| | 10/21/2005 12:18 PM | Alert | Large squads of regular troopers makes for fun battles. Talk with your opponent prior to the fight so you know what both of you like to play. You can even arrange a scenario with him to avoid things like mass rebel troopers vs AT-ST (the troopers can't do anything unless there is a scenario based victory possibility).
As far as i know, dark armor is only relevent if someone plays Darth Vader Jedi Hunter...which imo shouldn't be in a game where one only has troopers. Again talking with your fellow players is the key to fun there.
Of course if you want to play competitively...well trouble might arise, but since i am not really involved into that type of gaming, i can't comment much. | | Completed Trades: -Eric the God; 7 miniatures, 5/5 -LCS; 1 miniature+tiles, 5/5

Yeah, I don't plan on playing competatively, so I think it will be alright. I also don't plan on introducing rares for the moment, but if I find I really enjoy the game I might start (but wait until I have rares for both sides, etc). Likewise, I don't think I'm going to add things like huge minis just yet (primarily since I don't have any), so I hope it'll work out.

With the ST Commander and the ST Heavies it's a bit easier to kick up the damage output. Missiles, grenades and hi-def Jedi cramp their style, but against like troops the Stormtroopers can edge out ahead.

| | 10/22/2005 12:42 AM | Alert | | I think it's easier to play with basic troops in SWM than DDM... the faction system holds itself better and it appears to me that the point cost is more balanced too. | | Completed Trades: -Eric the God; 7 miniatures, 5/5 -LCS; 1 miniature+tiles, 5/5 | |

| | 10/22/2005 1:49 PM | Alert | The Empire has quite a bit of nonrare strength: I like Elite Snowtroopers- They can take a 20 damage hit and still return fire for 20. Sith Witch autodamage is nice. A Heavy Trooper combined with Stormtrooper Commander can hit for 40 and the Imperial officer can let him do it again. The Dark Trooper is solid and his missiles helps clear swarms etc.
There is a thread on this very subject on the WotC boards with some sample squads: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=521901

| | 10/22/2005 3:43 PM | Alert | You totally can make a competitive force with no rares, it just depends on what force and what faction.
For instance an army with an X-1 Viper Droid, droid commanders, and filler droids, is actually a very solid, competitive army despite having no rares.
A Heavy Stormtrooper army using a Black Sun Vigo has a solid chance in 100 pts and can be quite deadly in 200 pts.
The Imperials can field a semi-decent non-rare squad using units Nightsisters, Dark Troopers, Marauders, and Dark Side Adepts. Not the strongest without some rare-backup, but pretty alright.
There are other combinations that can work too. While your variety in building competitive armies will be very hindered by building without Rares (ie. you'll have to play a lot of the same units in similar combinations), it definitely can be done if you want to save money.
