| I'm quite keen on getting some 3D dungeon stuff for my campaigns and would like to get some advice first as it tends to be a large investment. I've seen the Dwarven Forge products which are fantastic but quite expensive. I'm also aware of the 3D dungeons produced by Wiz Kids for Mage Knight which is cheaper but looks to be a bit oversized for D&D minis. Are there any other systems out there that folks could recommend?

| Hirst Arts sells molds for dungeons. So instead of buying a specific part of a dungeon ala Dwarven Forge you can make the walls, floors, etc. with plaster of paris and then glue the pieces together. It's much cheaper than Dwarven Forge if you are making a lot of dungeons, but more expensive if you only want a few. (That is, you should find some people on Maxminis who can share molds with you.)
The best part is that you can use this with a modular design to make pieces that can be re-arranged in any order you like. I'm not saying it very well, but you can plan your rooms so that they fit like jigsaw puzzle pieces and you can re-arrange them easily.
EDIT: Found a link. http://www.hirstarts.com/molds/molds.html | | It's deja vu all over again.

Wow, that stuff looks pretty cool and highly detailed. I'd love to get into that but my days of spending hours on end painting miniatures and the like are over as I try to juggle work, family, and play. Hence I can only really go for the pre-painted pre-assembled option. I'm guessing that none really compete with Dwarven Forge in this category.

| | Well the Mage Knight is pretty dirt cheap compared to Dwarven Forge. The Square sections that MK uses are almost twice the size of regular D&D or Dwarven Forge sections. Myself I'm picking up a few odds and ends on E-bay, as well as pre-made Hirst kits that I can assemble and paint. | | Pathetic Earthlings. | | I have both Dwarven Forge & MK Dungeons. I haven't actually used them yet. [B)] But as for size comparisons, the MK square are quite a bit bigger than Dwarven Forge, almost twice as large. This means you could use the MK dungeons, and simply mentally split every square into four smaller ones. Four medium bases do fit, and one large base also fits onto each square, so it's not that far off. Personally, I like the look and the feel of DF much better, but it's also quite a bit less flexible unless you've invested heavily. In other words, you can get a reasonably modular dungeon for $50 by buying MK, but will have to spend almost $500 to get the same flexibility with DF (if you can even find it!). | |

Is Dwarven Forge becoming hard to find then? I definitely wouldn't want to start trying to collect something which is out of production and therefore is even more expensive.

Wow, 3D? Paper terrains might work better for that, at least they are light enough. Do you know worldworks games?

Heh, this looks like a pretty neat system. I'm going to try printing one of these later and see how it looks.

According to the Dwarven Forge website, I think it is out of print. You can no longer order the basic packages from their website directly although newer stuff is available to order.

Their website does seem to claim that the basic sets will be back in stock at some point, maybe June 1st. A quick look at the forums seems to suggest that there are alot of angry and impatient customers out there. The DF folks are just simply having trouble keeping up with demand. Maybe that's just the trade-off between quantity and quality.

| I deal with DF a lot. Basic stuff seems to come and go then get restocked.
The basic cavern set is really all you need to make caves.
$100 or $200 is all you really need to have a great 3d DF set up.
Problem is you always want more. GRIN They are always getting more in stock and putting out new sets. (Again, Which you don't NEED but will want." Lava Pools, Traps, Narrow Passages, all kinds of things.
Spend some time on the web-site. Pre-painted right out of the box.
I don't have time to assemble or paint stuff. I'd rather game. GRIN
