Umass Amherst Baby!

I picked up about five loose boosters today. I'll likely get a case now when payday hits next week. Anyways here are my impressions of the pulls.

Darth Sidious - I'm very happy with this figure, awsome sculpt and a pretty good paint job. A very nice alternative to his VR versions.

Sith Troopers - A little heavy on the black wash here, remincent of the War drums set realy.

Old Republic Soldier - Man this guy has some goofy looking armor... the alternating color plates make him look like he's in a Nerf tournement.

Massassi Sith Mutant - Almost as cool in person as the sneak peek we saw in the magazine preview. With a little green stuff he'd make a smashing Bearded Devil.

Satchel Charge - $#@& you R2D2! [:)]

Jacen Solo - "Don't you hurt my mommy!"

I felt the imperial was a little lacking, the Sandtrooper looks a little strange and the Dark Troopers are remincent of Gundam. I was hoping for another Scout Trooper figure. No Mandalorians was a bit of a shock but several of the specialized Clones make for nice proxies. Over all I'm pretty happy with this set.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Frankly I'm pretty impressed with the paint quality and sculpts. Too bad War Drums didnt come out like these.

The commons in this set have better paint jobs then the rares in War drums.

I am totally digging this set. It's amazing!!! I ordered 5 cases so far. I received one yesterday and received the Sith Cluster and I was satisfied with that. I am happy with all of the minis in the set compared to UH where your rare could've been Nien Nunb.

I LOVE THIS SET!!!!

Rebel Storm:60/60
Clone Strike:60/60
Revenge of the SIth: 60/60
Universe: 60/60
AT-AT 1/1
AoE 1/1
I have traded on here as Outkast Fett with 1 trade that was successful.

I bought a case. IMHO, the painting was of War Drums quality; poor. The Old Republic Jedi Guardian is the Frost Dwarf of the set: a white base coat, a dab of flesh on the face and hands, and a blue wash. They didn't bother to paint her hair. Sad to say, some of the commons are better painted than the rares and very rares.

Some of the sculpts are odd. Why are the Jedi Coucilor and the Sandtrooper so much taller than everyone else? Compare a sandtrooper to a Rebel Storm stormtrooper and sigh, knowing that they are totally out of scale. Why does WOTC seem hate female figures? Both Amidala and Jaina Solo have disfigured faces with nubs where a nose should be and tiny slits for mouths.

At least the R5 units are nice, but I won't be collecting more of this set.

Regards,

V

I like the Old Republic Jedi Guardian myself. This set does seem like it may have suffered the same production issues as WD, I'll have wait untill I pick up my case. Then I'll compare the common and uncommon paintjobs to the Rares and Very Rares.

Maybe I'm biased because it's Star Wars but my buddy mentioned the whole too much black thing aswell. Course I only showed him the Sith faction. My Rebel Troopers are all painted wonderfully no paint drips or smears. The Jedi Guadian is made after Atrius from KotOR 2. That's why she's albino. I will say my Guardian has a Ugnaught nose. I didn't get Jaina or Amidala the Enforcer looks alright. As for scale I think SWM maybe taking the DDM hero scale thing. Overall I'm very happy and as soon as more comes to my part of towm I'll get more.(Yes the whole city is sold out!) Oh I side note I emailed Rob on the whole cluster thing and he said they is a new guy running things in Hong Kong. It appears they aren't digging the new guys methods.:)

Well a case of boosters later and I've found some more interesting things about the set.

Even Piell - Despite being close to Yoda size he's on a medium not a small base.

Dagobah Yoday - "Grown larger in old age I have." He's noticably larger than either of his previous versions.

Octuptarra Droid - Mounted on an "oversized" large base.

I had some free time tonight and attempted to fix Jaina Solo's noseless face. Using a toothpick, I dabbed a bit of superglue on the ridge where her nose should have been, shaping a nose with the glue. After it dried, I drybrushed Citadel Dwarf Flesh paint over the glue and the rest of her face and hands. I'm happy to say that the figure is salvaged and doesn't look half bad.

Also, at lunch I was bored so I dropped by my FLGS to kill time. Although I said I wasn't buying any more COTF boosters, I splurged for one and pulled a Darth Maul; cool!

V

There's a rumor floating around about the Darth Nihlius boosters having a greater chance of a VR figure. So I picked up the last two boosters with that art at my FLGS, ended up getting Darth Maul as well and Darth Vader too. [:D]

I went to Hobbytown last night and all of the Nihilus boosters were gone, so apparently thats the acknowledged theory. I bought a Luke box and a Maul box. The Maul one had Bacara, and Luke had Yoda. As far as the comments of scale, they are the same size as the metal minis from 2000. So they must have moved from 28mm to 30mm. I do not find the size difference distracting as it is hardly noticeable.

Well if you hold up the Octuptarra Droid and compare it's base size with any other large from the set you will see a marked difference.

The size of the base does not change the scale of the figures. I think the larger bases are preferable as they allow for more dynamic posing. Even if the bases get larger they will still only fill 1, 4, or 9 squares. DnD is also going that way in the new set. I was just saying that the differnce in 28mm to 30mm scale is barely noticeable. I did not even notice until somebody pointed it out.

i got a Yoda in a Luke box as well. Sounds petty, but I only bought 3 boosters.

In terms of play my favourite mini is HK-47, but the e-web is pretty cool.

Overall, the set seems to be pretty good...

Granted, I would have liked to have seen more depth in both the Old and New Republic, but menh, I can wait for Bounty Hunters...

No comment on the Republic getting the "lion's share" of attention on this set...

I remember the stigma that surrounded this set, that it was going to be "all Jedi and Sith" according to some (questionable) sources, but it's turned out to be fairly balanced and some of my favorite pieces are non-Jedi/Sith.

Mas Amedda as we all know is just ridiculous, but hey, including figs like him encourages new players to pick up the game and gives veteran players (hah! the game isn't even 2 years old![:)]) a reason to look back at other options from the older sets.

Again, after waiting 10 months and watching a glut of DDM and A&AM roll out the door, I'm just glad to see any new figs. But also while I like the set, it really didn't rock my world the way Rebel Storm or Universe did.

Looking forward to Bounty Hunters!

Well COTF is a name that makes you thing about character with force rating, but the only protagonist are not the unique characters as in D&D COTF bring uncommon good Force users as the Jedi Weapon master.

Other Non-force users characters are really good but complementary to old factions from other sets.

If you begin with this game now you miss separatist and empire strong points, and great part of the rebel-New Republic Factions. Those who begin could use the newly reinforced republic, and the siths that comes really strong, maybe some old republic but is still light in supporting characters and there are not good combinations with fringe because they are little.

BTW... I would try more Nihilus Booster, yes VR comes in there! or good characters... lets keep trying luck [:D]

I'm really enjoying set! I'm not very familiar with SW outside of the movies and Clone Wars...but I'm having a blast playing the Sith faction! Exar Kun is so fun to field! All the Sith VR's have some fun abilities (transfer essence as well as a few others) and I'm looking forward to seeing how Uliq Qel-Droma fares when BH comes out. I pulled a Bastila Shan and have used the Old Republic a few times...the only drawback currently is only having one hero...but still fun to use nonetheless. Darth Vader also has a nice CE...it was fun giving the stormies an extra chance at the risk of losing their lives! Anyway...it's definately for me...a fun set to collect.

This was the set that finally got me to bite on SWM (I'd been thinking about it for awhile now, and the nice amount of easily-gotten lightsabers sucked me in.

Lots of lightsabers! Did I mention that I like this set because of such? ;-)

From the minis I've seen I think the paint is better than War Drums (the set that finally made me give up on DDM and save money by switching to printable tiles for DMing). Yes, the Jedi Guardian is a bit lacking in color, but given the inspiration for the mini, I can let that go. Other than a bit of heavy black wash, I'm satisfied with the paints I've seen (and the glow on Nihilus' cloak from his saber is a nice effect). Ironically, my biggest beef with the paints (and this will probably sound silly) is that none of the Old Republic jedi have a green lightsaber (any suggestions on the best way to re-paint would be appreciated).

As to other aspects, still have to get a better feel for the game before I can comment.
