So, did you play Zork when it came out?

I did. Loved it. My 16-year-old stumbled across it the other day and is now officially hooked.

It's free these days: http://www.infocom-if.org/downloads/downloads.html

OMG! I remember playing those games and loving it.

Will it work under Windows XP?

The site is either dead or I am once again show how little I know about the web... I loved that game. BRING BACK THE OLD TEXT BASED GAMES!!! Now adays its nothing but eye candy.

I remember playing Return to Zork for half a year thinking the man in the crystal ball needed to be recharged because he was stuttering... come to find out my sound card was below par [:D].

I played Zork. I wasn't very good at it. But I tried. I never beat it. I recall needing to say Ulysses at one point and various other sundry details. I think I acquired Zork 2 & 3 also, but progressed even less in those games. I am such a visual person that having the game be completely text based was really difficult. I don't mean I need super graphics to enjoy a game. I loved Pool of Radiance (the old game). I just have difficulty tracking what is happening without graphics of any kind.

There was also a similar game that was based on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Since I was lost when I tried reading that book when I was about 12, I never really got past the part when I stuck a wiggly translating thing in my ear.

It's not dead. When you get the error screen click on "here" to get to the main menu and then go to "downloads". I have xp and was able to play Zork I. I forgot how you had to keep track of things. [:D]

My son said roughly the same thing after he played it for the first time. "Man, I'm gonna need a map!"

Pool of Radiance was a great game, but my fav. of that time was Secrets of the Silver Blade. That is the first computer game I ever beat, and loved it! I still fear Umber Hulks crashing threw walls [:)].

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was an odd game. I could never get out of the house alive... if you left without you're towel you died, and I could never find my towel [:(].

And thanks for the fixed link.

Ah text games...

You are lying on a cold stone floor, it's very dark.
> use torch

You can't use the torch, you have a massive head ache. Have you been drinking?

> use asprin

You can't use the aspirin, you're tied to the floor.
-- more --

The ceiling collapses and you are crushed by falling rocks.
-- more --

You die.
Try again? (y/n)

I get nostalgic about some things, text games I'm glad to pass on ;)

My favorite text game was called Planetfall. Spent hours on that game.

I had some very dirty text games for my mac classic years ago.... Bikini clad War Ladies of Mars or something....

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.
