Although I was a considerably hardcore SW fan many years back, my liking for SW has sorta died down over the years. Lately, I realised that some people I very vaguely know do play the game, but I never bothered asking them about it until I read an article on the game in a miniature magazine.

Anyway, I'm not going to start just yet, until I can get a few things straight:

1) The sets are so terribly confusing; every set has starters? Are they all inter-compatible?

2) How many factions are there? Across the timeframe of Episode 1 till the end theres quite a number of different factions

3) How costly is the game to build a competitive warband?

4) Are there any examples of competitive warbands, tourney-winning warbands perhaps, and how many rares are involved, and how much do they cost? I understand that this can vary, so perhaps just give a "best case" and "worst case" scenario.

5) Last but not least, if I were to start now, what should I buy?

Thanks!

EDIT:
Oh yes,
6) I noticed some sets have huge figures, and I'm guessing they pack these like the Giant of Legends and War of the Dragon Queen boosters in DDM. Are these for normal games or are they "Epic"?

I'm not a starwars expert but:

1) I beleive all starwars minis are valid (compatable) for play.

4) Maybe try swshoebox ...

6) The huges are playable in any point cost game.

1) The first three sets had starters. They released a 4th stand alone starter just a little while ago that features some minis from earlier sets at a good price.

2) Lots. There are currently 10 SWM fations. Old Republic, Sith, Republic, Seperatists, Rebel, Imperial, New Republic, Yuuzhan Vong, Mandalorian, and Fringe.

3) Hard to say, it shouldn't be too expensive to build a good warband with commons and uncommons. Of course it depends on the format.

4) I agree, try http://swshoebox.com/

5) Start with the new Starter set to get the rules and map and go from there.

All minis are currently valid, although a few of the older pieces are just not worth the points compaired to newer versions. eg. if you had any other Han Solo you won't play the Rebel Storm version.

The ten Factions cover all eras from Tales of the Jedi/KOTOR with sets planned based on the Star Wars Legacy comic. Fringe characters can be mixed with any Faction.

If you just wanted a squad then it won't cost you much. If you want to complete all the sets, or even a single set, it can turn out expensive. Ebay is the best guide for market prices.

SWShoebox has the stats, but so does the official WOTC website. Just go to the Star Wars Products page and you can view each set.

You should still be able to pick up the Revenge of the Sith starter, but the new one has the updated rules. You'll want more maps, so you'll need to either sek out the Missions books (pricey for what they are), get Attck on Endor or download some from the Holocron or Base Contact. Set wise it's personal choice, what era of Star Wars do you like? Any of the last three sets is a good place to start though.

also, check the new article on the Wizards home page about the GenCon tournaments. It should help you find competitive armies, and from there, a decent cost (with some Ebay sniping)
