Merry Christmas everyone. I hope everyone had a great holiday.

I'm a little dissappointed that I didn't get Snig, but I suppose I can always use the Warg Rider version. I put Storm ahead of everybody since I didn't get her last time.

I should be there for minis tomorrow, but there is a chance I may be seeing a friend who's only in for a few days.

I don't think I'll be down for minis tomorrow night, just getting back into town I have too many things to tack care of around here.

I will be down Friday night for my D&D minis, feel free to drop in and learn how to play or even play some casual games on the side.

Happy Holidays and all that fun stuff.

My first few commander choices were the ones that would allow me the most options when building warbands.. Merc General was the obvious choice for that, allowing me to play any faction. I guess I just need to get a hold of one now. lol. The Greyhawk Militia Sergeant was my other choice, he's really cheap (13) and allows me to play either CG or LG. I'm going to have to rethink the cool theme warbands I had in mind when listing the other commanders I didnt get.

Vlaakkith wasnt on my list cuz I dont pwn the bitch.

That's more or less a January Schedule.

Everyone get your League Warbands ready.

And just a note on what will constitute a theme warband. A theme warband must be approxiamtely 75% dedicated to the theme in both point totals and activations. It'll be a judgement call on my part for anything not above that standard. All Aberrations or Undead is a theme but something like all Humanoids isn't. On the other hand all dwarves or all orcs is.

Star Wars Starships battles makes the scene again on January 5th. Spread the word. I said spread it!

If there's a decent turnout it'll remain on the schedule.

Those not interested may come down for some casual play SWM or something.

Hello,

Won't be down tonight for minis after all.  I seem to have caught a touch of the holiday flu.  Barely made it through work and I don't think Scott wants me leaving any "gifts" for him all over the maps, or floor at the store.

Hopefully will see people on Friday or Saturday.

Cheers

D&D Minis Demo Tonight!

6 PM at Game Knight, everything you need to play provided.

I've put together a bunch of extra 200 point warbands, feel free to drop by and borrow one of mine or play your own and get in on some casual play DDM while I teach new players how to play.

Perhaps there will even be a pick up tournament....

Lots of promo minis to give away as well as 3 Unhallowed boosters to those who buy product.

Maybe we'll order up some pizzas.

Should be good times. I hope to see you there.

MJ is here, and he says he will. I have a wedding in the afternoon, so I'll have to check my workload when I get in.

The January schedule is now posted to the GameKnight website, with some tweaking. If you find any mistakes, you know who to blame.

Well, looks like luck is on my side again....I have Saturday off now, so I'll be down for some Star Wars this weekend. I don't own any SSB minis, so I'm hoping that I can borrow some to play with. I'll bring down a couple of 200 pt SWM squads too, just in case....

See y'all then!

So, I seem to have shaken the bug that kept me down right after Christmas, so who will be out for minis on Thursday?

I know that I need to get a minis fix.

See some of you there I hope.

Hey everyone it's me, Jory and I'm back on after countless computer troubles including me forgetting my password :(
In the end I still can't use my normal computer for the internet so I have to use my laptop.

Scott: Whats happening with the new D&D group? is it happening or not?

And sorry all that I haven't been out there as much and I'm hard to get in touch with, but I'm back now.

"Champion of the Centaur Commander. Knight of the Gnoll Druid. Vindicated Champion of the Dragon Wrought Kobold!

01/02/2008 9:15 AM
Happy New year!

@ Richard - I have an Elf conjuror in the case, and with the new GameKnight Cash for prizes thingy we're going to start up, it could be yours! (or you could by it, not as much fun though).

@ Jory - Paula is doing something today apparently. She has plans to make up groups and have them play elsewhere (I think), but for today she should have something going. I was hoping she would be a new Wednesday DM, but it seems her plans change when ever I talk to her. Paula, pipe up here and correct me if I'm wrong........

Otherwise - January 3rd (tomorrow) is 100 points sanctioned with the new prize structure. I'm still in the working phase, but basically every $in entries is going into the prize pool. Those dollars will be awarded at the end as GameKnight "Cash for figs".

GameKnight New Prize Structure

In the sanctioned games, I will put out a retailer kit (a new unopened one), and you will get 1 pick only from it. The rest of the stuff goes into the regular prize box. In unsanctioned games, there will be a chance to have 1 pick from the existing prize box. For some sessions I will allow 2 picks to keep from getting backlogged on too much stuff. Or I may allow the GK$ to be used for extra bin picks.

Entry fees wil be converted to "GameKnight cash for figs" (GK$). This can be spent the night it is won, or saved and spent at a later date. Basically, as it is awarded you can use it right away to "win" a cheap/moderate rare if you are first, or some commons/uncommons if you are further down the line. In larger attendance games, it is possible that the 1st and 2nd/3rd place finishers will able to win a rare. In this regard it is like a prize draft, except instead of having 8 figures to choose from, you have hundreds. You get more of what you want and aren't getting stuck with any crappy singles you don't want. Right now I'm thinking the minimum prize will be $3 (again, it isn't finalized). GK$ saved can be used to purchase more expensive figures. So if you come in last and don't want any commons or uncommons, you can accumulate the GK$ to purchase a more expensive rare.

I will be dating the GK$ with an expiry date, but it is going to be something like 6 months or so. This is to prevent (or limit) someone from hoarding it and wiping out the new stock of rares when a new set is released and the new singles are put in the case. Or I may also say that for the first week it can't be used on the new stuff. We''ll see what problems arise and go from there.

So, that's the basics. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do you like or dislike the sound of this? Is there any obvious problems you see or any other way that people can abuse it? Feedback is appreciated.

I think once this new program gets going, it will allow me to open more figures for the display case and increase the selection of what is available. I can also do thinks like bolster certain prizes, like"

"This week all GK$ counts as double for Unhallowed commons"
"This week GK$ can be spent on 3.5 edition books"
"This week GK$ can be used on entry fees for the booster draft"
"Bonus prize of 5 GK$ for best theme band"
"Bonus prize of 3 GK$ to last place"
"Bonus prize of 5 GK$ to be randomly awarded"

Cheers,

TBB

Scott: Do you know if the pick up group meets at the store or not- I can make it to the store but i don't know about any other locations.

We'll have to wait and see. Having all the entry fees go towards prizes sounds good, but it depends on what my gameknight dollars buy. If you're just converting the entry fees into store credit and spreading them out through the attendees it could work out quite nicely. It also very much depends on how much the figures cost in store as singles.

For example:

4 attendees:

1st - 10
2nd - 5
3rd/4th - 2.50 each

total: 20

6 attendees:

1st: 12 dollars
2nd: 10 dollars
3rd/4th: 3 dollars each
5th/6th: 1 dollar each

8 attendees:

1st: 15 dollars
2nd: 12 dollars
3rd/4th: 4 dollars each
5-8th: 1.25 dollars each

Well tonight didn't happen. Only Richard and Chris L out. I more and Lisa could have filled out the ranks. Sigh....

The new prize structure isn't ready yet, but I was thinking something like this:

4 attendees ($20):

1st - $8
2nd - $6
3rd/4th - $3 each

total: 20

6 attendees ($30):

1st: $9
2nd: $7
3rd: $5
4th/5th/6th: $3 each

8 attendees ($40):

1st: $10
2nd: $8
3rd: $6
4th: $4
5th to 8th: $3 each

Or, I could take $1 off each of those prizes, and put it into a "special condition prize", like this:

4 attendees ($20):

1st - $7
2nd - $5
3rd/4th - $2 each
Special condition: $2 for best theme, and $2 random draw.

total: 20

6 attendees ($30):

1st: $8
2nd: $6
3rd: $4
4th/5th/6th: $2 each
Special condition: $3 for top nightly VP score, and $3 for best score in game 3.

8 attendees ($40):

1st: $9
2nd: $7
3rd: $5
4th: $3
5th to 8th: $2 each
Special condition: $4 for best sportsmanship, and $4 best warband name.

I could use one format for sanctioned games, and one for non-sanctioned games. Obviously best theme band would apply to theme games (non-sanctioned).

Waddayatink?

I don't want the last place prizing to dip below $2 or $3. Since single medium figs are $3 for uncommons and $1.50 for commons, a $3 prize means 1 medium uncommon of your choice, or 2 medium commons of your choice.

If bottom end prizes dipped down to $1, $1.25 or $1.50, it wouldn't really be any better than the current booster draft prizes.

Larger and smaller figures, plus chase figs (Small fire Elementals and Stirges come to mind) would vary in price. Prize drafts would usually get you the same prizing, just from whatever was drawn from the booster though. That's where carrying the prize amount over will help last place finishes save up to get the rares. Four $3 prizes gets you a $12 rare. Not too bad for showing up every week for a month.

While the lower prizes might not be better than the booster draft if they drop below a threshold, the top prizes are definitely not as good as the booster drafts. Winning an 8 person tournament barely earns you enough cash for a rare? And a subpar one at that. Granted you get to choose something, so you don't have to worry about pulling 3 warbound impalers in a row, but I think there needs to be a bigger incentive to do well. Also, if possible, where things are going to be random it would be nice for the prizes to be more or less equal.

Take the 8 person tournament as an example:

Assuming the person that loses the final game still ends up second (which isn't necessarily the case, although it might work that way) the final win was only worth two dollars. And going 3-0 didn't even earn the person a 2:1 investment on their money. They spent $5 to win $4. Also, the 2-4 finishers will all have records of 2-1, so we're back to random determination of the difference between 7 and 3 dollar prizes, it might be nice to at least have the 3/4 prizes be similar, although rewarding 2nd place is fine. Also, someone who finishes 2-1 in 4th place wins 3 dollars, 1 dollar more than the person that finishes 0-3 in last place?

I consider 1.50 commons and 3 dollar uncommons seriously overpriced. I could be wrong, maybe they're selling, but if they're not selling, it means they're overpriced. If you sold all the figures in a booster (10 dollar average rare, 3 uc @ $3, 4 c @ $1.50) you'd have made $25 from the $15 dollar booster. I suppose it makes sense that you make more than the random booster since you presumably spend time sorting minis into their respective places when new sets come out, but 67% more? I think a more reasonable basis for uc and c pricing is 1.50 for uc and .50 for commons. If you were to sell those along with a 10 dollar rare you'd have 16.50 from a 15 dollar booster.

You assume that all the single figures sell equally well. They don't. No offense, but you also considered a Large Black Dragon at $20 overpriced. Yes in theory I make $25 from a $15 booster, but it is also I who get stuck with the crappy Dromites, Giant toads, Spell-stitched Hobgoblin Zombies and Kruthik Hatchlings. So in turn I don't sell every figure from every box. The cost of those undesiirable figures is in turn born by the cost of the other desirable figures. If I lowered the price of the commons and uncommons to what you suggest, then the cherry-picking of the good ones will fall to the first individual to come in the day the set is opened, and no-one after that gets anything good.

So it is about balancing things out. I constantly get asked for Storm Archers, amongst other figures like dwarves, orcs, elves, goblins, skeletons and other popular PC types so people can use them for roleplaying. I don't think my prices are out of line on the singles. I do sell quite a lot of them actually, as evidence by having none of those Storm Archers or others mentioned. In some sets the rares don't sell as well as the commons/uncommons. I could go to a maxminis price per figure on commons and uncommons based on supply and demand, like I do for the rares. This is cumbersome and would net more cost being passed on to the end consumer as I'd have to pay someone to sort and price (and reprice and resort at every set release) and add their wages to the cost of those figures.

Also, I am not taking the cost of the retailer kit into the prize distribution. So for a sanctioned tourney with 4 people, I am the one sucking up the $10 plus freight plus brokerage plus taxes plus time to order cost of getting them here. If I am making money on this in any way, then that's good. That helps me pay the rent, the heating, the staff, the cost of said retailer kit, and all the other intangibles. It keeps the place operating so everyone can use it.

I wish I knew how to work these forums probably to do what I want. Anyway, my best effort:

"You (Richard II) assume that all single figures sell equally well."

No I didn't, I assumed that all figures would be sold. There's a big difference in what can be a small change of phrase. I know things don't all have the same value, that's why I've always been puzzled by your mostly blanket distribution of pricing for commons and uncommons (with a few exceptions, like stirges and fire elementals and troll slashers). There's a big difference between a duergar champion and an earth shugenja. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that you sold all your duergar champions at $3, but I'm willing to bet that you've got a few earth shugenjas kicking around.

"... I can get stuck with the undesirable figures..."

Of course you do. No one's gonna pay 1.50 for a giant frog or spellstitched hobgoblin zombies. But they might pay .25 or even .50, and that money is better than nothing isn't it? They might not pay $10 for a dromite, but they might pay $5. If you sell a black dragon for $20 and a dromite for $5, that's better than selling a black dragon for $20 and having a dromite sitting on the shelf priced at $10 but unsold. On a side note, you priced the large black at $20, it sold for $20, therefore it wasn't overpriced, regardless of whether I thought it was or not.

"... I don't sell every figure in every box."

I've noticed. :P But that again is part of my point. Once the box is opened, the value of those figures is no longer random, it is certain. Or more certain than it was before. You need to make back that $15 dollars you would've if the unopened booster had been sold, and to do that you need to sell the singles. My pricing guidelines for c and u/c were just that, guidelines. If you just use them flat out, then it's no better than your current system of flat prices, it still makes the same errors. If something is in lower demand, then its price needs to be decreased to find a sell point, just like something in higher demand needs its price raised.

"I could go to a maxminis price per figure on commons and uncommons based on supply and demand, like I do for the rares."

This is what I'm suggesting. I don't know how much time it would take to reprice stuff, but I can't believe it would take all that long. Another thing of note is the maxminis price guidelines, are somewhat misleading. That's what stores are asking for minis, it's not what they're are selling for. My general guideline is that I'll pay roughly half of the guide value in cash for a mini, but much more than that (unless it's something I really need/want) and I'll pass.

"Also, I am not taking the cost of the retailer kit into the prize distribution."

Yeah, well, it's not your fault, but the last several months worth of retailer kits have been pretty close to worthless imo. Redone epic cards with crappy common repaints hold little to no value for me. I'd much rather see extra boosters in the prize draft than retailer kits these days. Unless they come with epic guen c
