| I live in Michigan, right next to the Indiana border. For decades, most of Indiana has not changed its clocks throughout the year, sometimes being on Michigan time, sometimes being on Illinois time. This year, the state decided to move to DST, and most of the counties moved over to Eastern, some to Central.
In addition, the governor has approved the leasing of the Indiana Toll Road to an Australian firm, and this has caused a lot of buzz in the state.
So, yesterday, a radio station, TV station and newspaper all started running articles on how the state was also switching over to the metric system. They even got the state's previous governor to call in to the radio show, talking up the merits of this.
Some people were calling in, saying things like "Finally, it's about time we joined the rest of the world," etc., etc. Some people called in and were up in arms, freaking out.
Almost nobody caught on that it was an early April Fool's joke. Today, the local TV and radio shows have been repeating at the top of their broadcasts that it was a joke.
That was a good one. I'm always proud of people who can pull off a prank like that. It's mostly harmless, possibly believable, and great fun for those in the know.

| | While I really wouldn't mind converting to the more efficient metric system, I think it's really silly for people to start April Fools Day stuff earlier that April 1st and then say April Fools. | | "Look to God and live." How is the system more efficient? Mind you, I like it myself, but I've never thought of it as efficient before.

I am assuming that multiples of 10 are infinitely easier for non-math people to work with? I never thought of it as efficient either, but that is what i came up with.

Thats right...multiples of 10 are much easier. "ten of these equals one of these which equals 10 of these ect." is a heck of alot easier than "12 of these equals one of these wich equals 3 of these ect." | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight

And 5280 of these equal one of those, and the '1 of those'(mile) doesn't even equal the 'Metric equivalent' (Kilo) | | Champion of the Alhoon and my called shot for Unhallowed Blood War Called Shot: Phoenix Trade withe me!

| | That is a great prank! The best April Fool's Day prank I pulled was two years ago. I got ahold of one of my roommate's cell phones and changed all of the names in his address book. [}:)] | | Champion of Gnomes | |

I heard a little blurb on NPR a couple years ago about some efficiency expert who studied US currency and the statistically most common amounts given as change at stores. His conclusion, if I recall, was that we could have maximum efficiency with pennies, nickels and an 18-cent piece.
Screw base-10.
