I'm a full time worker and full time college student. yet I have to pay back the state and the government back because I claimed 1 on my taxes? | |

| No one likes to pay taxes, but they are the means to support the common services that we all take advantage of like police, fire and city services. At any given point in ones life many of the services may seem extra or unneeded, but generally they are important at some point in everyone's life cycle.
Having to drop a bundle backt to the government(s) this time of year can hurt, but, what that really means is that you had use of that money all year instead of the government. I always find it amusing how excited people get over large Tax Refunds, when all that really means is that they loaned the government their money at 0% interest until they file their 1040 and get it back. It is a really poor investment vehicle. | |

| Your tax situation could be worse.
When my uncle died several years ago, his estate was split among the nieces and nephews (he had no heirs of his own). So, AFTER I filed my regular taxes, I had to file an amended form. Naturally, I owed.
So I paid.
I got a letter two months later telling me that I needed to pay and that penalties were already accruing.
I spent 45 minutes ON HOLD (one night) to get to an honest to goodness PERSON to help figure out that the IRS had ****** up and applied my payment to someone elses' account. I don't remember how long it took the second night I called to give them the bum information that they put on my check in the first place.
I don't mind paying my share, but I get irritated when it's assumed that I'm going to pay someone else's share, too. | |

I think it's a state of shock that the IRS is actually giving money they have back. Seriously most people have a bad image of the IRS and this carries beyond the US borders.

Not only do I pay taxes in New York, but since I work in Connecticut I also have to pay taxes there. So double the fun for me and my wife, since we both work in CT. | |
