I've just picked up a copy of FFG's "War of the Ring" boardgame, after seeing some good reviews of it and it also being in my FLGS.

Has anyone played it?

Any reports?

###

We had our latest Board Game Afternoon on Friday...

The events:
* 3-round DDM tournament
* Star Wars Epic Duels
* Settlers of Catan
* Settlers of Catan: Cities & Knights
* Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Star Wars Risk
* DOOM: the Board Game
* Talisman (3rd edition)
* Ticket to Ride: Europe

I reached the final of the 8-player DDM tournament, only to lose when a Slayer of Domiel took out my Balor. (I really don't know the figures well enough). I should have won that game...

(My Warband: Balor, Orc Champion, Ogre Ravager, Tiefling Captain, Troglodyte)

Cheers!

Having double victory points scored on your Balor is just wrong!

I tried egging one with Commoners, she ignored them all to take out my Stone Giant. So, yeah, I feel your pain.

I find that the WotR BG is too heavily biased in favour of the Sauron and Isengard alliance. They seem to be the default winner every game, especially if the Free Peoples alliance is played by weaker players.

For the Free Peoples, the only way to win seems to focus exclusively on either:-

a. winning two poorly defended strongholds (i.e. the ones in the North); or

b. making the dash to Mordor with the ring.

I find that if you lose focus and waste actions by recruiting or moving troops in territories near Rohan or Gondor, then you'll find it difficult to complete either of your objectives before the enemy gains enough strongholds to win.

And some cards really throw the game against the Free Peoples, such as the Corsairs of Umbar... that is a serious blindside attack that you can't see until it is too late, and a good Sauron-Isengard player can keep it to take his last stronghold by surprise.

Thanks for the comments, llyrsln! I can see where you're coming from. We've had some good games so far, although Sarah hit the worst rolls imaginable in our last game, although she did almost come back with a military victory over Sauron.

I'm looking forward to seeing the expansion, though.

Cheers!
