| All,
New problem of the day. [:)]
I opened a Word file (from a trusted source, it honestly probably didn't have a virus). After using it, I did some cutting and pasting and wanted to save some of the smaller portions as separate files.
The program locked up. I did the old "Send Error Report" and discovered that my version of Office was a little out of date.
I installed (most) of the updates. (I ran into some buggy stuff and only installed so many of the updates.)
Since then, I cannot use Open or Save in any of my Office applications. Whenever I try either, the program locks up.
I got out my CD and ran the Detect and Repair. It did it's job and said everything was cool. But this problem still hasn't gone away.
I'm off to reboot (again) right now, but any tips (other than, "Gee Dave, sounds like you need to uninstall Office") would be appreciated.
Any hints?

| I'm not a programmer, but I play one on the net...
I can't help much but I've bailed myself out of problems several times by using the "System Restore" that comes with XP.
Give that a whirl, and reset your machine to a few days ago. It typcially doesn't touch documents in your My Documents folder, but will set your programs back to the configuration that you had at the selected restore point.
Good luck!

| You know, I had some troubles with office a few months back. The applications would never properly close (they'd just lock up and crash when you went to exit). I kept messing with the settings and the support files, looking for one that was corrupted or out of date, or anything.
Finally I called tech support. They show up and... uninstalled and reinstalled ;p
I know you mentioned:

But when I asked them about it, they indicated that it was so much faster to just uninstall/reinstall than to track down the specific bug and try to fix it that the just used the easy way.
Sorry to give you the answer you didn't want to hear, but it seems as though the "professionals" use it too.

| Leo is getting larger.
(A gold star to whomever gets the reference.)
Oh, any my problems are getting worse.
Internet Explorer now does this funky thing where if I click on the Address Bar, or click the little inverted triangle to the right of it, Internet Explorer locks up.
I went to the Office website and ran the old "check here for auto-updates" thing. Like last time, it tells me I'm running Windows 2000 (I'm running XP Home, SP2) and it tells me I need to update my Office 2000 product (I'm running Office XP SP3).
So, dunno what I'm gonna do about that.
Firefox still works though (go Mozilla!), as does Outlook Express (somehow). And, I have no problem using Notepad.
This is really bugging me for so many reasons, but one of them is the deadline for my KA6 submissions is this weekend. (Murphy's Law, I suppose.)

I have to agree with that. Most of the time I can't be bothered to work out why something happened. Just fix it and move on. Until it does it the second time.... then you blame the user
The system restore idea is a good one. That roll's back recent updates. Rebooting is a better idea first. Amazing what a reboot will fix.
You might want to check the security tab in options in case something funky has been added or enabled (like dont let Vrecknidj save).
You have checked to see if you have a virus though? By an online one is you have been naughty and havent got one installed. (eg http://housecall.trendmicro.com) While you are at it, do a scandisk too & fix bad sectors.
Sounds a little silly, but have you tried making a new blank document and saving --> opening that. If that worked, it would mean something in yiour old docs isnt compatable with the new updates. Sometimes a commonly used font thats got corrupt will cause similar strife.

| Well, I did some cleaning. The rebooting wasn't fixing anything, so I did a System Restore. Then I opened and closed, and opened and saved some documents, everything looked good.
This morning, I opened a document that I purposefully left unopened yesterday (not the same one that started all the problems yesterday, but one which contained some pasted text from that piece).
And, what do you know, I couldn't save--Word crashed, and then it wouldn't work properly again after that.
So, there's some code or something in that particular file (and the files like it) that, when opened, screw things up. I need the info in that file, so I'm off to try to extract it through Notepad.
Also, I have OpenOffice on another machine, and I'm going to see if it works there.
