a magic lock to prevent escape. I have to believe that all these errors from Nallan are going to be made up for by some triumphant action. Otherwise he's more incompetent than any story of Lannister! Once we finally got this fellow out, he started mumbling something about Be'zeezil. Not sure whether that was a person, place or password, we just kept it in mind. I scouted the ladder a bit and realized there was nothing for quite a ways down. I also looked down the stairs and saw a large spider relief carving on a wall that was likely an alarm of sorts. So, we had a portal left. Tossing some fungus through, no gurgling noises were evident, so perhaps this wouldn't eat us. The prisoner had likely heard the Drow saying that Be'zeezil thing using the portal, so we all went through saying that word. We arrived in a room full of Drow and Lannister, looking Drow-esque. All of the others were stunned and hit with symbols of pain, but I had my bow at the ready. Seeing that Lannister was 'in charge' I let loose a full volley, hitting him squarely with 5 out of 6 shots, one of which appeared to hit him severely. That said, he appeared to have some sort of magical protection. Through the fight, we managed to cut down the drow, all of us working well together. Some of us fell, but we protected our numbers well. Cutter and I managed to work together a bit and I was able to step back and start using my bow again. Oh, how I love this bow! In the end, we dropped them all. Lannister was nearly cleaved in twain by Cutter's mighty sword. On the possessed human's chest, however, was a wound that we did not cause. Something had recently been installed or removed and hastily stitched over. I feel that the gem that had possessed him is now in his chest. We think that perhaps taking it out might aid our friend in returning. Alternatively, since it is said that only as much as a finger is required to resurrect him, perhaps we would be best taking a small sample and tossing the rest of him, gem and all, through one of those disintegrating portals! Lannister's character such as it was, perhaps we should ensure the survival of his cherished part, in case the priests get it wrong in putting him back together. I'm not entirely sure that I want to see the gem taken out, in case it affects one of us. That said, I am of little relative use without my bow, so if I hand cutter my weapon I could perhaps try to take out the cursed stone. Even if it does do something to me, surely Gawain and Nallan could stop me before I caused any harm. This is where we are, dilemma after dilemma. Forbes, I trust you are safe. Keep an eye on Geik and don't let those Drow harm you. Defend yourself to the last! | | All hail the mighty Green Rhino! | |

| I awaken chained to a wall with nothing but a loincloth,
Wih a mighty roar I go into a frenzy and break free of the chains and get to work breaking down the door that locks me into the cell. After I calm down I realize the rest of the group is in the same cell as I am and I break their chains too.
We work our way down the hallway in the dark and hear some foot steps and drow voices down the hall, they repeat Lanister's name a few times but that is all we can understand. We take cover as welll as we can in the darkness. My anger grows...
As they pass us I fly into a rage and attack their wizard with the chains still attached to my arms. Somehow Torchy manages to light his loincloth on fire and makes a torch the others also attack and we are able to kill them off.
We scavenged what we could in the way of equipment from the bodies and after a little discussion went down the hall in the direction the drow had come from. We passed a portal that Nallan claimed was dangerous, its hard to tell with him, he might just be making things up. We continue past it and come to a door that Casey and I break down and find a group of Drow and a giant spider.
We attack the spider first as it is taking up the entire entry way eventually we bring it down and Casey slips past it to attack the drow in behind but gets surrounded by several of them, I try to go help but am beset by several myself. I cut them down as quickly as I can and the others are able to get to Casey as he falls from his wounds and we manage to finish them all off.
We are able to scavenge some more gear and find a key. There is a door at the other end of the room but it is protected by purple glow. Gawain uses his divine powers to remove the protections and we find that the key opens the door. Inside we find all of our best equipment but none of the mundane gear or animals.
We baricade ourselves in the room as best we can and rest for the night which is thankfully uneventful, clearly these drow have underestimated us.
The next morning we backtracked to the stairway and Casey scouted down the stairs finding a temple to Lolth. We continued on and found a human prisoner, we tried to help him but he was speaking giberish. Near the cell we found another portal and a 100ft ladder leading down. Nallan and Gawain figured out that some of the giberish the prisoner was saying was the password for the portal by his cell and we all used the password, Be'zeezle to pass trhu.
We appeared in a chamber with a number of drow and Lanister, who was clearly not himself. The drow attacked us almost immediately and most of us were too stunned to fight back for a moment after that the battle is mostly a blur for me as I went into a furious frenzy and slew many of the drow and they tell me that I killed Lanister aswell after the battle I fell unconcious but Gawain was able to revive me. | | Champion of Champions (for all races! even Gnomes ) Reference Thread Winnipeg Gryphon Cavalry Forums
