I agree with Chris, can we nail down this event soon? - I need to make reservations somewhere (the Hyatt seems a little too steep @ $159 for dbl occ. per night)

Sean,

I'll be there, and I was previously on the list, I think. Friday night sounds like it might be the best night. kiddoc and myself and hopefully some others are talking about driving up on Thursday.

It seems like the consensus is to shoot for Friday night.

SO, the next question is what time?

If we start to late, lots of people will want to drop early (there is another big tourney the next morning).

The 200 pt sealed tournament starts at 2:00. My guess is there will be 16 players or less at that event (as there will be many people still involved in the Vintage event!). 16 player would need 4 rounds of swiss, followed by 2 elimination rounds. If we aim to start after swiss, we would need to start probably around 7:30 or so.

So, 7:30? Of course Ian may say it's fine to play, but after League play is over, in which case we have a 9:00 pm start time.

Thoughts?

In case it matters, the 2pm tournament on friday is 200 pt sealed - not Constructed.

I concur with Stephen (AD) and Mark (LR) that a 7:30 start would be nice. The GenCon event was great but it was pretty late and I think some people were struggling by the third game to keep their focus.

I've got the news from Ian about running the MaxMinis tournament at Winter Fantasy. I will give the summary version, and and then attach his actual comments, so that there is no chance of me miscommunicating.

Summary:
We can have the tournament but (as explained by Ian's comments below), it will have to be a normal "convention-run" event. That means we will have to pay a $6 fee to the convention organizers. If we have enough support to go thriugh with this, I can notify Ian and Horseman will put our event on their event signup page.

We can have up to 50 spaces, but it would need to be Saturday night.

To do this, we need to give a firm estimate of the number of attendees in the next few days.

Ian's comments:

"This will sound strange but this is a closed event. This means that only 'we' Wizards of the Coast, run events. We have a special contract with a secondary person who takes care of all our ticket sales etc. He gets a portion of every ticket sold and to have an event running that doesn't fall within our contract will cause problems. Therefore for this to go ahead it would have to be charged at a minimum of $6 per person to ensure he received his payment for all participants. Since it's a closed show there aren't any generic tickets either so you have to have a real ticket.

OK to the positive: I can free up enough seating for 50 players. I can also make available the scoring system so you can sanction and run the tournament IF the financial situation is OK.

Pat you were at the show last year so you'll remember Ratty ran the reception and ticket sales for us. He has a separate contract the help run the show and hence I need to ensure h gets looked after.

Hope this is OK

Ian"

and

"

OK the space I can make available on Saturday evening.

You'd need to give me firm numbers of tickets and I'll inform Ratty of the event addition and he'll add it to the ticket sales system for Winter Fantasy.

Then we're good to go.

Ian"

So, we need to take another count to see how many people still want to do the event under these conditions.

I am still happy to play in it.

mmmm well, Im still for it of course but the potential of being sanctioned seems kind of counter tuitive to the feel of the maxminis event (getting together having fun), I always have fun, but that raises the edge quite a bit etc.

Well, Ian was offering the option to sanction, but we won't be forced to.. I didn't edit his email in any way, so I left that part in there. However, I am strongly opposed to sanctioning the MaxMinis tournament. It does seem to go against the spirit of the event (at least as I have heard it described - I have not participated before). Also, we have 6 other sanctioned events that weekend, so I don't think we need another. That would seem to make the MaxMinis tournament blend into all the other ones.

Thanks for contacting Ian Pat! I'm glad we did... that could have been pretty awkward!

Frankly, my feeling after GenCon was that we might have to make the GenCon event official as well.

I'm definatley still in, and I also agree that Sanctioning isn't necessary. It's about meeting players, and having a good time.

Here are some things I wish I knew:

Why are we limited to Saturday night? As I look at the scheduling grid, the only potential conflict is 3 dragon ante?! Certainly no other Mini's events?

What happens if we are off with our estimate? I'm pretty sure that the 25 people who have singed up are going to be at WF, and will play (or if they don't there are others that might jump in), but will someone be on the tab for unsold slots?

Striderlotr: Can you mark people in the list who have reconfirmed based on the new info?

Count me in as a maybe - I'm not sure yet what my schedule is, and probably won't know for certain until early February, but I'll try to make it.

Oh, and on the sanctioning thing -- I'm pretty sure that if it's sanctioned, I can't play. But I'd be happy to judge.. :)

We're glad to have you aboard again Shoe! I'm also glad that a part of the WotC DDM team will be at WF again. There weren't many attendee's for DDM back in 2004, but those of us who were there (Ghendar, Kiddoc, Striderlotr, myself, and... anyone?!) had a great time talking things up with Rob!

I hope we can get a handle on attendance, as it's pretty clear most people aren't checking the boards right now!

$6 is fine, non-sanctioned would be my preference as well so the WotC folks and others could play.

When they post the event sign-up is there any way to provide some kind of authentication so that the registration is restricted to WotC folks, event staff and MaxMinis users?

I suspect there is not much the event organizer can do easily to authenticate that people signing up for the MaxMini's tournament are MaxMini's members, WotC staff, etc. I'm sure he wouldn't be willing to go to any significant effort to advance that goal, either. Perhaps obscurity is the best way to ensure this. How many people would be willing to pay $6 to enter something called simply MaxMinis' Tournament if they didn't know what MaxMinis is [:)] ? If they do know what it is, they probably qualify.

So far I count 12 confirmations under the new conditions, out of the original 24 who "signed" up. That is a pretty good ratio to achieve during the holiday season. I don't think we need to get every last person accounted for. Once we get 16 confirmations, I propose to tell Ian that we expect between 16-40 entrants. This should be close enough for them to work with, especially since we know they have space for 50. I think they just want assurance that they aren't going to go through this trouble for something like 6 people.

For those out-of-towners who are coming to Winter Fantasy (and for those locals like me, who don’t generally go to Crystal City regularly), I’m working up some information to help you get in, around, and out of WF smoothly.

If you’re flying in from out of town, there is one good option (Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport), and two lesser options (Washington Dulles Airport, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport). Reagan is better because it’s very close to the hotel—the other two are 30 or more miles away, with no real direct routes to the hotel.

Once you’re in town, you need a place to sleep. Hotels are a good option—park benches in late February in DC are not recommended. You have two options for hotels: 1) stay at the Hyatt, or 2) stay somewhere else. I believe the convention rate at the Hyatt is around $159 per night, so you might be able to find something cheaper if you look around. If you aren’t going to stay at the Hyatt, I recommend finding a hotel that’s either within walking distance, or near a Metro subway station (www.metroopensdoors.com). For nearby hotels, I’ll refer you to the Consupport Area map (http://www.consupport.com/winterfantasy2006/areamap.asp), with a minor correction: the Days Inn is now a Radisson hotel.

Driving to the hotel can be chancy, with lots of construction and random traffic jams to tie you up, even on weekends. You wouldn’t want to miss the Vintage Tournament because of an unexpected traffic delay, so give yourself some extra time. If you plan on driving, the hotel offers valet parking for $20 a day. There are several more parking garages about a block or two north, for $10-15 per day. Parking on the street is metered, but free on Sunday.

The closest Metro Station is Crystal City on the Blue and Yellow lines (http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/Stations/station.cfm?station=45). It is roughly 3 blocks (half a mile) north of the Hyatt; about a 10 minute walk. On weekdays, there are buses running between Crystal City Metro Station and the Hyatt: a Metrobus (http://www.wmata.com/timetables/va/10P.pdf), an Arlington Transit bus (http://www.commuterpage.com/art/pdf/ART90ef12-1-04.pdf), and a Fairfax Connector bus (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/pdf/989web.pdf). None of these buses run on the weekend. Also, the Hyatt runs a shuttle every 30 minutes in a loop through Crystal City, including stops at the Crystal City Metro Station and the Airport. Technically, it looks like you can walk from the National Airport Metro Station, but the way doesn’t look as easy, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Good luck getting to the con. Let me know if you need me to provide further details.

Sorry guys have been gone for a few days...

Yes i'm in, and George Estill is in as well - $6 no prob.

Saturday night is fine - don't really matter.

--------------------------------------------------------------

So what's the deal, several people talking about playing league?
Sounds like it may get boring @ this Con if you aren't playing a match... (not much to see?) I've seen Chad, John & others talking about playing, so I might as well join in the herd!!

The convention rate for the hotel says $159 a night. Hyatt's website gives the rate of $209 thursday, 129 friday, and 129 saturday. So the 159 is actually more than the regular rate. Its only $10 but thats $10 worth of minis.

Let me see if I understand the format.

Bring two boosters with you from the listed sets. And bring a item to be added to the prize pool. From there I get a bit unclear. Is it draft or sealed? In either case do all the boosters get tossed into a pile and have them redistributed amongst the participants?

A $6 dollar participation fee will be required in order for the event to run at WF (does not seem to be an issue for anyone)

Do I have the gist of the event correct and can anyone fill in some of the blanks I missed about format?
