| I happened to catch the new VH1 show I Love Toys and it had D&D on the list at #89 of 100. We got beat out by Care Bears, but stomped Pong. They showed clips of the release of 3e, and everyone put on wizard hats and made fun of gamers. Which brings me to my next point- I hate the way people talk about the game if they don't play. They always make it sound rediculous. They describe it as nonsense that confuses you with dice with odd numbers of sides and how gamers never get dates. Ah, martyrdom.

| It's just like the way most people describe cricket [:D]
I find it sad to see D&D appear on in the pop culture realm. Incorporation into pop culture tends to be the death of things. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. | I happend to catch a bit of this show. Too bad I turned it off to study at the commercial break of, "Up next the 89th spot in the countdown". It figures.
D&D is now becoming more accepted and yet is "old fashioned" compared to the computer games i.e. warcraft, halo, evercrack, uo etc... But when people ask me I just tell them I have to "think" of what to do and what the ramifications are for down the road. I also have social interaction where the folks at the table sit and talk about issues of the real world. It is a game but it is so much more. | | Ambassador of FUN!!!

I heard D&D was #98 in the countdown but have yet to see it. I was pretty sure it was going to be made fun of :( | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight

| Might sound sad but alot of people will ask me about the game and I always shy away from answering. Does anyone else do that? I just find that its too much work too explain it or just tired of people being closed minded too understand it. | | Champion of the Peryton Vindicated Champion : Pit Fiend, Devourer ATG: Fog Giant DW: Duergar Priest RPG Only!!!! | I seldom discuss the game with non-gamers. Of course I don't socialize with non-gamers much.

| Lemme get this straight: a bunch of hipper-than-thou "comics" (term used loosely) have decided not to be nice to D&D?
Call me kooky, but I'm not shocked. The best representitive we had on the show was Wil Wheaton for crying out loud!
Besides, most of those shows seem pretty snarky to begin with, and it shouldn't surprise ANYONE that a network aiming for 30something viewership would talk down about a game that many folks in their 30s spent a lot of time talking bad about.
I can just hear some of the lackwits that I used to go to high school with chuckling out loud and saying, "that dee-en-dee is fer NE-ERDS!" | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

I do the same thing. It's tiring to explain to non-gamers who you don't think might be interested in playing. Circumstance, however, forced me to reveal my hobby back in February...and explain it. I'm in the military and I had to put in leave to go to WF. This lead to my supervisor and a co-worker saying "hey, you're going to Virginia, why?". Rather than lie, I said I was going to a D&D convention. This immediately led to my being asked if I worshiped Satan, dressed up in Funny Costumes, and spoke like the people from Lord of the Rings. I was also asked if I was "wierd". 35 minutes later I had given a basic understanding of the game and I only get ribbed once a week or so. | | Better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you're not My Have/Want list Trades pending with: Competed trades (11) ares71,pagansexy,bradu,Unearthed Arcana, Garate,Arbados dobblegog, blackthorne,aussie_jim, spikegif, Lady Bast

Heh. Same thing happened to me.
I had to request time off to go to London. Obviously, the question came up as the "why"...
As a shrink, I just couldn't lie through my teeth to a group of 10 other shrinks (we have to request time off at our weekly clinic meetings). So I came out of the gamer closet for the first time.
First I tried avoiding the question. I told them I was just going "to go..." But that didn't last. Then I told them I was going to "play a game." Still more questions followed. I tried associating it with boardgames and with chess, anything to avoid the D&D label. Unfortunatley, as shrinks are wont to do, the interrogation continued. I think they were enjoying it at that point, because I was squirming.
So finally I came out with it. Told them everything. EVERYTHING. Interestingly, they listened with rapt attention, it was slightly fascinating. And then, at the end of my little diatribe/explaination, the clinical/practice manager came out with me! He revealed that he played D&D all the way through highschool, college, and gradschool, and told all kinds of crazy stories about his former groups and characters.
All our other clinicians were giggling, but they were also fascinated. And after he came out, I felt pretty validated. I always knew there was nothing wrong with it, but still, it was kind of nice to hear it from your boss. Since then, I've gotten tons of questions about my involvement, and they're all pretty positive. Silliest secret I ever kept, but I see why I kept it. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Now with micro scrubbing bubbles. Do not operate heavy machinery. Take with food. He can't be all bad for having put up with all the "Die, Wesley, Die" crap for all these years. But he's a nerd, played a nerd on a nerdy TV show, and is talking about a nerd game. (I use "geek" and "nerd" pretty interchangibly--so I don't mean anything nasty by it.)
It's just a little much. It would have been much "nicer" to see some rather normal, well-adjusted folks on there. But that wouldn't have been "funny".
And VH1 is scared of Vin Diesel, 'cause he's almost as tough as Chuck Norris.[)] | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

There are a bunch of closet gamers out there and a bunch of 'famous' RPGers out there as well, for one Metallica used to play Cthulhu and another one I can't recall, and other admitted RPGers are: Vin Diesel, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Stephen Colbert, Wil Wheaton, Jason Statham, Sean Astin, Johnny Knoxville, Fairuza Balk, Dave Chappelle, Ewan MacGregor, Eric Raymond & Brian Warner (according to wiki).

| Personally with the advent of all the computer fantasy games it has allowed D&D to come out of hiding a little and people can relate easier to it. That VH1 was making fun of it means little. I mena who realy watches VH1 anyway
