Mike!

So glad to see you post that you are interested, and intend to come (along with Jesse and Shoe!).

I've been thinking more and more about the number of rounds and such. Your suggestion has a lot of merrit. I think we can get everyone on board with this....

3 boosters of Harbinger... oh man!

I agree wholeheartedly. I'll be playing in the Grinder and I'll need some rest. (Of course, it'll be nice to play something else for a change.)

By the way, I picked up a Dragoneye booster tonight: I'll be dreaming of Large Red Dragons, Eyes of Gruumsh, and Red Samurais all night.

I'm basically flat broke--I'll be eating nothing but peanut butter for the whole freakin' GenCon. If I bring a small pile of repaints for prizes will that be okay?

Okay, call me John Kerry, but I've changed my mind. I'm back in. For sure. I have some promo minis and spell templates for prizes, and maybe some other stuff, too. I don't know what boosters I'm bringing, but I'm leaning toward Angelfire. I have two copies of the Fane of Lolth that I can bring with me.

That works for me. I think a three round limit and prizes spread out to the 3-0 first and then a smaller choice to the 2-1 players. I'll update the list with the new names.

I don't think I'll be playing in the sealed event that Wizards is doing Thursday as I've not signed up for it and not sure I want to wait in line for more generic tickets. I'll get to the area ahead of time and begin setting up. I'm making some forms so that I can keep track of what everyone brings for prize support. This will make it easier to look at what is available for the winners.

I've decided that I'm going to play. I'll either be coming from the minis hall or the delegate meeting depending on how things happen. I'll bring an Abberations booster and AF booster to draft from. I'll bring a booster and a couple repaints and a promo as prizes. The booster will probably be from AF. It just depends what I can find around town.

Okay, so we're definitely doing FoL maps, but have we decided on the 8 figure limit? I'm all for it.

Are we playing draft or sealed? I'd prefer sealed myself as that has to be quicker. Also, can we change our warband between rounds? I vote "no".

Chattan: This is going to be a draft event. Yes it takes longer, but there are no other draft only events at GenCon, that was part of why we chose the format (and "tradition", it's what we did last year as well).

8 figures limit:
First: This is a for fun only tournament! Yes, if your pod contains 4 players who picked up 2 boosters of Dragoneye your at a slight disadvantage. But we can make sure that that doesn't happen. 2nd, because we wanted to optimize turnout, we needed to choose a late starting time, rather than have it overlap another WotC sanctioned event. But likewise, we need it to end at a reasonable time.

I had already been struggling with this. My original vision was to do a full swiss tourney till there was a "champion". But the reality is that with 30+ people your talking abou 5+ rounds, and a finish time around 2-3:00 am.

So we looked to speed up play: 45 minute rounds. Wait, will we ever finish a game in 45 minutes? OK: use premade maps. Still... Mike suggests an 8 figure limit. It seems perfect to me.

I know some people were excited to find boosters of Dragoneye, we'll just need to make sure that they get placed in drafting pod's that also have DK and AN.

Lastly, no one is trying to be a dictator, if loads of people are concerned we can reconsider it... but it really does make sense to me.

Jesse: Keep recruiting! Glad to see such interest!!!

I'm fine with what's been decided thus far. Yes, sealed would save some time, but a booster draft will be far more interesting, Just my two cents.

Sealed adds an aspect of fun, especially as some people are bringing older sets to throw in the mix. The hope is that by the time the event is over, everyone has had some fun, meet some people that we talk with online, and played in a format that is different from what is being played.

I think that this event will be able to do that with ease. We are also adding in the fact that now 5 WotC guys might play. This is a great chance to meet some of the people who helped to bring this great game to us.

I'm sure once everything gets rolling it will be a blast and everyone involved will have a great time.

44 players have expessed interest. 35 are confirmed. This is huge compared to last year. Please check and let me know if you are missing from the list and want to play or on the list and need to be removed.

This is just a guide for me so that when I start setting up I'll know how much space is needed as so on.

Thanks,

Well it looks great to have so many people interested. I think we have a few people who want to come and judge and not play, so we'll have some judges. We will also have a ton of players and I think we can do pods with at least one player who has drafted before.

That is a hope. I know that Pat and I have been pushing the idea a lot more then last year where we kind of put it togehter at the last minute. I'm hoping people think it is a great event and have a lot of fun.

Between this and that "beer" thing Friday night, it will be great to finally meet everyone that is posting. This is a great opportunity for all of us that are going to meet and greet the members of the board.

I'm really looking forward to the chance to meet folks I chat with but don't actually know. I've also never played in a booster draft before--just limited and constructed, so I'm happy to be adding another style to my list of things played. I also haven't yet played on the Fane map (been too busy practicing for the Grinder)--so I'm looking forward to getting in a little practice on that map before the championship.

I think that 45 minute games with 8 figures is an excellent idea. I am entirely on the side of the players who need to get done before it's too late. I have to play in the Grinder all day Friday and so being up until 2 in the morning is probably not a wise choice for me. I'm thinking the third match won't start until between 11:30 and midnight, so I might drop out at that point, even if I'm on a hot streak, just because the next day's games actually count for something.

It depends on the boosters you are using. It won't work well if people bring Harbinger or Aberrations. Most of the sets it will work ok for. People will have to be paying attention to the 200 point mark when drafting though. They can't just take a bunch of Xephs and hope to stumble into 200 points.

The difference between 8 minis and 12 minis is only about 20 points.
Either way,(8 or 12) I recommend that people don't bring Harbinger and Aberrations for a 200 point game. Dragoneye also has problems if you are unlucky.

Well this will be one of the last posts for this thread from me until after the event. I'll be brining some papers to keep track of players and prizes.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and having some great fun.

I'll be there to start setting up around 9:00. I'll be heading over from the Marriot and helping to get everyone organized. If anyone can ask the guys at the Wizards table in the minis halls if they have any empty boxes that would be great. We could use about 3-4 for organizing the prizes.

Have a safe trip everyone heading out to Gencon!

[:(]GENCON IS OVER

As the first to post since the great time we all had, let me express my extreme thanks to Pat and Sean for all of their work taking a great idea from last year and turning it into an incredible event for near 50 people.

Also, a special thanks to Runelord for his awesome repaints, of which I was lucky enough to be a recipient. The Golden Werebear of Doom now resides atop my collection, keeping a close eye over the many evildoers who there reside.

All in all, an AWESOME time, and I hope a tradition for many years to come.

We have added a thread in the general discussion area to discuss the event. If anyone looking could post how everything went and what band you played that would be great.

Thanks dreamwither for the praise! As long as I am on the boards and going to Gencon we will make it happen. Matter of fact I am already thinking about next year and how to make it better.

Coming soon:
