So I have this friend, Jerald. A while back I loaned him my three George R R Martin books (Game of Thrones, Storm of Swords, etc.) I and others had been telling him for months (years?) that these were, in our opinions, some of the best mature dramatic fantasy novels that had ever been written. Ever. Period.

So, he eventually buckled and I loaned him my books. Maybe this was nine months ago.

Time passes and I don't see Jerald so much lately. His job has taken him out of town on a semi-permanent basis and our paths simply haven't been crossing alot lately. He did IM me a few months ago though to tell me that he and his wife love the books and, when they were back in town, we should get back together so he can get them back to me. We talked abit about the books, our favorite characters and arcs/plotlines.

But, as life does on occasion, things simply didn't work out when he was in town.

I was planning on re-reading the first three before I bought the fourth but simply hadn't got around to it. One of these days I planned to make it to the bookstore and pick up new copies of the first three and a copy of the 4th. With money and time being what it is these days I have been putting off the purchase.

Then, yesterday the doorbell rings. Delivery. Hardbound copies of all four books ... "Merry Christmas from Jerald & Hunter".

He's really a great guy.

If I had friends, I'd want them to be just like that.

I've had a similar experience. One christmas money was tight and a new rpg book came out that was out of my price range. Lo and behold....my players got together and it was under my tree that year. That really meant a lot to me.

He still pops by occassionally. I used to see him on the CO boards when I was a regular there.
