No, I don't mean miniatures with a good ranged attack. I'm talking about miniatures that make goo dprojectile weapons.

We shouldn't count Huge-sized minis in this, since then the Behir would be the BEST EVER.

Of the tiny-to-large minis, I've been thinking about it, and there are plenty of good options - the Dire Bear, the Hunched Giant, etc. But honestly, after lots of thought, I think that the Roper is the best ranged attack in the series. It's big, heavy, aerodynamic, and makes a good caltrop when laid on the ground.

What do you guys think?

Sure, you say that now, but when it's just you, the rampaging rhino, and a handful of D&D minis, you'll wish you learned from me!

Anything big and round. Since beholders are so expensive, use Loyal Earth elementals. Those things are probably the heaviest larges out there.

Beholder eye stalks are "padding," and make the toss a gamble. Loyal earth Elementals have that wild arm which can lessen the impact.

I'd have to go with the dire bear. it's an uncommen so they are not too hard to replace if you are unable to retrive it after use. It's hefty weight (16oz or 17oz can't remamber excatly) with the proper velocity, it could do a lot of damage.

Hunched Giant. Bigger than the bear, roughly round, and rare. Everyone knows rares are better (even at being thrown).

The Roper would be a better fired projectile, but thrown... would be awkward.

I'd go with the Elemental Wall. While technically lighter than other large base minis, it has sharper edges, thus enhancing the chance of adding a laceration to the rsultant contusion.

As well it is far more available due to its uncommon status, and inclusion in the set to reduce cherry picking. Being in the most current set allows for stockpiling. All this allows for rapid fire delivery should you suffer from the typical gamers lack of coordination and/or throw "like a girl".

What about Hill giant Barbarians? The club gets in the way, but if you girp the mini by the clunb, you could get more throwing leverage.

And if you aim it just right the club spikes can take out an eye [:D]

The Chainmail Hill Giant is by far the deadliest non-huge mini available as a projectile (you may need a trebuchet or a catapult to launch it, though). [}:)]

If aimed right, a Skullcrusher Ogre's hair can put out an eye.

for the smaller ones: an handfull of abyssal maws might hurt too.
Monitor Lizards are pretty compact and heavy.

Marut might be good too. with the right spin it hits with its helm-horn or whatever that is.

This thread gets my vote for the best thread EVER on Maxminis. [:D]

Fiendish Girallon could put a hurtin' on someone. All those arms and such. Hextor as well.

The HGB might give someone a concussion if thrown hard enough.

Hook Horror could, if you're real lucky, put an eye out.

Beholder, Dire Bear and Thaskor *Klunk!*

Well, if you don't mind hucking rares, I think these would do okay:

Couatl: Relatively good design for throwing. Lots of non-pronounced 'ends.' Lack of bulk means you'd need good aim, but you could probably get it there. Consider him a precision-strike mini.

Celestial Pegasus: Presumably your target is evil; your moronic boss, annoying sibling, etc. Against such Evil foes, Pegasi have no objection to being sent on attack-runs. They're a little top-heavy so you'd probably have to throw them hard, but the head should smack into them rather well. Plus it LOOKS RIGHT; a Pegasus flying by! This will probably go in the Extended Toolkit for throwing minis.

Mounted Paladin: As above, but there's a chance you'll wedge his sword into someone's eye. Excellent!

Sword of Heironeous (Chainmail Equiv) or Elf Pyromancer (Chainmail equiv): Metal. With pointy ends. Gamble, but it could pay off.

Amongst uncommons and commons...

Dire Bear: Folks mentioning this one are right. This has everything you'd want for throwing. Sharp ends on the top, round shape, good mass; even if you mis-throw you should still land with something useful. Plus they can double as caltrops. I think we've got a Core Toolkit candidate here.

Wood Elf Ranger: Not for its inherent suitability to the task -- it's not. But rather, its sheer quantity ensures everyone has several to spare for tossing around. Numbers over quality in this case.

Half-Ogre Barbarian: There's a chance the sword'll soften impacts if it's the end you hit with, but otherwise it's got good size, relatively round for ease of tossing.

And a lot of the other choices people've mentioned are good too.

The Sword of Heironeous' sword arm is too weak at the joint to survive throwing (even with a decent pin).

For truly spectacular results try the Spiked Felldrake. It's hefty, it's relatively aerodynamic, and it has more (metal) sharp, pointy bits per square inch than any other mini in the Chainmail/DDM line [}:)]

I would like to add Werebear to the list, he's heavy, has thicker arms one with the axe, plus is an uncommon so you're bound to have a handful.

Bulletes work better than behirs! Treants hurt like a bitch when you get hit with them right as well, had my arm cut with a flying one once. Thaskor works pretty good too. I'd have to say Deathknell has the best ranged attack out of a set, as it has the Skullcrusher, the Thaskor, Dire Bear, Beholder, and, as someone mentioned above, Giant Frogs fly great out of slingshots!

Roper looks like it would make a great dart, but nothing seems to beat the inspired lieutenant and the hobgoblin archer as caltrops. Especially at 3 in the morning in a dark living room and not noticing you've knocked a bunch of your latest minis off the coffee table.

and if your collecting data, the formian giant can take a lot of fireworks before melting or even scorching, but straping one to a giant bottle rocket can potentually burn your neighbors house down when the weight throws off the balance and sends it screaming onto his roof.

Don't try this at home, I am not a professional and should not be allowed to play with fireworks, minis and my friends all at the same time..... actually any combination of my friends and fireworks should not be allowed minis just makes it worse. [:p]

So far, the Hill Giant Barbarian has the best accuracy if you clutch it by the club first - good damage for short range, too. for a lot of the others, you need to give them more time to pick up speed.
