Nice background story there Richard. Does this mean you want to play the RPG as well? Is Laryn a fighter?

I've always sorta wanted to play, but I'm just kinda unwilling to commit a third night every week to gaming. Between DDM and Dreamblade, I think that's enough for a week for me. Of course, with the more or less total lack of DBM being played it's possible I should reevaluate that position.

As to the second question, no, he is not a fighter.

Which leads to my own question. What can you tell me about Laryn from his background? I tried something knew, trying to piece together bits and bites from his past, instead of just creating a narrative of he did this and that and has this and that. Can you tell what class he is? What about his appearance? Abilities? Family? etc. I'm wondering if this actually worked the way I'd intended or if it only worked in my head because I knew how to fill in the blanks.

That's a pretty quality backstory Richard. In particular for someone who wasn't going to play.

Seriously if you would like in we can find room for you at the table. If we run out of room we'll just cut Jory.

Just kidding Jory, you're all right. We'll cut Scott.

Even those of you who have yet to join the campaign can get in on this.

With both bonuses recieved that should put you over 1000 XP and at 2nd level so you can feel free to advance your characters so you are ready to go on Wednesday.

Hmm only 2 highlights, well where does one start.

1) definitely saving my own hide and some others with putting the stirges, and the bard to sleep.

2) finding the treasure map on the husk of a corpse, maps are my friend, they always lead to fun things.

as for needing a ranger or a druid, i say meh. if we can follow a map to the dungeons then we are fine. out in the wilderness we will just have to be a little more alert than normal.

What do we know:

17 years old.
Uses sword spear staff and bow.
Good dex.
Militia feat?
Studying with a wizard.
Has a cat companion (familiar?)

My guess would be wizard now that I read over it again.  Although possibly a sorceror (haphazard magic skills).  Give him the Dalelands militia feat so he has a bit of verstility.  Shadow the cat can be his familiar.  And the best part - his parents haven't been killed by raiders/orcs/monsters/falling trees.  That is an odd feature.  It seems every hero is a orphan, both in D&D and Disney movies.

Everyone posted their highlights so you all get the first bonus 100 XP.

I'm still waiting on an email from one player and as I metioned those waiting to join can still email me too. For those of you I responded to you should have at least 1000 XP now so feel free to go ahead and level up your characters now.

For hit points, the DM is in a generous mood. You may either take the maximum again like at first level or 1, your choice.

Everyone good for pizza Wednesday?

Alright, so it did more or less work as planned. Laryn is in fact a sorcerer, and Shadow is intended to be his familiar. He was technically supposed to be 18 years old, but I seem to have messed up my counting, no big deal there. The militia training was meant more as something he had done logically given the danger of the area around Giant's Hollow. For what it's worth, Giant's Hollow was not meant to be in the Dales, it's in the mountains of the Vast, a bit north of Procampur. The part about living parents is accurate. I noticed awhile back that it seemed like every one of my characters was an orphan so I make an effort to avoid that nowadays.

Lucky Three Dragon Ante Deck Update

After thinking it over I've decided we will use the cards instead of dice to determie how the luck plays out. Here's how it will work.

Lannister will apply the initial +1 bonus to his d20 roll as he wills. Right after resolving that he will choose a player to draw a card from the TDA deck. If they pull a good dragon then Lannister can use his +1 one on another roll and the player pulling the card gets a +2 bonus on their next d20 roll.

If said player pulls an evil dragon card no more luck for Lannister that day and the drawing player recieves a -2 penalty to their next d20 roll.

Should the player pull a mortal card that's when things get interesting. He must then choose another player (except Lannister) to draw a card. The first player still gets a +2/-2 to next d20 roll should a dragon be drawn, but the stakes double for the new card drawer becoming +4/-4. And if another Mortal is drawn a new player is selected and the stakes double again.....

Still waiting for an email from Nico or else you'll have a measly 1st level Paladin in the party.... Then again, apparently he still hadn't chosen his 1st level feats....

The Legend of Fiddlin' Dingle Oakenheart - Part 1 (The Early Years)

From humble seeds do mighty oaks grow, or so went the one of Fiddlin' Dingle's first hit songs.

Life began rather simply for young Dingle on the family turnip farm back in the Great Dale. Generations of Oakenheart's tilled the soil, growing delicious turnips for the people of the surrounding lands. Yet the farmer's life was not for young Dingle, music was in his heart.

One fateful autumn morning young Dingle was charged with the responsibility of transporting a donkey cart full of prize turnips to market in Uthmere. As Dingle drove the donkey cart to Uthmere, whistling a merry tune along the way, he happened upon a road weary gnomish minstrel. Introducing himself as Wilfred the Red, in exchange for a merry tune upon his cherrywood fiddle young Dingle would take him into town. Or such was the plan....

Along the trail to Uthmere young Dingle asked to play Wilfred's fiddle, just the opening the supposedly weary gnome was looking for. While Dingle was distracted trying to master the old fiddle and its rich tones, Wilfred the Red clubbed him over the head from behind with a handy sack of turnips. Pushing the unconscious Dingle off the donkey cart with a grin, Wilfred took off with the load of prize turnips leaving the young gnome with nothing but the old fiddle and his first experience with the evils of banditry.

Needless to say when young Dingle returned home his father was less than pleased and tanned his hide something fierce. Despite it all Dingle considered it a fair trade, for now he had a fiddle. His career in music had begun....

Your minis is in stock at my other supplier, and I am shipping today (if I haven't shipped before she can get the add-on added on). With luck possibly in on Friday. Maybe Monday if the highway is icy.

Can't I use SOME two-handed weapons? I'm not trying to argue and I will except your decision, but if your rule is in effect, then there is no "gnome hooked hammer" because no gnomes would be able to use it. Sorry if I seem mad but I'm frustrated from school stuff.

The gnomish hooked hammer is technically a double weapon and therefore permissible. It is sized and designed to be used by gnomes. In a similar vein the orcish double axe while a double weapon is just to large for you to ever wield properly.

It's all a matter of scale. In Nico's paladin's hands the 3 foot long sword is easily enough wielded in one hand but in your hands it's just two large and cumbersome, it takes both hands to properly swing it.

Okay, from the PHB here's what you can use...

In one hand: Anything in the light category, clubs, shortspears, rapiers, and whips.

With both hands: Heavy maces, morningstars, quartersaves, spears, battleaxes, flails, long swords, heavy picks, scimitars, tridents, warhammers, gnomish hooked hammers, and dwarven waraxes.

Ranged weapons: Pretty much everything except Long Bows and Heavy Crossbows.

Anything else from another book I'll judge on a case by case basis.

Who is Dingle?

A good question. Who is Dingle?

Stay tuned for future instalments of the Legend of Fiddlin' Dingle Oakenheart to find out.

PS: The simple answer is Dingle is Veil's (Jory's) father, making him in reality Little Dingle.

The Legend of Fiddlin' Dingle Oakenheart - Part 2 (Practice, Practice, Practice)

Turnips and music don't mix. Who could forget that early Dingle classic?

After losing the turnip shipment to bandit trickery young Dingle's father Gordon kept a sharp eye on his son. Hard work and plenty of it was Gordon Oakenheart's prescription for Dingle's foolishness. Many long, dusty days of pulling turnips lay before Dingle yet each night he snuck away from the family farmstead to Gooseberry Hallow to practice on his fiddle.

Turnips by day. Fiddlin' by night. Something had to give....

Hey I've actually made a new weapon (With some help from people on the boards of course).

Steel Halo (one handed)
Cost: 40gp. Dmg (S): 1d6. Dmg (M): 1d8. Crit: 18-20/x2. Weight: 12 pounds.
Requires exotic weapon proficiency (steel halo)
When not weilding it counts as a buckler (+1 AC). It takes a full round action to unweild it (Can't think of the proper word atm) so enemies get an AoO.

Cool, huh? It's a steel halo attached by steel wires. You swing them around to deal damage.
Does it look useable or does it still need tweaking?

Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos.

The Legend of Fiddlin' Dingle Oakenheart - Part 3 (Love in the time of Turnips)

Don't go Fiddlin' with my Heart, truer words were never sung.

One fair summer's morn while young Dingle was tending the Okaenheart turnip fields the would be musician heard perhaps the most lovely sound he had ever heard. A young woman's voice, singing a beautiful melody, captivated him. Much like a sailor drawn below the waves by a siren young Dingle was drawn down to the riverside, the source of the singing.

A vision. There by the riverside was the most beautiful woman he hand ever seen, golden curls and the smile of an angle. She was sitting there on a rock, feet wading in the gentle flow of the river and singing a beautiful gnomish ballad. For the first time in ages Dingle forgot about music, he was in love.

Staring for a moment, lost in her beauty young Dingle shook off his shyness and introduced himself the only way he knew how. Pulling out his ever present cherrywood fiddle Dingle began to play in time with the beautiful young gnome's singing. Without missing a beat she smile at Dingle and continued to sing, accompanying each other perfectly.

One song led to another and before Dingle knew it evening was approaching, they had sung every song he knew, and yet he still didn't even know her name. An awkward moment later and he learned her name was Adele. And then they kissed as the stars danced in the sky above.... one week later Dingle and Adele were married.
