I sometimes seem to forget how good I have it, for lack of a better phrase. I'm 37 and have 3 of 4 grandparents left, losing my paternal grandmother to leukemia a couple years ago. We're planning my grandfather's 90th next month. I have a 5 generation picture with my son and great-grandmother, and he has known 5 and still has 4 great-grandparents. I'm also 3 months and 9 days from being the youngest grandchild on my father's side.

Many of the people I know tell me this is really odd as many people in their 30s - or younger - have known few, if any, grandparents. I was just wondering if my social circle is of shorter-lived stock, or is this really an odd situation?

That's very fortunate Gunthar. I only have my maternal grandmother left. However, several of her siblings are also still alive so it's like I have (kinda) many grandparents. [:D]

My paternal grandfather died before I was born. The other three have all died within the past 10 years or so. I knew those three pretty well. You are pretty lucky.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

You are very lucky. My maternal grandparents died when my mum was just a child, and my paternal grandfather died many, many years before I was born and my peternal grandmother - who looked exactly like a witch from a fairy tale (very scary for a wee sprog) - died when I was around 10.

I missed out on a lot of spoiling! [:(]

Glad for you, it is very cool to form memories like that right now [:D]

My Mom's Mother died when my Mom was 3 years old and her Dad when I was 9 months old.

My Dad's Mom must be dead by now but who knows, my Dad is 71, we lost touch with her about 25 years ago and I only met her like 4 times before that, she gave my Dad to her Father to raise; My Dad's bastard of a father never met my siblings 43 years ago and doesn't even know I am alive, he left my Dad and my Grandmother when my Father was born barely keeping any contact with him.

I am blessed that both my Parents and my wife's are alive and they both ADORE my son and their other grandkids but more my son since he is the last one [:D]

You are indeed a lucky soul, Gunthar.

When I was young, I had both sets of Grandparents and THREE Great-Grandmothers. By the time I was 10, I had 1 Great-Grandmother, my paternal Grandparents and my maternal Grandmother left.

Unfortunately, only my paternal Grandmother is currently alive.

Not so fortunate on my side of the family as my last grandparent passed on about 3 years ago. My daughter is the only one of my kids to remember/know him. The other 3 all passed on either before I was born or when I was in my late teens.

My wife's side is more fortunate in that we've gotten a 4 generation picture and her grandmother is still lively and young enough she might still be around later on when/if my daughter or sons have children. A 5 generation shot would be priceless.

From the other posts here I'd say that its a fortunate event. More to do with the shift of people having kids later in their lives rather then say back a generation or two when getting married in your 20s and having kids was norm.

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

Both grandfathers died before I was born, and I only have one grandmother left. She's 91, but very healthy.

Though I really don't know anything about the other side of the "family," both my grandparents on my mother's side passed away long before I was born, so I've got 0 grandparent experience.
